stroked 383 07-07-2007, 10:00 PM Well my light gray interior had seen better days. It was all stained and faded. I always wanted the graphite interior so I figured I'd do it myself. Here is what I ended up w/...

I still need to get some new seat belts that are dark, I need to get some new visors, and I am going to replace my current door panels w/ some trans-am panels. I also just realized looking at these pics that I forgot the t-top trim as well... If anyone has what I need, let me know!

This is my first ever w/ headliner repair. I had to do it 2x because the first time I didn't get the fabric properly stretched around for the t-top opening. I think this turned out pretty good for the first time doing it and it only cost me $14 for supplies and most of that was the adhesive!

All you need to do this is stain, dye, and paint. Once I get the new door panels and seat belts, It will prob have cost me just over $200....at least 150 being for the new door panels :D
stroked 383 07-07-2007, 10:03 PM Oh, I also fixed my drivers side seat w/ some black leather tape...can't even tell its ripped anymore. I can live w/ this till I feel like shelling out mad cash for a new cover or new seats.
Klypto 07-07-2007, 10:05 PM looks nice, i wanted to do that
mdacton 07-07-2007, 10:14 PM Looks alot better

Some cheap black clothes dye from wal-mart....4 bottles at 2 bucks a bottle. I soaked the carpet, then put the dye in a spray bottle and went to town. I did 4 coats total.
Garcia95 07-07-2007, 11:22 PM good work

Only thing that I can see with the dye is that if you sweat on that seat.. or get wet and sit down it is going to bleed.. alot like if you dye a set of blue jeans or a shirt with that stuff. the 1st 2 washes will take some of it back out. Looks good though.

I actually dyed the seats w/ a black saddle dye that you just polish in. I have mink oiled the seats as well...thats why they look shiny in the pics, and so far it hasn't bled. Mink oil has single handedly revived all of my leather seats. The dye was also oil based so I'm not too worried about getting it wet.
I guess only time will tell. My one friend insists that it's going to bleed.
With the carpet, I washed it out until the water ran clear, then hung it and washed it again. I also scotchguarded it 3x (one big can) so it should be damn near water proof. I prob spent 2 weekends working on that stupid carpet but it was in bad shape.
Thanks for the compliments. :D

Yea I have seen first hand that it bleeds (a friend of mine did it with a set of white leather seats and turned them black.) the bleed enough to toast 3 of his shirts / jeans lol. but after that it was fine.. he did wash the seats though after that.. I think he dyed them 2 times. the first time they ended up grey after a washing. then the second time it his the charcoal black after washing.

rexcellent 07-09-2007, 05:36 PM looks great man! I went to Wal Mart last night and got some black dye to do my carpet. Did you pull all the carpet out and soak it in a big wash tub or something? How did you go about doing it?

Hopefully you got at least 3 bottles! I did 4 total and probably could've put more on.
The way I did it was I completely removed the carpet, laid it in the driveway and hosed it down completely. I had it completely wet, then put the dye into a spray bottle and just sprayed it down. I did about a 70% dye, 30% HOT water mixture to be able and spread the dye out. I did it 2x, let it dry and was going to put it back in but there was black dusting that got on everything it touched...so I washed it down and re-did it 2 more times. If you keep the carpet wet when doing it, the dye will distribute evenly.
After I was content w/ the color, and I couldn't wash out anymore residue from the carpet, I scotchguarded it up 3x total so it should be almost waterproof.
Just take your time, apply the dye evenly and you will be amazed at what you come up w/. Look at my old carpet before I stained it....I thought it was long gone and this was just an attempt...but now it looks as good if not better than a new carpet and it cost me very little but some time. :D
Any other q's don't hesitate... I had to figure this all out myself and had quite a bit of trial and error... it kept things interesting!

This was after 2 coats...just needed to be darker for me.
stroked 383 07-09-2007, 06:00 PM BTW, I used the liquid dye...not the powder!
mdacton 07-09-2007, 06:03 PM Did you do a new headliner or dye the old one?
I might do some of this on my firebird
rexcellent 07-09-2007, 06:12 PM thanks for the advice. All I could find was powder dye so hopefully that will work. Ill just put it in something that I can spray with and do it the same way. I might try to even find a tub or something big enough to soak it in. Ill probably do it this weekend, Ill let you know how it turns out.

I re-did it. Strip off all the old fabric, use a green brillo pad and get the foam off. Then go to a fabrics store, I used JoAnn's fabrics, and get some headliner fabric. Apply w/ some spray adhesive and thats it. If you have t-tops, its a pain in the ass to stretch around that inner curve.

Powder dye should be fine. If you could fit it in a tub, it'd def be even....I didn't want to dye my tub. Let me know how it works out for future reference if you would though!
bderlan 07-09-2007, 07:54 PM for the plastic panels did you prime and clear coat them. because i painted mine black(no prime or clear) and the piece beside the drivers seat is losing paint from getting in and out.
d2stephen 07-10-2007, 10:43 AM Looks good.
