Is the automatic trans in my 93 T/A the same 700r4 used from 88 to 92, or is it something different? What year did the 4L60E start being used, was it 1996?

The 93 z have a 700r4/4l60 some people call it a 4l60. Basically its a slightly updated 700r4 . Different electrical plug round 5 pin instead of the square 4 pin. A few other minor changes in the valve body . But the earlier units can be swapped in with a change of the plug. As for the 4l60e it came out in 93 in most trucks and 94 in cars.

installing an earlier 700 into a '93 F-Body isn't as simple as "switching the plug". The '93 has an extra checkball in the valve body that is there to cushion the reverse apply. To coincide with this, the feed hole in the reverse input housing was also changed. The '93 700 uses a 4L60E reverse housing. Regular late 700's don't even have provisions on the valve body for all the pressure switches for lock-up control. We've seen many instances where some less reputable shops have installed older 700's in a '93 and just tie off the extra wires. This route always led to some lock-up issues.

Yes, you can make an older 700 work properly, if you change the valve body, plate, wiring, and case connector. If you do this, you'll want to leave the reverse ball out of the valve body.

what lockup issues would occur if the older trans was used as is? Would it be an issue of a lockup solenoid not being turned on when it should? I am not very familiar with the 700r4 but I have a few around from TPI 3rd gen firebirds. Do they have lockup solenoids for 2-3-4 or just 4th, and is this where there the lockup difference is from the 93? Since the earlier trans is governed by the TV cable could I just use the TV cable and wire up my own lockup circuit? I have been told that the 93 still has an ECM rather than a PCM and shouldnt be controlling the trans other than lockup, is this true? Thanks for all the info, just trying to learn more about the 4th gen cars since I now have two.

You can run the earlier version without issue, You would need to do some wiring changes to allow lockup in 4th only. And either swap the plug or adapt to the round five pin plug , The additional wires are for presure switches that give feedback to the ECM about what gear the trans is in but I have found no adverse effect to not iusing them. While agreed when possible its would be easier to use the 93 units they are somewhat rare. And there is no harm in using the earllier version they did fine for many years.
