1990 L98 hp increase?darkpheonix 07-02-2007, 12:28 PM got a 90' trans am gta with the L98 and i want to know what can be done to max out the hp on this beast 89TramsAmGTA 07-02-2007, 02:35 PM Start with the exhaust system. That means headers, high flow cat(s) and a cat back with a good muffler. After that any furthers mods will be enhanced more than they would be otherwise. DAKMOR 07-02-2007, 02:57 PM Welcome to the world of engine and car modifications. I say first, ditch any excess weight you got, and give the car a nice tune-up. Gets you back to stock, and lightens ya a bit. I heard people doing LT1 parts swaps onto L98s. And of course, the dreaded response, SEARCH! If it were mine, I'd put a supercharger on it after upgrading some other parts. 1987IROC350 07-02-2007, 03:11 PM Here is a pretty good place to get some parts. http://www.tpis.com/ This would be a good practical start http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=EDL%2D3890&N=700+115&autoview=sku or maybe this If you really mean max out http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL%2D2097&autoview=sku http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=EDL%2D1411&N=700+4294925239+4294839063+115&autoview=sku I decided on a crate motor but If I had to do it all over I would have just built my L98. Gtpguy 07-02-2007, 03:19 PM First do a full tuneup, new Delco plug wires, new plugs, belt, fluids; motor, tranny, rear. That will make a nice driveability difference. Then do the free mods; plenum porting, TB bypass, and increase timing from 6* to 10 or 12*. That will give you some good gains and for practically nothing. After that, get some Long tube headers, and full exhaust or a cutout. After that look into a set of used SLP or ASM Runners. Then do gears and a stall. If you have 2.73s, step up to 3.42. DO NOT GET 3.73s. TPI is not a topend kind of motor. It's all lowend. 3.42 is PERFECT for TPI. If you have 3.23, then stay with them. You won't gain much going from the 2. Maybe a tenth for $4-500. Not worth it. Then find a nice 2600-3000 stall. Again, 3000 is it for TPI. With those mods and maybe a set of 1.7 rockers you SHOULD be right around a low 13 or high 12 depending on traction, condition of the drivetrain, and track location. mdenz3 07-02-2007, 04:28 PM I heard people doing LT1 parts swaps onto L98s. And of course, the dreaded response, SEARCH! The LT1 swap is probably one of the easyest as far as swaps goes, and I personly would recomend it if you wanted to go that route. Another good place to look is Thirdgen.org they have alot of information about TPI motors there. lt1srule 07-05-2007, 11:16 PM Put a big block in it and never look back ..Yehaa | ||
