JakeRobb 06-30-2007, 10:19 AM The Royal Pontiac club has rented out Milan Dragway next Saturday, July 7th.
This is a very friendly group of guys with a good variety of street/strip cars. You'll see people running everything from 10's to 18's. Non-Pontiacs are welcome -- so much so that the club is considering changing its name! Last month I met the club president and vice president, both of whom own C5 Z06's. :)
I'm sure most of you have been to Milan, but for those who haven't, it's a pretty nice track run by good people.
The RP club events are never crowded. I was able to hot-lap 13 passes in a row last month, in under two hours.
It's a typical club event -- a couple hours T&T, a bracket race, and a quick 16.
Cost last time was $45, cash only. There's no ATM nearby, so come prepared.
I'll be there with the Grand National (with drag radials, and if all goes well this week, some new go-fast parts), and my father-in-law will be there with his '70 Buick GSX. I'm hoping that Dan Burk (ws6transam) will make it as well.
IrocSS85 06-30-2007, 02:06 PM very intersting. hmm, might have to work this out. we'll see.
oh yeah, what time?
exgmguy 06-30-2007, 08:46 PM Do we have to let you know first, or can we just show up?
IrocSS85 07-01-2007, 12:05 AM usually its just show up. and pay the person at the front gate cash and they give you a registration # or registration card to get teched in. usually the tech guys are more lenient also for these things.
still need to know what the times are? is it 9-12am?
AL SS590 M6 07-01-2007, 05:28 AM I will be at Stanton for the Street tire shootout Saturday.
JakeRobb 07-01-2007, 11:28 AM Just show up with your cash. Gates open at 9:00. The club event usually ends around 2:00.
Oh, and if you need a helmet, you can rent one at the tower for $5 for the day.
OneSickSix 07-01-2007, 01:52 PM ooo -- sounds like fun. I'll try to make it in the Lightning.
exgmguy 07-01-2007, 03:03 PM How does the track hook on a day like this? Better than Lapeer I hope. :(
jeepbeast 07-01-2007, 05:05 PM just ran at the pinks event on fri/sat. track has never hooked better!!!
exgmguy 07-01-2007, 06:59 PM just ran at the pinks event on fri/sat. track has never hooked better!!!
That is also when the track operators know that they will be on t.v. I imagine that track prep was well done this weekend. I would just hate to waste my time and money if the track is an ice rink.
DougJ 07-01-2007, 10:59 PM the track was a little slippery early saturday afternoon but was a little better later for my second pass. it was good friday night, I did my best ever run at 9.92 had a great time at Milan dragway for the pinks all out event , made it to the final 16 !! I blew the tires away in my first round ... had a great time. look for the 70 blue / white stripes Camaro.
DJ
JakeRobb 07-01-2007, 11:41 PM Track prep has been good there in my experience. :)
IrocSS85 07-02-2007, 12:17 AM Ive been to several track rentals at milan and Id say its GREAT. last time, they even torched the starting line a few times cause it was late fall and getting cold out. I was suprised at how well they prepped the track (at least for my slow ass 11 sec. car) and how good I hooked. I kind of expected them to just open the gates and thats it. but no. vht, torch, sweep up the track, whole works. :)
GTOJack 07-02-2007, 07:41 AM Milan will be running their monthly heads up event the night before (Friday the 6th) so track prep should be top notch.
WHIPLASH 07-03-2007, 08:42 AM Chris are you going? Your car or dads???
IrocSS85 07-03-2007, 06:46 PM was goin to take dads car. but he's more then likely goin to work on my grandma's house sat. all day so prolly not at all. I really "should" get some work done in my garage though. YOU know how that goes though. lol. and Im fighting off temptation to race my car since Im trying to sell it. you want to take your car out ther? maybe I could come out for a couple hours in the morning and hang out with ya? hmm, if they open at 9, start racing at 9:30, I leave at 11am, get home around noon, still got a good 2-3 hours to work in the garage. could happen.
exgmguy 07-04-2007, 09:30 PM Looks like it is going to be almost 90 degrees on Saturday and sunny. I guess it should still be fairly cool if the track opens at 9am though.
JakeRobb 07-05-2007, 08:01 AM Looks like it is going to be almost 90 degrees on Saturday and sunny. I guess it should still be fairly cool if the track opens at 9am though.
Heh, well, I won't be setting any new best ETs in the Grand National with that kind of heat, but I'll still be there. :)
bmwmcars 07-05-2007, 06:06 PM grr. i need a trailer and my safety gear. two more weeks. :(
WHIPLASH 07-06-2007, 11:29 AM Chris and I (Dennis) will be there in morning around 9 with our rides.
JakeRobb 07-06-2007, 11:33 AM Chris and I (Dennis) will be there in morning around 9 with our rides.
Excellent! You'll find me driving the '87 Grand National. My father-in-law's '70 GSX (http://homepage.mac.com/jakerobb/gsx/) will probably be easier to spot. :)
WHIPLASH 07-06-2007, 11:37 AM Cool. We'll say hello.
IrocSS85 07-06-2007, 01:51 PM ok, Im getting very excited now. finally gonna start to get a feel for dads cars potential. and see what all my hard work will accomplish. it'll only be prelimanary runs though, still stock 10bolt. ARRRGGGG!. yeah, great F'n idea GM. lets put our weakest rear end behind our performance car.
{{{vent off}}} but anyways will be launching softly and working on shift rpms. Im hoping to break into the 11's doin this. Im positive its a mid11sec. car with a 9" that I can do clutch dumps at 4500rpm with. but till then, hoping to hit 11's period pedaling it off the line.
is your name jake Im goin to assume? we'll see ya there. jp2002LS1 will also be there with is new stock camaro as well as his uncle with his grand national. should be a good time.
see everyone there. :)
jp2002ls1 07-06-2007, 02:34 PM I'll be there with my bone stock 99' camaro. I'm guessing I'll run a 13.6@101 This will give me a good baseline before I start modding the car.
I'm also bringing my uncle with his GN. I'll probably race it more that he does. I'm guessing a 12.4@109. It is mostly stock except for a minor turbo upgrade, bigger intercooler, chip, fuel pump, alcohol injection, etc. The downside is that I'll be running it on the stock tires so the 60' is going to be terrible due to lack of traction.
JakeRobb 07-06-2007, 02:34 PM is your name jake Im goin to assume?
Yup. :) You're Charlie, right?
JakeRobb 07-06-2007, 02:35 PM I'm guessing I'll run a 13.6@101
Unless yours is a total dog, I'm betting you're going to be very pleasantly surprised with your MPH. :)
BMoney 07-06-2007, 03:33 PM How does the track hook on a day like this? Better than Lapeer I hope. :(
Milan on its worst day will hook better than Lapeer on lapeers best day!
BMoney 07-06-2007, 03:41 PM dougj, did you happen to see a viper red 79 Malibu there? small tire car? ran on Friday, but never got to make a run on Saturday.
JakeRobb 07-06-2007, 04:08 PM Milan on its worst day will hook better than Lapeer on lapeers best day!
I've never seen bad track prep at Milan.
WHIPLASH 07-06-2007, 07:14 PM Yep, stock 10-bolt here too. Gonna do some semi soft launches. Like a 1.8 60' or so. We'll see. Looking forward to it. I haven't been to Milan in 7 years.
exgmguy 07-06-2007, 07:39 PM I won't be there tomorrow. I got called in to work. Dammit. :(
IrocSS85 07-06-2007, 07:57 PM milan used to have a bad rep. for bad track prep. but Id say atleast the last 5 years its been awesome everytime Ive gone. course, Ive always had et streets, but those will spin too w/o any track prep.
jake, no, my name is chris. check post 21. ;)
IrocSS85 07-06-2007, 11:32 PM OMG Im pissed. the TA'S clutch is slipping badly. might just have to throw the camaro on the trailer instead. still undecided. its proly useless to try and race the TA like this. Im goin either way. just undecided if Im wanting to race my camaro since Im trying to sell it.
JakeRobb 07-07-2007, 06:55 AM jake, no, my name is chris. check post 21. ;)
Ah, Chris. Right, I knew it was one of those C-names. Sorry about that! :)

:(
Slipping clutch is no fun.
See you guys in a couple hours!
IrocSS85 07-07-2007, 07:02 AM ok buddy. I'll be there in the white Z28 now. Fxxx it.
IrocSS85 07-07-2007, 02:25 PM just got back. I'm happy with running a 12.05 at 111.12 on a 1.64 sixty. IN FULL STREET TRIM and 90deg. heat. wahoo! ready to hit the road coarse now.
glad to meet you though jake. thanks for letting us all know about the rental. just gotta see now if I can get a clutch in dads TA before the next rental.
chris
JESUS, just edited this thread to show 12.05, NOT 12.95! DOH!!!!!!!!!!! thansk john.
I actually got 4 runs in. didnt want to beat up on the car too bad since its for sale. ran 12.06 right off the trailer, 12.05, then 12.15(messed up shift point), then 12.10 against that damn PT CRUISER!!! that ran 12.03. he hole shot'd me by .2, then I killed him in the sixty back the .2 to get ahead of him until about the 1000foot mark. then he just barely came around me for the win.
we'll get a few vid's up on here as soon as DENNIS GETS OFF HIS ASS and posts them up somewhere. haha.
JakeRobb 07-07-2007, 03:08 PM It was good to meet you too, Chris. Dennis, you too.
The heat made it a little rough on the GN today -- my alky tank is empty, so she was running on some very hot air. Best for the day was a 14.1 @ 99.
I'm looking into getting a little bit higher stall speed, so that I can leave the line with some boost. I was bogging off the line and getting awful 60' times (2.1-2.2 on BFG drag radials).
Also, the tranny seems to be short-shifting into third, which I think is costing me too. Gonna have to look into that.
Anyway, I had fun! Thanks for coming out, guys! :)
ws6transam 07-07-2007, 03:20 PM This was the first time my wife's ever seen the Trans Am on a track, believe it or not, and she seemed to enjoy watching. She was disappointed though that I only made four runs before giving up...
Best of the day was a 12.90 @ 110 MPH. Air/fuel ratio looked okay, but intake air temps were 160 to 190 degrees at the sensor, plus I was hooking so well off the line that the engine would bog and I would botch the launch. Even with a 5000 RPM clutch dump!
That, and those 28 inch tall ET Streets made it so that I couldn't shift to fourth gear until I was already in the traps. A quickie fix of raising the rev limiter to 6600 RPM offered the best E/T but PC logs shows that I was indeed hitting 6600 RPM in the traps in third gear. I need to either change the gear ratio or return to 26-inch tall tires. Once I found that it was near-hopeless to squeak anything better out of the car, and that I was thrashing the motor beyond 6300, I decided to just watch the action with my family. That was quite enjoyable in its own way as well!
F/S: MT ET Street in 275-60-15, only six runs, $200 for the two of them.
jp2002ls1 07-07-2007, 03:55 PM It was nice meeting you guys out there today.
Jake, your dad's GSX was pretty sweet. Your GN ran well considering how hot it was.
Dennis, time to get a roll cage so you don't get kicked off the track again.
Chris, I think you need to edit your post. You posted 12.95 instead of 11.95. Your car hooked great and ran very good.
It was a great day besides the hot air.
I tripped the SES light on my car. MAF code and rear O2 sensors because my stupid cats are clogged. I'm still looking into what headers and off road Y pipe to get. My car ran like crap at higher speeds but it was still fun. Stock car with 18" rear tires I ran a 13.8@101, I could also use some more traction.
JakeRobb 07-07-2007, 06:37 PM Jake, your dad's GSX was pretty sweet. Your GN ran well considering how hot it was.
Thanks! For the record, that's my wife's dad. :)
I'm still looking into what headers and off road Y pipe to get.
If you're on a budget, the Pacesetter longtubes seem to be the #1 choice (get them ceramic-coated for best results). If you want to spend some money, a stainless steel set from Kooks or QTP is tough to beat. I've heard of some customer service issues with QTP, but the product is supposed to be top notch.
As for the ORY, just buy the one that goes with your headers.
When the budget allows, I'll be giving Kooks a call. :)
IrocSS85 07-08-2007, 12:18 AM Chris, I think you need to edit your post. You posted 12.95 instead of 11.95. Your car hooked great and ran very good.

.
fixed. thanks john. I had to get cleaned up and run back out the door, and somehow just hit the wrong key. see how fast you can make your car .9 slower? lol.
GTOJack 07-08-2007, 03:08 PM There are no Royal Pontiac club rentals of Milan in August. Next one is Sept 15 and 2 in Oct. I was gonna go but I found out a tree limb dented my GTO hood when that storm blew thru here Thur and I was on a haul to Texas. I need to find a superb body shop to fix it right so I can sell it.
WHIPLASH 07-08-2007, 09:29 PM Yeah, it was great to meet you guys. Jake, a personal thank you for a great time at Milan. I've never been able to do back to back runs. Unbelievable. And one sharp GN!!!
I'll download 3 videos tomorrow at work. That way I'm getting paid to download my videos. LOL
Chris, glad you got to run my ride. I still owe ya quite a few more.
PS: how in the hell does a PT Cruiser run 12 o'ssss??? And beat Chris (that video to come) LOL
IrocSS85 07-08-2007, 09:39 PM PS: how in the hell does a PT Cruiser run 12 o'ssss??? And beat Chris
he got lucky??????
or, how bout this one
he had a tailwind helping him????
I let the car I was lined up with go alone cause I knew his car would be a good close race cause my buddy told me he was running 12.0's too.
JakeRobb 07-08-2007, 11:09 PM PS: how in the hell does a PT Cruiser run 12 o'ssss??? And beat Chris (that video to come) LOL
How about 12.1 @ 116? That thing smoked the GSX without breaking a sweat.
It was a PT GT, which has the same powertrain as an SRT-4. Those engines have some pretty impressive potential!

It's still a PT Loser...
Sorry I didn't make it out. Didn't want to run the car in the hot weather. I figure if I'm going to go, it's going to be cool out so I can get some decent numbers. :p

Not quite scared of the heat....more scared of running a 12.5 and breaking the rear on the next pass when I know the car is 11's capable.
IrocSS85 07-09-2007, 02:24 PM yeah I hear ya.
thanks D for posting that. imagine the time youd post if you could actually launch hard in that car and pull say a 1.50 sixty instead of the 1.8000. Id say your car could run 10.5 if you got some better rims tires (drag wheels), ditch the front sway bar, get a torque arm, panhard rod, 9" with 3:73 gears, and some nice front QA1's, in something other then 90deg. heat.
ok, thats about $4-5K in parts. start saving. oh, and dont forget the rollcage and firesuit. :)

Since I've owned it, the only powertrain changes I've made were new vavlesprings/seals, new spark plugs, switched to an ORYP (to gain ground clearance ;)), tweaked the tune and corrected the pushrod length (some numbnutz thought 7.35" was a good length for an LS1). The previous owner trapped 118mph with it....so I at least want to go that fast and I figure I have my best shot at that on a cool day. :)

dont forget the clutch. thats worth atleast 30RWHP.

Tiz why I said powertrain instead of drivetrain. ;) :D
Actually, the LS7 clutch is a tad bit heavier from what I hear. So, I may have lost some. :(
IrocSS85 07-09-2007, 07:44 PM yeah the flywheel is DEF heavier. but, thats ok, you'll make up for that by not dropping soo many rpms during a shift and on the launch.

Heck I went racing in the same heat and ran 11.16s at 120 instead of 11.0 at 122 or maybe 10s in the cold. Just do it.
WHIPLASH 07-17-2007, 10:48 AM Here is the long awaited PT Cruiser run against Chris. That son of a bitch flies!!!
http://video.ls1tech.com/video/8f3eca60-4458-4f14-89cf-996e00b27ffa.htm
IrocSS85 07-17-2007, 07:29 PM yeah, that one still stings. here's the time ticket from that race. yellow losing ticket. im in left lane all these tickets. I could change a million things (cheaply and easily)to make my car faster. doubt he could say the same. plus, I way short shifted 2-3, thats when he jumped ahead too. hard to tell in the vid, but I was ahead until prolly 3/4 track. he won by about 1/2 car length (my bumper to his rear tire)

here's all my time tickets from the day. both of the slower times were me shifting poorly.

SSpdDmon 07-17-2007, 08:37 PM Shifting poorly??? You have an automatic! No excuses! ;)
JakeRobb 07-17-2007, 10:13 PM Damn, that PT was cutting 1.8 60' times!
IrocSS85 07-17-2007, 10:42 PM Shifting poorly??? You have an automatic! No excuses! ;)
well there aint no clutch, but I do manually shift it. and w/o a shift kit, it is very slow to react on the 1-2 shift, but not the 2-3 shift, as I found out. so 1-2 happend about 6600 (alittle too late) and 2-3 happend at 5900rpms. way too low. it kinda bogged for a half a second. more like a "lug" then a bog. didnt get another run after that (in my car) before they started the bracket racing. then I had to go.
when I built the trans, I didnt put in a shift kit cause I really wanted to put in a manual valve body. but thought I might sell the car. so Id better hold off. oh, and its an oldschool 700r4, not a 4l60E.
ws6transam 07-17-2007, 11:10 PM It's not that old 700R4 I sold you, is it?
SSpdDmon 07-18-2007, 12:30 AM I know Chris...I'm just giving you ****. ;)
You going to make it to the MM picnic this weekend? We're also meeting up at B-Dubs this Thursday after work if you wanted to grab a beer and some wings...
WHIPLASH 07-18-2007, 07:25 AM That PT Kroozer was stupidly fast.  Total sleeper.
No excuses Chris. ;) I still can't believe that you were pulling 1.6's on Nittos. Nice
IrocSS85 07-18-2007, 07:40 AM It's not that old 700R4 I sold you, is it?
no, but that ones awaiting a new life again under my bench at work. :)
mike, dont think I can make anything this week. sat. is full, thur. I work late, but could poss. make it down for some wings. is that the one in westland?
dennis, me either. :metal:
