LT1 Sitting for 4 Months

Car: 1995 Pontiac LT1 Formula Firebird
Garaged: 4 months ago
Condition: It ran before I garaged it. It did have an overheating issue because one of the hoses has a leak.

I am considering bringing it back to life, I've paid off all my debit and I just wanna start throwing a couple hundred bucks a month at it. Anyway, I know I should change the oil, get the battery recharged, check the coolant level. What about the gasoline?

Anything else you can think of?

Thank you,

- Joe

The gas should be fine. Change the oil for sure, check the tire pressure, and it wouldn't hurt to change the other fluids as well, the tranny and the rearend.

Cool, my friend said the same thing about the gas. I was thinking it went bad quicker than that. I'm definitely going to change the oil. The transmission fluid isent that old. I had a transmission coolant line burst on me at 140,000 miles so I think I'll hold off on that. The rear end, now thats another story :-P

I really appreciate the feedback.

I've had gas sit for that long before, never had any issues with it. If you ever plan on storing your car for long intervals in the future, just top it off and add a fuel treatment such as Stabil into the gas tank.

I would pull the fuse to the fuel pump and crank it over till you build oil pressure,so your not firing the motor dry. After you have oil pressure replace the fuse and start it.I I always let my car sit for winter 3 to 4 months and it starts right up like i drove it yesterday.BUT now the motor is out with 59000 miles an a spun bearing. We believe it is from starting so fast without oil pressure. So I'll be rigging up a by pass switch to shut off the injectors so I can crank it to get oil flowing after storage gooid luck!

All you have to to is pull the PCM BAT fuse if you want to crank it to build oil pressure. That will kill spark and fuel.

My car goes away for six monhs or more each year.

No need to crank for oil pressure,, in fact I think it is worse since you are still cranking it over but at lower rpm thus lower psi,,,,,,, check fluids and start her up.

Hey, thanks for all your advice. I am definitely going to try that out. I am going to pick up the battery today and change out the oil. I need to change my filter because its been about 15K miles but I am going to hold off since I have basically no room in my garage. I don't know how I am even going to change the oil.

When your just cranking it over there isn't as much stress on the rotating assembly as when the engine fires, and those pistons are shoving those rods into the bearings with little or no film of oil between.Since I pulled my low mileage motor apart because of a spun bearing. 1 bad rod bearing an the rest didn't look so hot. (But the motor was spotless inside) I talked to alot of engine builders most of them think they start too fast, especially after long storage. Just my 2+ cents

for what it's worth I had my car off the road for 2 years. I ran it a little here and a little there to keep it alive and such, but i'm sure at one point it did sit for a year or greater. Anyway, I didn't gas up for over 2 years (18 miles/2 years) and it ran fine. I just had to replace the battery, that was all.
