Quick Oil question

Had a real quick question before changing the oil on my trans am for the first time. I heard somewhere that switching from regular to synthetic oil after a certain amount of miles could be bad for the engine, is there some truth to this? I bought the car used and like I said this is the first time that I personally have changed the oil so I'm not sure what was put into the car in the past. The car is a 98 with about 41k on her now. I'd like to use synthetic but if it might do more harm than good I'd just stick with organic.

Thanks in advance.

same deal

I bought my 98 Z28 with 31,000 miles and within 500 miles changed the oil with 5w30 mobil 1 synthetic. I know te previous owner used regular oil. I know have 41,000 miles and chnged the oil every 3000 miles since then and it runs great. First change over I noticed it used a little oil, less then 1/2 a quart between changes. Since then not a drop. Every time I check the oil its right at the full line. I say put the synthetic in!

The biggest reason for not running synthetic in an older motor is due to leaks. From what I've been told synthetic seems to find any weakness in a seal and exploit it. So if your engine isn't leaking oil. Go for the synthetic.

Sounds good guys, the car seems to be in perfect mechanical condition right now except for a little piston slap so I'll go with the synthetic.
