Clean97Z 06-13-2007, 02:23 PM I'm trying to decide on a new catback system to replace the flowmaster. I am not sure if I like the sound anymore. I love the old school muscle car sound but don't want to deal with true duals. The only reason I am considering the magnaflow is because it is stainless. The hooker from what I have heard sounds pretty good, but it is aluminzed and I would like stainless.GMMG might be an option but I am not sure I want to put that much money in an exhaust, plus I have a credit at Thunder Racing I would love to use up. Does anybody have any good videos of a cammed LT1 and magnaflow exhaust? I did some looking at LS1 sounds, and LT1 engine and couldn't come up with anything. Other suggestions are welcome as well.
Thanks
2000GTP 06-13-2007, 03:02 PM They are both good catbacks, but personally, I like the tone of the Hooker better. The selling point of the Magnaflow for me was the fact that it is stainless and will last most likely the life of the car.
exgmguy 06-13-2007, 03:30 PM I have never had a Magnaflow, but I just installed a Hooker exhaust and it sounds great.
pianoman35 06-13-2007, 04:30 PM Go with a hooker...:D
LastBreedLS1 06-13-2007, 06:38 PM i got a magna flow and it sounds good. deep, nice tone. and with some chrome polish, looks amazing too!
Clean97Z 06-13-2007, 06:48 PM I am not against a hooker, but my wife might not like it....:D
I just like the idea of stainless, but I would like to hear a few more magnaflow exhausts. I know the sound of the exhaust changes a lot when going from the stock exhaust to LT's and an off road y-pipe. It helps to hear it with a cam too. I appreciate the input though.

Same here.:)
Unertl42 06-14-2007, 08:36 PM I also really like my Magnaflow exhaust:thumb:
Z28LT1_Just_Nasty 06-14-2007, 11:43 PM The hooker is pretty quiet below ~2300 rpms, but past that it has a great tone. I like it because it allows me to creep around when I don't want to be loud and allows me to be loud when I want to be.
Capn Pete 06-15-2007, 10:31 AM I'm very happy with the new Magnaflow on my car :thumb:. I previously had a Flowmaster, but it rotted out within ~3 years . The stainless also sold my on the Magnaflow, and especially for the price!!
The idle is much more mellow than the Flowmaster, but wide open it sounds really nice :thumb:. My buddy also has a Magnaflow on his '97 Z28 (LT1) and it sounds very similar to my car (quiet/mellow at idle, but louder - obviously - as it cranks up).
I'm done putting crap exhaust on my car .
GreenDemon 06-15-2007, 11:48 AM Magnaflow. Stainless is always the better option.
karpetcm5 06-15-2007, 04:32 PM i have magnflows its very quite for me, it actually sounds pretty deep not raspy or that V8 snarl but it sounds much different then flowmasters took me a while to get use to it almost sounded like a V6 with a muffler lol so initially sound wise wasnt happy then got use to it. Now im running magnaflows catback with a cutout before the axle and it sounds awesome, quality wise i cant complain at all fit nice no rust at all, by the way this is on a 93 Z.
custom95 06-15-2007, 07:06 PM I've also had a hooker aerochamber catback, sounded awesome, but rotted out in about 2-3 years. Recently bought magnaflow and haven't had a chance to install it, or finish my motor swap for that matter, but my friend has a magnaflow on his ls1 and it sounds nice. Plus it's stainless!
Clean97Z 06-15-2007, 07:51 PM I think at this point it is either going to be magnaflow, or I will just step up and purchase a GMMG exhaust. I still want to hear an LT1 w/ LT's ORY and preferably a cam to really see what it sounds like. I just don't want to go back to a non-stainless steel exhaust. Thanks for all of the input.
Red95M6Z28 06-15-2007, 09:34 PM Anything other than a Borla will be quiter than your Flowmaster. I happen to LOVE the sound of flowmaster it just doesnt perform as well as most other cat backs. Magna flow didnt sound good to me on my basically stock LT1. Hooker sounds real nice. Corsa is great to. Im waiting to buy a b&B Triflo just for the tips LOL
scof0elife 07-10-2007, 06:18 PM I've had magnaflow in the past and now I have a hooker :) but IMO the hooker sounds better. It really is quite quiet on idle, until you get on it.
lovescamaros25 07-10-2007, 07:47 PM Magnaflow all the way!!!!!!!You will love the sound man.Plus it is stainless steel.IMO the best Catback for its price range.Deep sound while cruising...screams under full throttle.Look at the tips and tell me which one looks better.
Clean97Z 07-10-2007, 09:26 PM My biggest concern is how the sound changes once you go to LT's and an ORY. I know my flowmaster changed a lot. There weren't a lot of sound samples of Magnaflow catbacks with LT's, ORY's and a cam, and the hooker sounds pretty good but the material, and the comments that it is quiet make me think I should look somewhere else. I am waiting for the Car Craft summer cruise to see if I can find some Fbodies with Magnaflow, Hooker and maybe if I am lucky GMMG exhaust. But the more I think about it I lean closer to GMMG, the cost is a little high but hell I have so much money into it now, I might as well keep going.
Kredz28 07-10-2007, 09:39 PM MAGNAFLOW...hooker is a nice CB, and i love the tips, but magnaflow has a beautifull tone...i loved mine
z275plus 08-04-2007, 05:14 PM Another vote for the Hooker.
Bersaglieri 08-04-2007, 10:17 PM I get exhaust compliments more than anything else on my car with a GMMG. I even had some exhaust shop guys chase me thru town one night just to ask what/where I got my exhaust from.

97formulakid 08-04-2007, 10:48 PM Both the Magnaflow and Hooker sound similar I think. I have heard both on a cammed LT, ORY LS1 and at idle they were quiet with some rumble but got loud at WOT. My friend with the Magnaflow got rid of his because he thought it was too quiet.
Save your money and get a GMMG. By far the best exhaust, IMO, out there for these cars. I always get compliments on the way mine sounds and looks!!! I can't wait to get a cam in it because it was just sound down right mean!
I love the sound of my SLP Loudmouth I, however it's a tad bit excessive. I'd like to go with a magnaflow just because of the nice healthy tone and long chrome tips.
but I'm most likely going to buy a GMMG to replace the loudmouth, nothing beats a chambered exhaust.
Does anyone have clips, and/or pics, of the GMMG? Who carries that exhaust?

Clips give it little justice. www.gmmginc.net

_94Lt1_ 08-05-2007, 08:00 AM Stainless is good .. but for $100 less I chose the Hooker ... i dont drive my car but once every other week or so ... but if your gonna be driving alot, then stainless is the way to go .. just dont ever drive mine. Buddy has Magnaflow on a 93 Trans Am, it is just too quite and I personally do not like the tone. Hooker is the best sounding exhaust ive ever heard on small block. +1 for Hooker .....:)

Like he said, don't base your opinion on sounds clips, it sounds so much better in person
I'm now very interested in the GMMG exhaust. It's freakin' expensive. Is it unbearably loud? I'm not really interested in something that's just overwhelmingly loud. I'd like to be able to carry on a conversation if someone else were in the car.
jpack24 08-05-2007, 07:47 PM Here is my custom grind cam through pacesetters, ORY !cat, magnaflow, idle @ 650 and revs to 6500.

Not loud at all inside the car. Ya you can definetly tell it has an exhaust but no drone or resonating like the Loudmouth.
I've had people stop and ask me all the time if my car has a cam. It sounds like it does.
One more thing, at WOT it is audible sex!
Greed4Speed 08-06-2007, 05:31 PM I would think a Hooker would be capable of magnaflows. Don't ask, it just sounded crude.
I'll throw out another one for ya. SLP dual/dual. Its relatively quite with a nice sound. It also sounds great with headers, !cats and a larger cam.
Personally buying a new catback would be a last resort. Check local boards/sections or talk to people at meets. There is almost always someone with a catback in their garage they want rid of. This is especially true if you live in a state that allows true duals. I picked up a Borla in good shape for $250 or 275. Either way it was under $300 and way less than a new one. Before that I had a Mufflex system that I picked up for ~$150.
Behold!

switch 08-09-2007, 08:25 PM I have the Hooker cat-back and love it. Doesn't boom when going down the highway at all, but when you get into it, sounds great. Flows pretty good too. 100% satisfied with Hooker and would recommend to anyone with an LT1. (don't know what it sounds like on an LS1)
smokintires 05-01-2008, 05:18 PM i found a link for a sound clip of the magnaflow exhasut 16723 i thnk it sound great. i put this on my 98 SS

GMMG, LM1, and LM2 will all be louder then the Borla or Flowmaster. ;)

GMMG is for sure, since that it was I decided to go with. I do love the sound though.
