Just to set the record strait chronologically:

Ford sues Nav over warranty costs and engine price.

Ford "withholds" payments to covery warranty costs.

Nav stops shipping engines.

Judge forces Ford to pay for engines and Nav to restart shipping.

Nav sues Ford for developing its own HD diesel.

Nav sues Ford for developing its own LD diesel.

Sounds like Ford needs to drop Nav asap.

Why? Because Navistar is suing about Ford breaching contract and trying to reverse engineer the V6 that they didn't want so they could make it on their own?

Because it's obvious there are problems, and problems with a supplier you are dependant on to produce vehicles are not good.

Yeah that'll work out great for Ford.

Toyota: Hi, Navistar? We heard about your difficulties with Ford.

Navistar: Yeah it sucks. We've been partners in business for a long time.

Toyota: Well, funny you mention that. We've been thinking about getting into the HD pickup market. How about you send some of those engines our way? We've got money to burn and will spend heavily to help you update your facilities in return for minority ownership.

Navistar: Cool. Where do we sign? We'd love to stick it to Ford right now.

You do realize that the 4.4L Diesel that Ford is bringing out, is based on their own Ford/PSA (designed jointly) diesel, which as been used in Europe for years................ in 3.6L form.

At least do some research before you spout of something dumb like that.

Wouldn't happen. Wouldn't matter if it did anyways, then there'd just be another viable truck on the market.

FYI - Navistar was involved in the early development of the 3.6L.

You might be closer to the truth than you think...

Toyota has its own in-house, Japanese diesel manufacturer - Hino. It is widely speculated that if Toyota jumps into the HD truck fray, Hino will be the engine designer/supplier.

How 'bout Nissan? They eyed the HD market a while back but shelved plans for such a truck.

What I'm getting at here is that Ford (or any company) needs to take care of their critical suppliers just as much as suppliers need to take care of their critical customers.

On a somewhat related note.... I know Isuzu is the biggest diesel manufaturer in the world but I've always wanted to see a Caterpillar / GM deal. I'm so sick of the Cummins groupies. Imagine the marketing you could do with Cat power. :D

"Involved" ok. However, they did not design it................ thus, Ford has stolen nothing.

I just think that Navistar is pissed, because Ford wants them to pay the warranty costs that they had agreed to pay (on the 6.0). It turned out to be alot more money than what they wanted to spend, so they are diverting attention any way they can.

I in no way think that Ford is completely innocent here. However, I have read about how shoddy the Navistar facility was, and how Ford spent millions in Navistars facility, to try to get them into the 21st century (quality control, and durability testing was hideous).

I for one would love to have a Cat powerplant in a fullsize GM built pickup. Might need a change of shorts.

You are correct! Nissan will have a diesel powered Titan by 2009 with Navistar building the V8 diesel.

Nissan is also launching a diesel Maxima in 2010 with engines being built by Renault (who owns 44% of Nissan)
