HELP!! I need to quiet my car down!!

Just like stated above. Since i put my 383 in, the car is just too loud for me!:shock:
Here is what my system consists of:

Pacesetter LT's with 3" y-pipe and dumped a foot before the axle with a spintech muffler. NO CATS ALSO.

Anyways i know a lot has said Magnaflow to mellow the tone, but i just cant afford the $380 catback + $120 labor = $500ish. Im on a budget of around $200 for everything!! So im trying to figure if i could keep my setup but change mufflers :shrug:

Could i replace the spintech muffler with a Magnaflow bullet type muffler? How about SLP resonators, will that quiet it down? Maybe put a cat back on?
Cone inserts?

Sorry for all the questions, im just frustrated. Living at apartments and leaving to work at 7a.m. dont make happy neighbors!:lol:

SLP resonator will be even louder, and sound like crap.
If i were you, i would take the spintech off, and put on a hooker aerochamber. Good tone, and fairly quiet.

is it still gonna be loud the the aerochamber even when its dumped before the axle? Everyone is telling me that a catback is the best way to quiet down the exhaust tone.

Maybe a bullet muffler from magnaflow and put a catalytic convertor back on?

adding a catalytic converter will reduce the "rasp", u can put a bullet muffler on where a cat. would go and have the same effect.

Im going to search around to see if i can find a bullet type muffler from magnaflow. Im sure having it dumped doesnt help either because it "echos" off the ground and car.

I have a flowmaster muffler with dual 4" pipes but dont think that will help

i have duals w/ moroso spiral flows, and i have very little drown inside the car, and its dumped

If you stick with a bullet type muffler your not really going to get it much quieter. To tone it down you're going to have to pony up the dough and get a catback setup, either made or buy one.

I would get the magnaflow. I know your car is a totally different beast than mine but I am very impressed at how quiet my car is up until I go WOT. I installed my own as well. Unless you need some fabrication done I wouldn't pay anyone to install a cat back. It's very simple and straight forward. Right there will save you $120.:D

yeah fasteddie your right. It probably still will be loud with a bullet type muffler and dumped. Guess i'll just save up and get the Magnaflow catback. A muffler shop will have to put it on because they will have to cut out the spintech muffler and attach the catback to the y-pipe. thanks for your guys info.

Here is a picture of my exhaust. Will it still be loud if i replace that spintech muffler with a bullet magnaflow? I know with a short exhaust like this it probably will still be. Is my best bet to get a whole catback?

you could look at getting a new muffler put on, and having the exhaust extended back further too, that way the exhaust isnt right under you

FYI, I have an iron block 396 LT1 (N/A). Headers to a 3" is NOT acceptable through a Magnaflow cat back. With the increased displacement/air requiring 3" pipe, and larger than stock cams, the exhaust volumn is beyond anything a stock engine would make.

I added an 18" glasspack down the center instead of a straight I-pipe, still have a single cat, and the Magnaflow 3" to 2x2.5" exhaust... too loud for street use.

The Magnaflow muffler is noticablly smaller than stock, but worse, it seems to be almost an empty chamber... the passenger exhaust tip is nearly a straight-through design to the 3" inlet.


The big issue here is not that he has headers, cam, or a 3" pipe... but that the engine is bigger and likely higher compression than stock, and the iron block LT1 is way louder than aluminum blocks.

This is a pretty old thread, not much of an issue now... but for those searching the archives for a quiet muffler I'd pass by the Magnaflow for sure. I have an electric cutout valve to close off the passenger side tip when needed (yes, kind of opposite of their intent :)) to force the exhaust through the driver side only... but it's a fix I shouldn't have to have made. :-/

Best option is to find a large, quiet muffler and a cut out for the track. :-/

Well um, theres your problem. Cats quiet the exhaust more than a performace muffler does, especially at low RPM's.

I had dual cats into a 3 1/2" Mufflex with single Spintech muffler and single pipe exhaust exit. All behind a 97ss LT1 383ci D1 with many mods. The cats (Random Tech) were good flowing, but were blown out with all the D1 flow. I started to experiment. Installed (2) 2 1/2" straight sections in place of cats. Good flow, but, lots of noise thru the Spintech. Resonance was a problem @ 2K rpm. I added a CCI insert (3 1/2" 3 disc), and a 3 1/2" QTP dump for full flow open. Inserts are small and easy installed if you have a MIG welder and cut off grinder/ saw. Now, sound level is livable. My experience... flow is always a problem with chambered mufflers, and, sound is excessive with straight thru type mufflers. B.
