my 95 camaro and a new vette

this was my first real race besides a few mustangs. i was going down the road when a new vette pulled out. i dont know if it was the z06 or not but it did not have the pop up head lights. it was yellow with crome rims. i passed him and he didnt bite so i kept going. a few miles later i seen him coming fast. so i down shifted and got up to his speed before he passed me. i started pulling on him right away when a truck had pulled out in my lane and i had to slam on the breaks. as soon as i could get over i did and caught up to the vette again and he is still at wot. i get back over and started to pass him again and he let off. a few more miles up the road i was in front of him and he started to test my rear bumper. so reved it up a few times to let him know i was going to hit it. we both went wot and within a few seconds i had put 3 car lengths on him and he shut down. i went to do a u turn and he gave me the thums up as he went by. im very happy with my 383

Do you know how much faster your car has to be to be able to hit the brakes, go around somebody, and pass the other guy again all while he's WOT? Considering today's "plain" Vette traps what - 112-114 mph? - you'd have to be capable of 130+ traps to pull that off.

Exactly. Also why it was not a Z06. Good run.

the more i think about it the more i realize it wasnt a z06. but i wasnt on the breaks long at all to wait for him to pass me at those speeds, just a second. my freind owns a machanic shop and his doctor is bringing his 06 or 07 viper 6 speed in to have the breaks done on june 6 and we are going to run them. the viper only has 30 some thousand miles on it. he is also the one that built my car. i also shift at 7000 rpms.

Nice kill def. I would tend to agree however that it was not a Z06. Im sure that 383 is fast, but you would not be catching and stomping a Z06 like that. Beating one from a dig by a bit sure, but stopping and catching up while it was at WOT, unlikely.

Precisely. Even letting off the gas for a split second, would result in you being left in the dust if the other vehicle is still wot. That's like a bone stock 1988 honda vs a new Impala LTZ.. that's the kind of advantage you'd need to re-reel him in like that.

well, i did. that corvette is rated at 400hp, so they are planting something around 350rwhp (being nice). and the guy who built mine said i would be planting to the ground around 500rwhp. that would do it. and on how that race went i should be around that. i dont have a dyno shop near me anymore. i need to take a trip to have it dynoed. i will find out with this viper.

No offence, but you aren't putting near 500rwhp to the ground. Maybe 420-440 if everything is right.

I would bet the 'vette got out of it for a second when you had to slow down otherwise you never would have caught him. Try just lifting off the throttle and restabbing it in a race sometime, you probably won't make up the difference unless you are grosely overpowering who you are racing (150-200+rwhp)

That was my thought unless he had a 50-75 shot. 500rwhp would be quite the achomplishment, if not a record for a stock ported casting, hydralic 383.

well i dont have facts on the hp the motor has untill i go to the dyno, im just going on what the guy (my freind) who built it said. now i do have the facts on the race and he did not let of because i was right on his azz as soon as he passed me. i have near $16000 in my build and still going. i shift at 7000 rpms. and that cam hits hard at 4000 to 7000 rpms, so i have one hell of a top end. i know i need to upgrade the brake system because the stock breaks wont stop me at those speeds. they just heat up and stink. luckly there was nobody in front of me.

I would get the car dynoed before I tell people the power you think it is making....nice car though and I am sure you have a lot of hard work and lotsa money in it.
