Newb Transmission Question

Alright, I am totally stumped and brain-drained for the day. I have a 1998 A4 and I'm trying to check the transmission fluid level and the dipstick has this "Trans/Lock" thing on it. I flip it and pull and the darn thing just doesn't want to budge. Am I using this thing right? Do I have to spin it or turn it a special way or something?

It's pretty common for thse things to get stuck in there. Work with it gently. You might even try a heat gun on LOW setting, around the outside of the tube.
