What's the difference between the 3.23 and the 2.73 gears in the A4 1995 Z28? What does one do better then the other?!

Gear Ratio difference95Z28LT1-PA 05-22-2007, 06:31 PM What's the difference between the 3.23 and the 2.73 gears in the A4 1995 Z28? What does one do better then the other?! Injuneer 05-22-2007, 06:38 PM The rear axle ratio multiplies torque at the rear wheels, in proportion to the ratio. A 2.73 gear multiplies the driveshaft torque by 2.73, a 3.23 multiplies it by 3.23. In effect, swapping in a set of 3.23:1 gears gives you about 18% more rear wheel torque off the line. On the other hand, at any given MPH in any given gear, the engine will be turning 18% higher RPM with the 3.23's. Its a trade-off.... more pull out of the hole, vs less MPH in each gear. Gas mileage may suffer. Moving to "Drivetrain". LSWHO 05-22-2007, 06:58 PM I doubt gas mileage changes. You need LESS throttle for the same acceleration. My brother has 96 formula with 3.23s I have a 97 Trans Am with 2.73s We raced BONE stock and he'd pull like crazy from a roll and he'd pull a couple cars in the 1/4. About 3 tenths difference in speed. We both get the same gas mileage. I'm supposed to get better mileage, but like i said I have to press the gas more and for a longer period of time for the same acceleration. The ONLY time I'd say it would be better would be on long trips. I got 24mpg going to San Diego. He'd probably only get 23. Huge difference... yeah right. His car pulls harder at any speed. My car feels slow as piss compared to his. 95Z28LT1-PA 05-23-2007, 02:06 AM Wow that much of a difference, that's crazy | ||
