While changing water pumps, I decided to test my coolant temp sensor as per shoebox's instructions. I set the multimeter to ohms and touched hte leads together to verify that I am getting a reading then proceeded to put the leads to each of the sensor prongs. Im not getting any reading. Am I doing this wrong or does this mean the sensor is not working?????

A direct short would read "0" ohms. A complete open circuit would indicate infinite resistance. Anything other than one of those should produce a resistance reading.

I am geting infinite resistance. so this means my sensor needs replacing?

if you are probing the sensor, then yes

Yes, I was probing the prongs of the sensor and getting infinite resistence. I wonder if this was the culprit for the crappy fuel mileage ive been experiencing...

likely,

open = reads cold

cold = more fuel injected
