My car has a 9 inch in it. I have not driven it yet. I believe it has a nodular case. It has 3.90 gears, detroit locker, with 35 spline mark williams axles. My car made 466 rwhp before I got it. I hope it holds up to my abuses.

Not sure yet as I used to run a 12 bolt before the buildup. I will say it is a major PITA to push the car into and out of the shop when doing things cause of the spool.


Currently running 40 spline axles but will be getting a new set of gun drilled axles to lighten up the rear a bit as well as narrowing the housing.

I have a 9 inch, a truck case, the one right under a nodular case. Has a daytona pinion bearing support, truck yolk, 4.10 gear, old style detroit locker. I make around 380 RWHP(never dynoed, guessing from my 89.1 MPH 1/8 mile speed through closed exhaust@3800 lbs). Im my opinion do not buy a locker as I have. It is very nasty on the sreet moreso with a manual tranny car. They do make a "soft locker" now as I understand. The factory Trac-LOC posi's are very strong if built right up to around 450RWHP with a manual tranny and even more with an automatic.

If you're running a T56, do NOT use a grey cast case. They just won't hold up. At least mine didn't. Split the case in half and pulled the pinion out the front. Luckily didn't make much of a mess.....except for the starting line. Now, there are cases out there that are not labelled with a big "N", but do have two vertical ribs above the pinion support. I was told these are also nodular cases, but were not identified as such. Might find one of those cheap if you're lucky.

-Locker never really makes that much noise, it will ratchet or even sometimes drag a tire on tight turns but only noticeable on grass or gravel.
-I don't consider a spool to be a street application but that's just me.
-I have been in a 98TA M6 with a regular locker and it was pretty noticeable.

I'm not sure about the horsepower, but check sig for times, as far as street abilaty I dont mind the spool, I never know it's back there unless I make a sharp u-turn or am in gravel or dirt, and then its only a little chirping, and I dont even have power steering and it's not that noticible.

He's right the two vertical ribs do indicate a Nodular case, but these are factory ford Nodular cases, there are not many left in circulation making them hard to find and very expensive ,unless you can find someone who dosent know what they have.

Also dont get the lowest gear you can live with for great performance, as I did. I went with a 4.86 when I ordered my rear because all the tracks around here are 1/8th mi., drivability suffered greatly, 55mph was about 4500rpms, I actually picked up on Nitrous when I went to a 3.73 gear, I lost less than a tenth on motor, but I picked up .15 on motor and .20 on Nitrous when I went from 28x10's to 26x10's, so actually now with 26x10's and a 3.73 I run faster on motor and nitrous than with a 4.86 and 28x10's, :confused: and the drivabilty improvement from 4.86 to 3.73 was tremendous. :D

All i'm saying is do your homework when choosing a gear, if you want a Nodular case I suggest buying a standard one and trying stock gears first to see what works the best with your combo. then when you find a combo that works well buy a Nodular one in the same configuration, and save those $50 standard junkyard cases for spares

The reason I went with 31 spline axles is most factory ford 9in.'s had 31 spline carriers, this way I would have no prob using the "junkyard" cases

I'm not sure about the vertical ribs as a way of identifying the case but there are nodular cases without the large N on the outside. They will still have a small N on the inside of the case and are just as good and easier to find.

Just stay away from the WAR casting.

Factory Nodular housing. 4.86 gears, spool, Billet pinion support. 525hp, Th400 with brake. So far so good.
