I have read to use 4 quarts of Dexron III ATF. A friend insists not to use Dexron entirely, because it's thin, and if I put some lucas 80-90 gear lube mixed with lucas tranny fluid it would be smoother? Thoughts?

Dextron III ATF seems to be what MOST people on here use

I personally use Royal Purple and LOVE it

You are not supposed to put gear lube in it.

151K miles on my original T56 tranny with Dexron III, no issues.

If it calls for Dexron III, then run Dexron III .

Who is your friend, and what does he know????? :p

If you're really concerned, you can run a synthetic ATF (although it's really NOT "necessary") or you can buy, DIRECT FROM GM, their "synchro-mesh" fluid. But DON'T run "gear oil".
