RealQuick 04-11-2007, 09:07 AM Ok, not alot of cash, but I'll paypal someone $10 for the closest guess on Roadie's dyno results for this Friday. He is going to push the setup until it stops making power. I think the IC setup will end up being a restriction, but we'll see. I'll start by guessing 685rwhp ... Here is his combo:
8.65:1 355 shortblock (Eagle 4340 crank & H-beams, SRP pistons)
stage 3 Trickflow heads
220/230 on a 114 LSA
T-76 Q-trim
ceramic coated RealQuick hot parts (thanks dude!)
ATI twin high-flow intercoolers
TiAL 50mm BOV
38mm wastegate
FAST
White Racing PCB
Delteq, MSD DIS-4, NGK 4554 plugs
custom dual in-tank Walbros, custom rails, -8an/-6an feed/return, Aeromotive FPR, 75lb/hr delphi injectors
supporting mods:
T-56, B&M Ripper & McLeod street twin
3" HD steel shaft
Moser 12 bolt & TA cover
Spohn TA
13" Baer brakes
Suspension Techniques sway bars
Hotchkis STB
Hotchkis springs & Bilstein HD shocks
BMR PHR Relo kit

Down south... About 45 minutes east of downtown St. Louis.
Roadie 04-13-2007, 11:23 AM Did anyone guess 0?
The 108k mile T56 went BOOM on my way to the dyno. I was cruising along at 65mph in 6th gear and out of nowhere came the sound of a shotgun. The back tires locked up, then freed up again. I pulled off to the side of the road and the rears locked up for the last 20 feet or so.
The engine starts and runs fine, but if i let out the clutch, even in neutral, the engine stalls and dies. The shifter won't even move into 1, 3, 4, 5 or R.
I got the car home and drained the fluid. It's bright red with tons of metal parts. There was no sign of it being cooked at all. Even when I was waiting for the tow truck, there was no heat in the shifter handle.
So, today's totals came to:
0 rwhp
0 rwtq
1 ctf (catastrophic transmission failure)
Maybe Friday the 13th was a bad idea after all...

Anyone have a built T56 for sale? I'm not sure how quick i can get this one rebuilt (if it can be).
Boosted_Z28 04-13-2007, 05:41 PM That's a bummer Roadie, guess it's the "weakest link" syndrome that caught up with you...could have always been worse I suppose. You'll have to re-think that Friday the 13th philosophy though. I was hoping for some dyno numbers so I would have some motivation to finish my project. Hope you get it back together soon - GOOD LUCK!
Not a good year for f-bodies this year it seems...
Like Will said tho .. better the tranny then an engine failure in any case.
Keep us posted, I wanna know when you get that thing on the dyno. I need some more setups to compare for my own project :)
Roadie 04-13-2007, 09:36 PM There's a freshly rebuilt T56 in my garage now... It's going in tonight. We start tuning end of next week. :D
Anyone need a huge paperweight?
DirtyDaveW 04-13-2007, 11:05 PM Roadie, So sorry to hear you've had some "Wilson" luck with the tranny. I was looking forward to hearing your results since I have the same Hotparts kit as you. I'm glad you found a tranny so quickly. Were you 'playing' on the way to the dyno when the tranny gave it up?
How did it feel when you were driving it?
Thanks,
David K. Wilson
Roadie 04-13-2007, 11:49 PM Nope... Just cruising along at 65mph in 6th gear (2000ish rpm, -8 to -10 psi according to the eboost2). It just let go with no warning.
Prior to this (a week ago), I had been doing a little part throttle tuning... I saw 13psi in the manifold at 3200rpm at 30% throttle according to the logs I took.
The transmission shouldn't have failed -- there was no reason for it to. I guess we can chalk it up to Friday the 13th, even though I've never been supersticious. Hell, our late model race cars are #13 with a green splash incorporated into the paint schemes and we won 6 feature races last year...

A shop about an hour away does almost all f-body work. They had 6 T56s there -- 4 LS1 and 2 LT1 (one of which was spoken for). The one I picked up had all the upgrades already installed (steel 3-4 fork, billet keys, etc). The only thing I wish it had is the viper output shaft, but I don't feel like buying a new driveshaft yoke... This failure was expensive enough.
I have a pretty sad video camera, but I'll try...

currently just an open down pipe. The sound quality of that video camera is horrible... When I take it to the shop to tune it, we're going to connect a GMMG catback to it. We'll have a real video camera up at the shop for tuning. ;)

Roadie 04-16-2007, 02:09 PM Who are you getting to tune it?
Jerry
Tim Rotter from Redline Performance in the STL area. He's tuned just about everything you can think of (blower, turbo, N/A, FAST, DFI, BS3, stock PCM, etc). He pays attention to every detail and will spend hours getting part throttle tuning absolutely perfect for street driving.
Even though my setup includes solid motor mounts, all rod-ended suspension components, and just about everything you can think of to make it not street friendly, I definitely will be driving it as a street car and getting a good tune across the board (not just WOT) is really important to me.
95 Z/28 LT1 04-16-2007, 02:21 PM I'll be interested to hear how he works out for you. Keep us posted on the driveability and part throttle tune in the future.

Roadie 04-19-2007, 10:03 AM sorry... got home around 11pm. i flat passed out when I got home last night... computer on my lap and all... I had every intention of posting...
Mike was right. We had some problems that we couldn't find yesterday. We tuned part-throttle on the street at up to 14psi without a hitch. The car went on the rollers and hit a mysterious rev limiter at 4800rpm (never took it that high on the street). 5 different attempts all stopped dead right there.
We eliminated the MSD box and the FAST rev limiter as being the cause. I stayed it it for 5 seconds after it stopped pulling on one run and it's still firing at 4800 rpm. It feels like it retarded the timing so much that it can't pull any more. We believe it's related to the inductive delay for the coils. It's set to 96 (what FAST recommends as default), but I haven't been able to find out what setting it needs to be for the northstar coil packs (delteq setup).
Anyway, the car runs and drives beautifully.I just need to fix this little rev limiter that's killing me. Then we can turn up the boost!
So, we never got the boost past 14psi, never ran it over 4800 rpm, and had a passenger side header leak (gotta replace those copper gaskets with the carbon fiber ones I have in the garage).
Here's the dyno graph:
http://www.lt1.org/turbo/dyno.gif
DirtyDaveW 04-19-2007, 10:10 AM Thanks for posting Roadie! Sorry you encountered the issue but that's damned impressive to have those numbers at 4800 rpm. So, you think the spark is being blown out by the boost?

Roadie 04-19-2007, 10:17 AM So, you think the spark is being blown out by the boost?
I doubt it... I chose a non-projected NGK plug for that reason. It's a NGK 4554 gapped at .030" with Delteq and MSD DIS-4. That should be plenty of spark for any kind of boost.
At 4800, it's still sparking because it don't drop RPM. It just goes flat there and stops increasing RPM.
Sorry to hear that you had more problems. At least you didn't break anything this time.
I suppose this thread is never going to be put to rest now :)
Roadie 04-19-2007, 11:06 AM Nah... This thread can go to rest. I'll start something new when everything actually works. ;)

PS. Yup. that was a misfire early in the run. That has been fixed... ;)
thanks for the juicy video :)
Makes me wanna get my car going even worse now thanks :p

jered, its seems to spool a little slow... especialy for a T76. What was he timing at with the dyno sheet you provided. I think those intercoolers arent helping... seems like you would only peak at 500-525rwhp if that 4800rpm run continued  Do you think that its pulling timing waybefore the 4800rpm which hurts the curve? Peak torque should have been around 3000-3500rpm, not 4500rpm. How does it pull on the street?
Jon
Roadie 04-19-2007, 11:49 AM the dyno isn't creating enough load to build boost... On the street, I could hit 14psi by 3000 rpm. On the dyno, it didn't hit 14psi until ~4300. Timing started at 30* at 2psi at 2300rpm and dropped steadily to 24* at 14psi (we were playing it safe for pump gas).
I was shooting for a perfect street tune moreso than pure dyno numbers.
DirtyDaveW 04-19-2007, 11:51 AM Are you guys getting video or just audio? When I click on the link, it downloads to my laptop, then fires up Quicktime (by default) and shows the bar moving as if it's playing but there's no sound and no visual. Then a dialog box pops up and says some important quicktime updates are needed. It provides a link to these supposed updates. Instead, it presents about 10 aftermarket codex sources with none of them indicating 'use me to play your video. I'm the one that's missing...'. I just picked one randomly, downloaded and installed it. No change on the video though. I then fired up windows media player and directed the URL to the link. Now it 'plays' audio but there's still no video.
Nah... This thread can go to rest. I'll start something new when everything actually works. ;)

Look how soft he leaves and still turns this phenomenal time/mph. This was his first pass ever with this setup. He didn't get it spooled up on the line but when boost hits. O...M...G.... This pass was 18psi on drag radials. Full street trim.

Jered, do you have datalogs? does the timing drop before it hit the 4800rpm (like down to 18 degrees or something)? Also, did it hold 14psi steady from 4300- 4800rpm?
BTW, when are you going to try and get it fixed?
will62085 04-19-2007, 12:22 PM sounds like my car on the dyno, full boost (14psi) at 4200rpm, but on the street it makes that way sooner....different problem than yours, buti blew out spark and my graph looks way different.
Similar problems at similar rpm, but look at the difference in graphs. Interesting to compare

its hard to tell from his graph...whats he at, like 12.5:1?

Haha ;) No worries Mike. Whats your paypal addy
Roadie 04-19-2007, 01:52 PM Their wideband was close to the end of the pipe and was picking up stray oxygen. Mine was reading 11.7-11.9 through the entire run.
I kept my foot on the floor for 5 seconds after it hit the mysterious rev limiter to log more info one time... RPM stayed steady at 4800. Timing stayed at 24*. It went rich and boost just dropped off. It does it even on the street, right at 4800rpm.
As I posted earlier, I'm somewhat convinced it has something to do with the dwell time of the coils (inductive delay) where the timing is falling off based on too long of a delay... Anyone have experience with this?
Roadie 04-19-2007, 02:04 PM hmm... the demo tune and manuals for the FAST classic box all have 96 uS as the inductive delay. The FAST XFI manual says:
"You should not have to change this parameter with most popular engine applications. Always start at 40 uS.
This parameter is used to compensate for the varying delays that occur with different types of crank sensors. These varying delays often cause ignition-timing error that will increase as engine RPM increases.
For inductive pickup ignition systems, leave this parameter set to 40 uS (microseconds). For other types of ignition systems, this value can be altered to reduce or eliminate ignition-timing error as a function of RPM. This error will show up as either unwanted timing advance as RPM increases or unwanted timing retard as RPM increases.
Increasing the value in this parameter will reduce unwanted timing retard.
Decreasing the value in this parameter will reduce unwanted timing advance."
So, if that 40uS is right, I should be advancing timing too much, which is definitely not what is happening. I wish I had a timing reference pointer so I could play with that setting until I had it perfect across the RPM range... I might be fabbing something up soon...
I say call FAST, you spend that kinda money i say it better work flawlessly. And if it don't they better help you like there is no tomorrow. thats my .02$

Get out of here! I'll send it bro! Fair is Fair. It aint much, but its something :)

Put it towards your next dyno run or donate it to the church.
DirtyDaveW 04-22-2007, 06:08 PM Any late/breaking news on the 4,800 RPM limiting villain?
