Rice Killer87 04-10-2007, 01:46 PM I am really excited about the new Camaro to come out and just thought about one thing.
The new mustangs have the IMPORT style AFAIC,where the whole column goes up and down like 2" instead of just the steering wheel. I F'in hate that and if GM puts them in the new Camaro I will tell you right now I WILL NOT be buying one just for that factor alone. It makes the 'stang so much harder and more of a PITA for me to drive b/c of my long arms.
Please dont screw up like they did.
EllwynX 04-11-2007, 01:02 PM I'd like to see tilt/telescoping wheel.
Currently on my Aveo I sit all the way back. The legroom is fine; perfect at that point actually. But my arms are pretty far from the steering wheel.
Bayer-Z28 04-22-2007, 01:55 AM IMO, I can't STAND that whole column up and down thing. I'd rather the type they have now. The bottom half of the steering column could get in the way of my knees. (I'm tall @ 6'3")
I just hope they don't make the wheel itself too big. My 2000 could use a slightly smaller wheel. The top half blocks some of the road, the left most view out of the windshield. -The centerlines or the edge lines. The wheel should not obstruct the view of the road.
fastball 04-22-2007, 08:09 AM Most likely it will be the whole column tilting. They will have a telescopic feature as well, and the only way to make a tilt/telescopic wheel with an airbag is to make the whole column adjust. Keep in mind, the old "tilt wheel" that your 4th gen and older Camaros have is old GM. That's all going away. I prefer having an infinite range anyway, instead of 6 preset notches.
I think it's quite shallow for anyone to refuse to buy a great car simply because they don't like the new tilt column design. Try it, I'm sure once you get used to it, you'll wonder what you liked about the old design to begin with.
Big Als Z 04-24-2007, 01:24 PM I have colum tilt and telescoping wheel, as well as adjustable pedals and 6 way power seat....if you cant get comfortable with one of these variations, then I dont know what to tell you.
I get in my 72, and there are no adjustments...my seat is already as far back as it can go.

How do you know its great? Its not even out yet.
My gf has an 05 stang and I do A LOT of racing stripes on BRAND NEW ones almost weekly,so Ive been driving them quit a bit and I still cant do it. Evidently you dont have long arms like me,thats what makes it uncomfortable for me no matter HOW its adjusted. Even w/ the damn thing all the way down,it still feels like im driving a SCHOOL BUS. The steering wheel sits too high and blocks too much of my vision which is another reason I cant stand it. I have to drive w/ my hands either at 10 and 2 like an old fart (still in my line of sight) or hold at 9 and 3 or even lower just so I can see where im going.
I could care less about a telescoping column, thats why the F'ing seat moves forward and backward.
bombebomb 04-24-2007, 11:27 PM i like it the way it is now, hopefully its the same.
EllwynX 04-25-2007, 12:12 AM I could care less about a telescoping column, thats why the F'ing seat moves forward and backward.
So when you have the seat set perfect for your legs/feet to reach the pedals, but the steering wheel is either a bit too close or too far... You don't see that as a reason to have a telescoping steering wheel?
The seats movement is for the comfort of your legs, telescoping wheel is for the arms.
I for one hope the telescoping wheel becomes more standard in all cars.
fastball 04-25-2007, 09:23 AM How do you know its great? Its not even out yet.
Because the style of tilt/telescope design that will be in the Camaro is the same thats been in every European car for 20 years and that's in most Japanese cars now. I've driven Hondas and Lexus' with it. My Prelude has a tilt column without the telescope, and I like it much more than the archaic tilt design from GM of old. There aren't stupid notches that limit where your wheel goes - it's perfectly adjustable to where you like it exactly.
Go drive a 3-series, Accord, Acura TL, or Lexus IS250. You'll understand why Japan and Germany have been getting glowing reviews for years for ergonomics and the ability for any driver to fit the seat, wheel, and mirrors to the perfect position, while GM has always gotten bad reviews.
It's about time they got with modern ergonomic interior design.
blckbrd84 04-26-2007, 10:28 AM I hope it uses one similar to the GTO's. I love the fact that I can move the GTO so it's at the perfect height to not rub my legs yet it's low and sits straight. I hate the old style in my WS.6 as to get it to not rub my legs I have to have it tilted up slightly where it doesn't sit straight.
Plus with the telescope ala GTO it's so much easier to get it so you can see and yet you can comfortably reach it even with the seat back far.

I havent driven a GTO so I wasnt aware that they had a new style tilt column...sounds like exactly what I need, hopefully they build it w/ this.
GTOJack 08-25-2007, 11:55 AM The only way I'll be able to fit in a new Camaro is with a tilt/telescopic steering wheel. Otherwise, my beer belly will be in way. I fit OK in my past 04 and 05 GTOs. Hopefully, GM will use the same system in the new Camaro.
90 Z28SS 10-19-2007, 04:29 PM Wait for the G8's to get here . Whatever it has , is a sure bet the Maro will have the same thing . All Zeta's should pretty much share the same steering column in different trim levels . Which means , the column should be very GTO like , as the G8's does tilt and telescope .
97QuasarBlue3.8 10-22-2007, 11:27 AM What are you, 3' tall? A midget?
At almost 6'5" the Mustang is one of the few cars where the seat, if pushed all the way back, is TOO FAR back for me. I have to have the seat up a couple of clicks up in my GTI too, or else I can barely push the clutch in all the way. The tilt/telescope wheel is the greatest invention for tall people...We can have the seat back and have the wheel come with us, or stay far away if our arms are really long.
The 4th gen was a damn nightmare for ergonomics and safety...roofline too close to a tall person's head, dashboard too close to the knees, steering wheel (when tilted down) had the airbag aimed at a person's belly--not good--or at a person's face if they needed to tilt it up for leg room--also not good. The 6-way seats were its only saving grace...I could gangster lean just enough to be far enough away from the roofline and steering wheel and still manage to be comfortable.
I fail to see how greater adjustability is bad...

+1. I would be very disappointed if it didn't come with a tilt/telescope (I am 6'2" with long legs and my knees/legs always seem to hit the bottom of steering wheels).

You're a fair bit taller than me (I'm 6'). But I found my '02 Camaro to be the most comfortable vehicle I've ever had. The seats went back far enough that I could reach both the steering wheel and pedals comfortably (it actually went a little TOO far back, which is rare for me).

What,you cant read?
If you had read all of what I said,it was the steering wheel didnt come down far enough for my liking....I said nothing about the seat not going back far enough. In order to get it how I like it in the stang I have to raise the seat up where my head is close to the roof of the car which I dont like either.
Oh yea,and im about 5"10.

I am with you, I cannot stand that type of set up. I have been in a new gto and it suked. On top of that since it was a forieng car they mount the hole thing way to high, which is one of my concerns on the camaro. The 4th genn f-body has the perfect set up for me.
