BTW frank how pink was the fluid when you tore into it ?
mdacton 03-18-2007, 10:04 PM I have seen frank post before about the release spings...that probly has something to do with the burnt clutches and piston. I didn't see anything on the pump.....not really sure what angle it was...
The 60E really isn't so simple as people think...Frank knows all the tricks of the trade to make it hold up

Youre second sentence is getting warm :) Thats why i chose frank to do my tranny :) I researched for 2 years on finding the best person to build my
4L60E and frank has DEFINATELY surpassed all my expectations :D :thumb:
Vince @ FLT 03-18-2007, 10:20 PM The first problem is a broken aluminum forward clutch piston. The second problem is that it has a pwm style pump in a 94 transmission. Do I get 2 cookies?

Why would a small shop do something like that when it is so obvious? Is it just b/c they don't know....wouldn't it be well known didn't they use the same trans in the trucks and vans, so it should be a well known fact I would think

I was curious cuz i changed the fluid and filter every weekend for a year .
I did this so it would shift somewhat okay till i could afford your Trans
build :o
matLT1 03-19-2007, 10:39 PM Do you have any plans of holding this other tranny shop liable for bending you over?!?!?!

How much did that "rebuild" cost? At least you recouped some of your money back.

the first sign that he probably was messing you over was he has an attorney. But Just think of how many other times he may have been sued for doing the exact same thing.

2000GTP 03-20-2007, 04:34 PM 4000 grand:eek: That is horrible. Anyway you can report him to the BBB or something? I know it won't make a difference to you, but it might help some other unsuspecting people.

lefty 03-20-2007, 07:09 PM Whats a pwm style pump and why is it bad for our cars?
12SCNDZ 03-20-2007, 07:51 PM Whats a pwm style pump and why is it bad for our cars?
PWM stands for Pulse Width Modulated. In 1995 GM changed the lock-up strategy in the 4L60E. In '93-'94, the converter clutch applied through a simple on/off strategy. In '95, it changed to a pulse apply. This simply means that the clutch applied gradually, instead of all at once. To make this change, the pump, wiring, and seperator plate. An extra solenoid (PWM) was added to the valve body. Although the valve body castings are identical, there were changes made to the TCC apply valve.
A PWM pump uses a different design than an older pump. Mismatching the 2 will cause some serious lock-up issues.

lefty 03-21-2007, 06:20 AM so since he had a 94 transmission it was the wrong pump but if he had a 95 or newer it would be ok? Is there a date code on transmissions to tell what year you have?

Yes that is correct that the pumps changed in 95 to the pwm style along with the separator plate and the internal wiring harness. Here is a picture to look for the transmission code on the early cases and the second picture is for the later cases. Vince

And this is the later case location. 98 and later for the fbody. This code is not from a fbody. 8FFD would be the correct code.
