Rear ends whining

The rear end sounds like it whining to me so a few questions

How can I check to make sure it is the rear end and that something is wrong?

What does the whining actually mean has gone wrong with the rear?

How much time do i got?

Where can I get a rebuild kit for it?

How much would a shop charge?

gears typically whine after a while, especially aftermarket gears.

After the gears become worn they whine as they spin, its common.

How much time do i got?
Could be a day, could be never. Some people ignore the whine and are fine, others have their gears brake. Depends on how you drive the car. If it's never seen a track and is driven decent you are probably fine.

Where can I get a rebuild kit for it?
JEG'S, Summit, and other car part sellers have rebuild kits. When the gears whine, though, it's usually the gears and a rebuild kit won't help.

How much would a shop charge?
Around a couple hundred, without the part costs.


Getting new gears probably won't fix the whine unless they are stock sized gears. If you go with 3.73 or 4.10 there is a chance they will whine, usually depends on the brand.

Its just the stock rear end with the stock 3.23's in it. The rear has 125k on it and the pinion seal was just done about 2 months ago, would that have anything to do with it?

I assume if the pinion seal was recently done that means the old seal was leaking. Chances are the oil level got too low and the pinion bearing might of been damaged. When my pinion bearing went out in my other car I went to the junkyard and picked up a used differential cheap. Not sure how loud the whine is but usually a pinion bearing going bad gets louder and the whine increases in pitch as speed increases.

Could also be an axle bearing but I'd go with pinion bearing.

Yeah, it seems to get louder/more high pitched as speed increases.




I dont race or beat on my car, just use it for daily driver duties right now, so what would be a good course of action?

My guess is when your seal was done the nut didn't get set correctly on the pinion flange. When you have this fixed IMO don't take it to the same place.
