Planning to do gears in a few month. Right now, I have 2.73s with Series 2 carrier...thinking about changing out the posi as well to Series 3. Is the Series 3 carrier a "drop in" replacement for the Series 2.

Yes, I now I have to get the "thinner" ring gear for the Series 3, but I'm wondering if anything else I would need to replace inside the rear end.

Or could I just buy Series 3 carrier, 3.73s for Series 3, and install kit, and that's all?

Yes, but why? If you want 3.73's, just buy them for a 2-series carrier and be done :thumb:. Why waste the money on a carrier that is, for all intents and purposes, "identical" to the one you've already got? (unless your current one is broke or something?! )

Save the few hundred bucks a new carrier will cost you, and use that money towards a 12-bolt one day, if you ever need one ;).

I was told Series 3 is stronger then Series 2...is that true? Current posi is fine, just thinking that if I'm already in there, upgrade the posi. If not really an upgrade, then I'll wait for the entire assembly to fail to go to a 12 bolt.

Who ever told you that does not know what they are talking about. The difference in carriers goes by what gears can fit on them, and means nothing of strength. What can be put in one carrier can also be put into another. 2 and 3 series are the same as far as strength goes.

Exactly! The ONLY "difference" is the position of the mounting face/flange where the ring gear bolts on, which is offset by ~1/4" depending on the thickness of gears it's intended for.
