AZ2ENVY 02-28-2007, 06:13 AM Me and the fiancee are flying out to detroit the 2nd week
of july . We booked a hotel in Farmington hills and got a rental
car booked also :) We are going out there to scope a place to live
(looking around troy area) . We need some help to be shown where
the cruise/racing spots are at . Also just some guidance so we
know what we are getting ourselves into (housing areas) . Would
anyone be willing to help us out and maybe show us the ropes ?
No help goes unpaid :) Thanks in advance .
We are flying out in july to scope out a place to live and have fun .
Planning on moving out a few months after we visit .
We are both into the F-Body scene and car scene quite a bit :)
Mighty 02-28-2007, 07:37 AM So, wait. You're moving to Michigan?
I live too far north of Detroit to be of any help, except that I can tell you that the Woodward Dream Cruise is huge every year.
JakeRobb 02-28-2007, 08:21 AM the Woodward Dream Cruise is huge every year.
It is, indeed. Too huge, IMO. There are better shows, and better cruises. If you drive in the cruise, you don't get to see as many cars as if you just get a spot on the road to sit. But, either way, you're going to see 20,000 Chevelles, 25,000 Camaros, 40,000 Mustangs, 10,000 Corvettes, two Ferraris, and not more than a dozen of anything else. To be honest, it's kinda boring. Let me know once you've moved up here and I'll show you some real car shows, where you actually get a chance to see some variety, look under some hoods, and talk to the owners of some truly fast street cars.
I'd volunteer, but I live in the Lansing area and don't know the Detroit area all that well. Farmington Hills and Troy are very nice areas, and you'll pay for it.
Paging Jason Debler, Jason Debler, please report to the lounge. :)
robvas 02-28-2007, 08:23 AM It's a mistake to sit in traffic at Woodward. You have to walk around. I've always had a great time when I go, and see tons of stuff. Sure, there's a million Camaros and Mustangs but there's tons of other cars and plenty of stuff you've never seen before and won't see again.
TSheaZ28 02-28-2007, 09:47 AM Milan Dragway always have stuff going on in the summer, so you can't really miss out there. It's about an hour SW of Detroit.
RedIrocZ-28 02-28-2007, 10:38 AM Just curious, why would you be moving TO Michigan, and especially to the Detroit side of the state?

My guess would be that he got a new job.

There are three openings for Java programmers where I work, plus we're starting up an internship program. We have been interviewing like mad and haven't found a single good applicant. Well, there was one guy, but he ended up taking a different job.
Anyone know any good developers looking for work?

Anyone know any good developers looking for work? Our biggest problem is the loss of manufacturing jobs.
I work in a factory and we're doing okay, but we aren't doing great. I'm sitting on an electronics degree, but I'm too lazy to drive for a job. Right now, I live a mile away. I guess getting laid off (which is very possible with the way the economy is going), would be the kick in the pants I need.
valu8or1 02-28-2007, 11:10 AM It is the right time to move here if you can get a job. Houses are getting cheaper by the month and people are just giving the bank the keys, instead of selling the house.
As long as you can weather the recession/depression going on in the Detroit area for the next 3-5 years you should do pretty well. House values are down and foreclosures are up in record numbers right now.
Don't plan on making any friends with your neighbors though, as they will all be moving to states that actually have a decent economy and a plan for jobs. Good luck if you do actually move here.
PhantomTA 02-28-2007, 12:26 PM Not a problem. Myself, Fezza and everyone will be no more than 30 mins from you. We got you covered.

Where would that be ? I want to be in a place where i dont have
to worry so much about my Camaro getting destroyed, broken into,
stolen, etc :( And a better place to live where i dont have to drive
too far to be in the car scene/cruises and stuff :D
slowdrive 02-28-2007, 04:13 PM We have been up there several times for the Dream Cruise.....always stayed in Troy and really liked the area but the roads in and around Detroit (except for Woodward Ave) will tear your car a new one.

In general, for southern Michigan, the further west you go, the less crime you'll find. Detroit and Flint have relatively high crime. Troy is in the Detroit metropolitan area (~15 miles NNW).
Are you getting a job up here? Where is it? How much time are you willing to spend commuting each day? Is a 40-minute commute on open roads more favorable to you than a 20-minute stint in a traffic jam?
Tell us as much as you can about your needs, and we'll help you meet them. :)

Troy is a very nice area, but traffic is horrible in the morning and evening there.
Let me know what stores your looking to transfer to, and I can recommend some places to look at to live. (Troy and Sterling Heights are usually in the top 5 safest cities in the US) :)

i'm sorry to hear your moving to michigan though... the worst economic state in the country people can't wait to get out.

I was just using troy as a general area . What are some areas that
you would suggest ?
ur2slow 03-01-2007, 07:02 PM Troy is a very nice area, but can be a little high in price both for the house and Taxes. It seems like you could live with in a 60 mile radius of Detroit and only be 20 minutes from a Best Buy. :D I guess it would all depend on your price range and what type of house you are looking for, as to what would be a good area. Livonia has some very nice areas and can range from inexpensive to very high priced. It is also a good central location. Do you have any kids? That would make a difference as well depending on the school district you would want.
I sent you a P.M.

Farmington is a decent area, although I would go to Farmington Hills if you can swing it...or Northville for that matter. Crime isn't as bad as the West Michiganders seem to think it is...there just arent any people living over there, so they don't know how to deal with this many people:lol: There are hundreds of f-bod guys in S.E. Mich, i'm sure some of us will be able to show you around.

97SS0594 03-02-2007, 08:32 AM yeah, farmington hills is a nice place, my GF's sister and brother and law have an apartment there, its prety nice too!
AlohaBR 03-04-2007, 06:25 PM I grew up in Farmington Hills, work in Hazel Park. Would be glad to help out also.
Red89GTA 03-06-2007, 11:00 PM There is a Best Buy in Novi too, Novi's the next city west of Farmington Hills. Very nice, not as expensive as troy I think, but not the cheapest at all. Most people around here know it for the big/nice mall. It also has 3 major highways intersecting right here. The roads are also better than a lot of other metro detroit areas. The biggest down side for Novi is that all the cruises/shops/get to gethers are at least 30 mins east it seems like.
To be fair on the road thing, they do seem to be fixing a lot of the worst ones, so things are getting better.
Also, its definatly a buyer's housing market. Just wish I made enough to buy one.
Mogulskierk2 03-07-2007, 05:58 AM Novi . It also has 3 major highways intersecting right here.

Rush hour SUX in the whole Tri-county area. Really depends on where he winds up working and go from there.
ur2slow 03-08-2007, 07:39 AM www.realtor.com is a good sight to look at houses with out having to talk to a realtor rate away. You can even get directions to most of the houses and drive by to check out the area.

Most realty companies provide that service. Their sites are just interfaces to the same database you can get to via realtor.com. Personally, I've found that realtor.com has the best searching tools hooked up to the database. :)
AZ2ENVY 04-01-2007, 07:03 PM We found some places in the cities .... Walled lake , Farmington ,
Ypsilanti , Southfield , Inkster , Taylor, and Fenton . Its gonna cost
us around this much to move up there .....
Budget rental with car carrier - about $1000
Ship my saturn by semi to MI - around $500-$600
Gas between the girls Camaro and
rental truck we are estimating - around $600-$700 at most
Deposit and 1st months rent - Around $1000 at most
Does this sound about right ? Any tips are appreciated as well :)
JakeRobb 04-01-2007, 07:16 PM If your credit is reasonably good (let's say 700+), you shouldn't have to make a security deposit... at least, I didn't have to put any money down in either of the apartments I lived in before we bought our house.
My in-law's live just outside of Fenton (i.e. 50 feet away from the city limits). It's a really nice place to live. Keep us posted on what you decide!

ROADRAGE 04-03-2007, 04:24 AM Probably so we know what is best for you. Traffic can be a real bitch around here. You dont want to live far away from work..unless you are going against the flow of rush 4hour traffic(which seems to flow both ways somehow).

redvette93 04-03-2007, 01:14 PM you don't want to live in dearborn unless you're from the middle east. I would figure out what store you're going to be working at then look for a place to live. Also since you won't be working typical 8-5 hours I wouldn't worry about commute time although Troy's traffic lights are the worst times lights in the area.

I am sure Davidson has one of the SMALLEST concentrations of Arabs...Dearborn is the one that is a very arab community..VERY.
Red89GTA 04-03-2007, 11:57 PM Depending where you end up working, add Novi, Northville and South Lyon. There's a Best Buy in Novi (on border w/ Farmington/Livonia/Northville). Novi/northville are very nice areas, but a little spendy, south lyon is the next town west of Novi, still small, but growing pretty fast.
triumph 04-04-2007, 07:37 AM Actually just out side chicago has the largest population besides the middle east, east dearborn has the second largest.I live in west dearborn the arabs are in the east side of town. But they are all over.Hell i bet they even own a gas station or party store in davison. Steven
A2GrLT1 04-10-2007, 11:19 AM You should also check out Ann Arbor. They have one of the largest Best Buy's in the country in the Ann Arbor/Saline area. I have grown up in Ann Arbor and still live in Ann Arbor. Very nice city.
CLOKWRK 04-10-2007, 01:47 PM You could also add St. Claire Shores, pretty reasonable rates. It's near Lake St. Claire and there is a Best Buy in Roseville...about 5 minutes. There are some nice restaurants/hang-outs on Jefferson in the Shores. I'm an Eastsider though so my views might be a little biased.
