formula79 11-22-2002, 12:39 PM According to rumors going on. In reality the name will die and Pontiac with a new name of whatever the Rendevous replacement is...likely VUE based (instead of a bastardized minivan platform) . the Rendevous has definatly shown GM there is a market for this kinda vehicle...but after forcasting Aztek sales in around 70,000 the SUV has never topped 25,000 in sales.
Captain Jeff Z28 11-22-2002, 12:43 PM I simply can't wait to see what everyone has to say about this.:)
Provided it's true, of course.

bigsteve7 11-22-2002, 12:45 PM Awww, the Aztek's gonna die? :(
Rejoice! :) They should never have released that thing. I thought when it came out ithat it would be headed for the chopping block in a short time.
Darth Xed 11-22-2002, 12:46 PM I think it is a good idea... Aztek has been the butte of jokes since it came out.
If you are gonna re-do a next Gen, might as well throw a fresh nameplate on it and get rid of the stigma.
97z28/m6 11-22-2002, 12:57 PM good!:D
jrp4uc 11-22-2002, 01:01 PM It's going to die, or go on hiatus?

LOL! Good one! :D
Chuck! 11-22-2002, 01:24 PM NOOOOOOOOO!! I graduate in 2005 and I want an Aztek! Man maybe I'll buy two used ones instead of one new one...
Meccadeth 11-22-2002, 01:25 PM 3 more years with that sh*t!? ;)
IREngineer 11-22-2002, 01:56 PM There are no concrete plans to produce a Pontiac variant of the Vue as of this moment . The Chevy Equinox is still on task to launch MY04, but as of now no projected volumes have been added for a Pontiac. My plant makes the cooling module (radiator, condenser, fan, etc) for the VUE. The weird thing is, the rep that was in our plant to check everything out was supposedly with CAMI. Maybe the Equinox will be built there???
centric 11-22-2002, 02:01 PM Wow! Only 4 years too late!
SuperDave479 11-22-2002, 02:06 PM Thank God. I was feeling really pissed about the Asstek living on and the F-Body dying. That makes me feel a little better.

I was only speculating...with how well the Renevous sells..it's not going no where..and I am pretty sure will continue to get its varient.
PacerX 11-22-2002, 03:15 PM Can't speak to the rumors, but I can tell you this:
Source - Automotove News (November 11, 2002)
Aztek production has gone up by a factor of nearly 3 from last year through November 1st, and have continually trended upwards since the introduction of the vehicle.
Through November 1st last year, a total of 13,896 Azteks were produced. Through November 1st this year, a total of 33,711 Azteks were produced. Only 23,572 Camaros were produced from January 1st to November 1st 2001, and 23,012 from January 1st 2002 to November 1st 2002.
So, there's the bad news, and a stinging indictment of the Camaro I love so much... ugly or not, the 2002 Aztek is going to outsell the Camaro for calendar 2002, and will also exceed Camaro's 2001 sales numbers.
Aztek sales will exceed 25,000 units this year by a fair margin (at least 8,000 units).
If you combine Rendezvous and Aztek volumes you get roughly 100,000 units this year - which would have been more than enough to keep Camaro and Firebird alive.
Other interesting notes....
GM produced a total of 2,734,242 trucks through November 1st in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Ford produced a total of 2,382,237 trucks through November 1st in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Chevrolet Silverados outsell Toyota Tundras by a factor of 10. That's TEN TIMES.

It's already been confirmed that Equinox will be built at CAMI.

My guess is that the public is warming up to the Aztek - sales will probably still be growing when they kill it. I though that the first-model year was excruciatingly ugly - in every color except for black. Now, I actually have to admit that the Aztec is actually better looking that the Vibe/Matrix duo.
Not that I'd ever buy one...

I think the same thing is happening with the Vibe. Maybe it's because they don't have the "Would what you do w/Pontiac for a day" ad campaign anymore. Those homemade commercials didn't improve my perception of any of the featured Pontiacs. Or maybe it's because I stopped seeing them in cheddar cheese yellow... Whatever the case, they're not as bad as they used to be.
Not that I'd ever buy one. ;)
I thought for sure that GM would make it into a great vehicle - then kill it.
Z284ever 11-23-2002, 12:57 AM I think that I must have aclimated to the Aztek.....I no longer become voilently disturbed when I see one.
Pandamonkey 11-23-2002, 12:18 PM Not Soon Enough!
ckt101 11-23-2002, 02:45 PM Not to worry, the aztek will live on for decades in jokes. :D
I thought the aztek might be ugly at first, but the more I see of it, the more I'm certain that it really is ugly. This is the gremlin of the new millenium.

In terms of styling, this is a real race to the outhouse. At very least, the Aztec has "novelty," with its rediculous swept-back tailgate. On the other hand, the Vibe is little more than another Japanese "high-car," the sort of stumpy people mover that normally doesn't make it to these shores.
INTENSS 11-24-2002, 11:23 AM I have a question.
Those of you that are bashing the Aztek, have any of you actually gotten inside of one and driven it?
It might be hard to look at from some angles, but it is a pretty good vehicle for what it is, what it is priced at, and comes with.
I was like most people, thought it was fugly as hell. Well...then my dad bought one. He came down to Florida with it. He loved the ride...the cargo capacity and the amenities. The interior is well laid out. His response to the exterior looks: "When you're the one driving it, your view isn't on the outside, but rather what it looks like inside."
Interesting...
(BTW - he also owns a 96 T/A WS6, and a 65 Tempest in case you assume he's got bad taste.) :D

I have heard that the interior is nice and very well thought out and all. But I'm one of those that demands that the car I drive looks halfway decent inside and out. I couldn't bring myself to drive something that rediculous. I'd much prefer the Rendezvous, which isn't a great looker on the outside either but does offer more pleasant styling with a similar interior.

No one has ever complained about the inside of Aztek, and infact, I even like the interior. But that doesn't mean you can easily ignore the exterior styling.
As for the Vibe, I think it's currently the best looking mini station wagon on the road. It's definately different, and though it has some of Aztek's styling cues, it comes off looking light years better. As far as I'm concerned, Pontiac can discontinue Aztek, and just make Vibes as their crossover vehicle. If I needed a vehicle like that, it would get my vote.
BTW: Pontiac is also discontinuing the Sunfire, and Bonneville the same year.
97z28/m6 11-24-2002, 02:40 PM wait no asstek no sunfire and no bonnie what is pontiac going to sell?
