69gto96z 02-24-2007, 01:13 AM When i hit the nitrous, it switches on at 3200 rpm, it runs fine but once it hits about 4200 rpm it starts popping and shooting out black smoke. My friend thinks its electrical, and I am starting to think so to. It almost seems to me that its not getting enough spark to burn all the extra fuel/nitrous at that high of a RPM. I have TR6's gapped at .035. I'm gonna yank em out when I get a chance and check the gap on em. Anyone else think it might be electrical related? Also, I have a mallory 685 box with Taylor OTVC wires on the car.
Black95Form 02-24-2007, 03:40 PM Sounds like detonation. How is your fuel pressure? What size of shot?
69gto96z 02-24-2007, 06:28 PM Well, figured it out. Fuel pressure was going up and down and making the FPSS turn the nitrous on and off. Shot it with the nozzle spraying into a towel, and it was pulsing. Did it with the FPSS bypassed, and a nice steady stream came out. Looks like its time for a new fuel pump.
Daniel6718 02-24-2007, 06:46 PM yep, your welcome, now buy my racetronix kit
69gto96z 02-25-2007, 02:05 PM Hahaha yeah, I hopefully will. I will let you know friday whats going on with it.
OBE1 95Z28 02-26-2007, 10:56 AM Also a good idea to invest in a fuel pressure gauge for the cockpit; running lean is a good way to blow up your engine.
Daniel6718 02-26-2007, 12:59 PM yep, luckily he has a fpss...sved his motor!
69gto96z 02-26-2007, 05:19 PM Yeah I am glad I invested in the FPSS. A fuel pressure gauge, nitrous pressure gauge, and a wideband are all coming this summer though :)
Nitro Dave 02-27-2007, 12:35 AM If your fuel pressure is not droping you may just need to adjust the FPSS.
You will need to watch the fuel pressure with a gauge.
Dave
69gto96z 02-27-2007, 12:40 AM I am pretty sure it is fluctuating up and down. When we tested it with the FPSS hooked up, it wouldnt give a nice steady flow. With it bypassed, the flow was as smooth as could be.
Nitro Dave 02-27-2007, 12:54 AM The FPSS is adjustable. It is normal for the fuel pressure to drop a few lbs when the nitrous hits. If the perimeters are so cloes that the fuel pressure flutter is right at what the FPSS is adjusted at it will shut off and on like you are explaining. The correct way to check this is to put a fuel pressure gauge on it and make sure the fuel pressure is not having a big drop. If the fuel pressure is OK adjust the FPSS as needed.

Daniel6718 02-27-2007, 01:21 AM well its preset at 35, when he goes full throttle he should be at 47, when the n20 hits its dropping 12 psi? seems like alot...
69gto96z 02-27-2007, 09:06 AM Im just gonna stay on the safe side and leave the fpss set where it is and get a racetronix set-up.

Yes they are suppose to be preset at 35psi. However I have needed to adjust quite a few of them during installs. The only way to know for sure is to watch the fuel pressure with a gauge.

You can not go wrong with the racetronix kit. It is a good investment.

Well said. I just bought one last week along with a few gauges to monitor the juiceage. FPSS saved my motor last year aswell
MEAN LT1 02-27-2007, 09:18 PM A booster pump will work as well to help fuel pressure from dropping so rapidly. Although this is a "bandaid" but it does work and has worked for a long time.
