Victory Racing 11-22-2002, 04:23 AM I weighed my car a few months ago and it was 3420 without me, and I weigh about 225lbs.
The car still have both bumper supports, factory k-member, heater core and AC compressor (dash is coming out this winter), and even has both stock sway bars on it.
The goal is to get the car to weigh 3200lbs by itself. It is a 97 SS with leather, power, and T-tops. Do you think its possible? I'm sure it is, just wondering what other things you guys might go for?
I am thinking of going with a small Dynabat battery, and taking off the door skins to remove the inner support structure.
Any of the big ones I am missing? I am working on seats, well seat. Not sure what to do there yet, thinking Kirkey's.
383 Blwn Bird 11-22-2002, 05:55 AM Hey there....!, Your plans are the same as mine! As soon as I bring the car home from APE I'm tearing out the dash all of the HAVAC stuff vents everything. The carpet will be replaced with lighter weight carpet all the sound deadener is going byb-bye. I'm also doing the Kirkey seats, trimming the wiring harness Bumper supports, AC, Power steering,K-member, A-arms, Brakes, All the factory glass, and some other stuff! I'm trying to off set some of the weight gained from the new 9inch, Th400, and the full cage. Hope your car turns out like you want it.
Maybe all see you out at the track next year.
Kevin (redfirebird)
kcsoz20 11-22-2002, 06:41 AM Car weighs 3450 with 1/2 tank of gas. No weight reductions except removal of jack and spare.
Ken
Shon Herron 11-22-2002, 08:59 AM Best run of 12.27 was 3395
Subsequent runs 3450.
I hope to stay in the 3500 range in 03.
big dave 11-22-2002, 11:37 AM My raceweight is around 3640. I'm really not that willing to gut the car in search of a couple tenths. I can understand if I were going for some kind of record where every ounce counts but I'm too far away from being one of the fast cars to even consider it. I've removed the front swaybar, spare tire, tried skinnies, and removed the passenger seat on a couple occasions in search of that elusive 11 sec timeslip . Other than that, the car is a fully loaded t-topped Z.
RacinLT1 11-22-2002, 12:04 PM 3350 without me,9" rear,no ac/ps (still have the power rack),no front swaybar,1/2 tank of gas and a full bottle.
Car also has Jaz race buckets,8 pt Chromoly rollbar, replaced stock carpet with aftermarket and no sound deadening. Welds all 4 corners.Car still has both bumpers/supports.
97 T Top TA,power windows etc.
This year i am hoping to go tubular K member/manual rack, and maybe some other simple things.
Race weight is 3590 when my fatass in it.
Mine weights 3540 with me in it and I weight 230. It has a 8 point bar, full carpet, t- tops, and stock k-member. I've removed the ac, seats and front swaybar.
Randy
rskrause 11-22-2002, 08:09 PM Mine is ~3,900lbs (>4,100 with me on-board). that's why even with >700rwhp it's not in the 9's!
I guess I just need more hp ;)

yellow Z28 11-23-2002, 01:24 AM just under 3500 with me in it
Brady 11-23-2002, 02:13 AM Mine weighed 3640 with me and 5 gallons of gas in it. :(
I don't know where to cut more weight.. This turbo crap is HEAVY
No A/C
No Power Steering
Tubular K-member
Tubular A-Arms
No front bumper support
No Driver side airbag
No front swaybar
No back seats
Stock carpet
stock (formula) front seats
wolfe 6-point bar (soon to be 10)
9" rear
TH400
I need ideas to drop about 200#, and I can get radical :D
TA Jack 11-23-2002, 03:40 AM passenger side air bag and bracket is massive. You can then sell the pair of bags for about $500 to help you pay for your lightweight all aluminum brakes like Steve Quinn has. I think they are Wildwoods.
Get rid of power windows, locks, wiper motor and side impact bars in the doors and save about 60 lbs.
Then its time to really get radical and take the subs out along with stock speakers and stereo.:)
sideways_Into_3rd 11-23-2002, 06:24 AM im at 3520 with me in it .. i weigh 160
just light wheels .. no front sway bar .. 1 cloth seat ... thats about it .. i guess the 12 bolt and the mcleod weight a lot more than stock parts
im thinking next year .. with an 8 pt cage and a 5 pt harness i wont really need airbags ;)
what do both airbags weight and how much can i get for them !?? and i wont break my face if i get in an accident :D

That weight was without the subs :) but I'm always going to have a radio. I'm going to pull the passenger side airbag out when we finish the cage.. lightweight brakes would be sweet. I have to have functional windows (No A/C and living in Alabama), I heard that manual windows weighed about the same as power windows? thoughts? Getting rid of the side impact bars is a good one!
...must....go....to....bed......
My Firebird weighs 3320 with me in it and my Camaro weighs 3275 with me in it (It even has steel heads and hood!). Both are legal Stock Eliminator cars.
Best Regards,
Daren
sfGi8nt 11-23-2002, 02:11 PM I weighed mine at 3360lbs. I weigh 140 (Im'ma skinny lil facker ain't I? :D ) so my race weight is EXACTLY 3500lbs :)
That was with the spare tire, jack, and all. How much do those weigh anyways...there out of the car now :)
Times & weight in .sig--weight includes me (~160).
3590 with myself and a FULL tank of gas.
Injuneer 11-23-2002, 08:03 PM Damn!!!! My Formula t-top must have lead bars hidden in it somewhere. Last year it was 3,760# with me (185#) on the scale at Englishtown. No A/C, Welds, skinnies, no jack/spare, etc.
Didn't weigh it this year, but I added the Gear Vendor, and tried to offset the weight gain by deleting the front sway bar, AIR system, cruise control, replace stock steering wheel/air bag with cheapie Grant wheel, Corbeau Forza in place of stock cloth non-power driver seat.
Several people have questioned the scale at Englishtown, but that was right after it had been certified for the Matco Tools Nationals. 3,760# sounds ridiculous for a coupe
RacinLT1 11-24-2002, 04:04 PM Fred, the weight i listed was from Englishtown, and that was from the Magazine shootout.
I went to cecil few weeks later and the weights were within 20-25 lbs.......although i dont remember if i had the bottle in it at Etown.
TheBlur 11-25-2002, 12:50 AM Hey man how do you take out the airbags? I would kill to make 500 from them. Help me out

Yeah I agree. Unless somebody is a criminal selling them to chop shops, is there really a place that will buy air bags???

ElkyRacer 11-27-2002, 01:22 PM I finnally weighed mine this past weekend. With all factory options but t-tops and leather. Stock wheels, swaybar in place, all seats in, spare tire and jack removed but replaced with 33lbs worth of bottle and nitrous, ;) with a TH400 and a 9in. The car weighed in at 3600 with my 140lb butt in it. Also had a half o tank o gas. Last time I was at the track, with the swaybar removed, stock tranny and rear, and no seats, it was 3400 with me in it. Hopefully some draglights will help me pull SOME of the weight that the 9in and TH400 added on.
Kyle
Grease 11-27-2002, 06:03 PM 3430lbs without me in the car. 1/4 tank of gas. No weight reduction but a heavy Spohn HD torque arm
LTOne4Fun 11-27-2002, 10:24 PM 3570 with just spare removed 1/4 gas. i weigh 135.
chevyguy3 11-28-2002, 09:45 PM 3240lbs without me(180lbs), totally full tank of gas. 56.2% on the front axle . i have a full interior minus the back seats. should be 100lbs lighter by spring hopefully, with most of that coming off the nose
zturbo 11-28-2002, 11:46 PM my car will be 3200-3250 after final mods :D
been weighing the parts out and it all is getting where i want it. Brady might take a look at some boat carpet :D that stuff is light and looks nice where our factory sound deadened carpet is super heavy
There is a pad under the carpet by the fuel tank hump that weighs alot as well. It is all the little things that add up. I will be doing the electric harness in the car as that is supposed to be a wopping 75 lbs dropped  I will only race with one seat in the car as well (corbeau) but my cage does add alot of weight. I just watch what alot of the ls1 guys take out and think if i really need it or not :).
I was amazed how much the factory brakes weighed versus the aerospace brakes. (went all the way around with them)

The carpet that Year One sells is way lighter than the factory carpet and is cut to fit too.

Do you happen to recall how much that carpet cost you???
$229.00 and freight ($24.00).
Victory Racing 12-01-2002, 09:23 AM WOW:eek:
If I wasn't going to bring it home only to cut holes in it I might do that, but I have to make provsions for the cage.
Chris ARE 360 went to Home Depot and got carpet for $35 US and did his whole car. Thats probably more my speed, especially for when I mess up the cuts;)
This was for my 1999 Camaro Stocker. It has an eight point rollbar. If you think the carpet was expensive you would die if you new what I spent on the rest of the car!! But, it sure is pretty!!
Best Regards,
Daren
chevyguy3 12-01-2002, 09:33 AM anybody know exactly what the Year One carpet weighs?
RacinLT1 12-01-2002, 11:20 AM The weight isnt exact, but the shipping weight weight of the year 1 carpet was under 20 lbs.

Full street trim I'm around 3620
Weight in sig is w/o spare, jack, subwoofer, & back seat.
Steve...
Smokn '94 Z 12-01-2002, 11:36 PM 3695 in full trim with me in it. I weigh 195#'s :o
blksunshine 12-03-2002, 05:08 PM race weight
around 3580 with me in it. I weight 200, removed back seat w/belts and spare tire and jack. With 16in salad shooters.
texlurch 12-03-2002, 05:26 PM Take all your interior panels out, and use a 1" hole saw to swiss cheese every piece of metal in sight! Works for airplanes, and all those little holes add up. Also remove the door beams (30-50 lbs each).
An optima style dry cell weighs less than a regular battery..
Don't just take out the bumper support, get that beam and the shocks also.
I feel bad for you guys, my 68 weighs 3050 w/ driver, and carpet, full cage, 2 Jaz seats.. even a radio! One day, I'll get a full chrome moly tube chassis and get it down to 2500 or so street weight! ;)

Are you kidding me? Speed holes? I thought that was always a joke. You actually did that? wtf

96blackbeast 12-09-2002, 03:00 PM 3410 without me. the only thing i took out was the spare and jack
big dave 12-09-2002, 09:30 PM I just weighed mine again a couple weeks ago. I was shocked to find that without the passenger seat (29lbs), front swaybar (15lbs), skinnies up front (32lbs lighter than factory wheels/tires), spare tire (2? lbs), it still weighed 3460 without me (225). Soooo the grand total is 3685. How do you guys do it?
RacinLT1 12-09-2002, 10:00 PM dave, read GMHTP or the first link in my sig.......dont need AC or power steering..LOL
SAR2K 12-10-2002, 12:17 AM Damn these cars are weird... My TA is loaded except power seats. I dropped the front sway bar (but added sub frames), installed a BMR tubular K-member, skinnies up front (25 per tire), and dropped 102 lbs which consisted of the following... spare, jack, MTX Subwoofer, backseat, & floor mats. With a 1/4 tank of gas my race weight is 3525.
I ran 12.07 with all the above and just over 1/2 tank of gas, 3542 range.
It's just weird how some of these F-Bodies weigh in SO heavy even after minor weight reduction.
Steve...
big dave 12-10-2002, 12:52 PM Dirk, we get some really hot days down here in Md., AC is a necessity for me. How much can be gained by deleting the power steering?

r u talking about 4th gens? In the earlier cars they were really THAT HEAVY. We took out the door beams out of a 76 camaro and they had to be around 40lbs each door.
chevyguy3 12-10-2002, 06:05 PM yeah, 4th gen. i sure wish they were 40lbs each, especially for all the effort it took to get them out
