rear gears

i looking into buying gears for the rear end what ratio would give me good performance on the track but still have good drivability. thanks

I am a fan of 3.73's for a good all-around gear. A lot of guys recommend 3.73's for an automatic car, and 4.11's for a stick car. I had 4.10's in my 600hp Mustang with a Tremec. 1st gear was rediculous, I was shifting into 2nd before I even crossed the intersection. My Z28 has 3.73's with an automatic trans. I like the combo a lot.

yea, I have 3.73s in my 6 speed Z and I love them. They don't affect cruising that much and it really helps the car get out of the hole. I wouldn't want to go much higher becasue 1st gear is already really short now.

4.10's are a nice gear, regardless of A4 or M6 :thumb:. What do you currently have though? :think:

If you have an A4 w/2.73's (pretty common) and you want something "middle of the road", 3.42's are actually really nice behind the A4 :cool:. Once you get up to 3.73's, then they start feeling more "extreme" ... at which point you can go all out and get 4.10's and not notice much difference, except even quicker acceleration ;).

IMO, it's not worth the effort to switch to 3.73's from the factory 3.42's if you have an M6 :shrug:. But I know some guys do, and depending on what type of mods you're running, and what trap speeds you run, then the 3.73's will give the car more legs in 4th gear (1:1 ratio).

Average mileage (city/hwy mix) never changed much for me from A4/2.73's --> A4/4.10's or even now with M6/3.23's (a lot of changes, I know ... don't ask!! :lol: )

totally agree with that. i love my 3.73's for the performance, but miss my 2.73's for the milage and drivability. 3.42's would be a nice pick if you drive the car often, other wise 3.73's. 4.10 for m6

ya i forgot to tell you about my trans. its a six speed and my car is mostly stock i dont have much done (intake, race muffler). im not doing anything to it untill im out of school but id like to gear it

I loved the 3.73s in my LT1 M6, 3 Fox M5 Stangs, my 01 M6 Stang GT and have some on the way for this M6. had 4.10s and 4.11s in that LT1 M6 and hated them to no end on the street, but loved them at the track. All I can say is I think the 3.73 is a good all around gear :D

Then go 4.10's! ;) Although, they (Motive) now also make 3.90's for the 10-bolt, which I have a set waiting to go in my car, so I'll let ya know how they work out! :thumb: More of a gain than stopping at 3.73's, but not quite as low as 4.10's. I hope they work ok, and hope they last more than ~1 time at the track??! :(

i was gonna try 3.90s in that tiny cubed 4.6, to help get it off the line, they really seemed to like the lower gears (numerically higher), but I like the lazy rev of my 383...i frequently ride in 2nd around town just to hear that LS1 sing to me....but i'm a wierdo like that...

just don't wanna hafta shift too much, besides...I already ordered the rear;)
