I'm thinking about swapping out my t56 for a turbo 400. I've heard/searched on here for some info, but didn't find anything on which tail shaft I should get so I could reuse my drive shaft. Also whats the difference between a manual valve body and a reverse. Also, any recommendations on builders of turbo 400 that can handle 600-700rwhp. Any info will be great, and I'm sure i'll have more question if I do the swap.
Thanks George

George,
Go with a short tail 400. No matter what, you'll have to change your driveshaft. The Yoke sizes are different. You'll also need to find some way to mount your torque arm. The kit's you see for the 400 are kind of "cheesy". The best bet is to swap to a crossmember mounted torque arm. You'll also need a new crossmember for the transmission, as well as the parts to make your electronic speedo work correctly.
Manual vs. reverse is just as it sounds. I'm not a big fan of reverse pattern valve bodies. The shifter pattern swaps to P.R.N.1.2.3., instead of the stock P.R.N.3.2.1. We use Hipster valve bodies for our manual valve body 400's. They're a standard pattern. Think about it like this...If you're in 3rd gear, and something in the drivetrain lets go, it's a long way back to neutral with a reverse pattern. Their only real advantage is so you won't overshift, and go into reverse. A good shifter will solve that worry.
A 700R4 is a direct swap for your car. It has a better first gear ratio than a 400, and you still have O/D, incase you plan on street driving it. We have 700/4L60E's in the HP range you're looking at with great success.
We can build you a 400 also. Give me a call, and we'll work on some details. 302-250-1202
Thanks,

Frank thanks for that input. The over drive thing isn't that much of a deal, might drive it 5-6k a year. I already have a bmr trac pack in the car. Just wondering, how much tq will those 700/4l60e you build hold. My set up right put out almost 700rwtq and we stepped up the turbo/boost and fuel system to go bigger.
Thanks George

George,
We'd have to find that limit first. We have them pushing over 600 RHTQ right now, and they're still holding up.
Thanks,

I wouldn't dismiss OD so readily in a car that sees 5-6,000/y on the street. Ever driven a car with a high stall, non lock-up converter and no OD? Not very pleasant, IMO.

No , I'm a Junk man :D , I'll hold on to high dollar part like that and put it in the attic where I keep my old goodies. Nice try though. It wont be for a while , I have to get my intercooler stuff straight, front clip stuff straightened up, and the car running top notch again before I make the swap. Shouldn't be long, I hope.
