Shellhead 01-11-2007, 05:33 PM Just got home from "Industry Day" at the auto show and had to post something I noticed about the Camaro Convertible......THE HEADLIGHTS ARE DIFFERENT!!! Looking closely at it, it looks like they put a lens over LED lights.....but since the convertible is a new car, wouldn't it be cheaper to put HIDs in, instead of LEDs? Is it possible the 'vert has HIDs? And if those are LEDs, why cover them with a lens? Opinions?http://webpages.charter.net/allbuj/Headlights.jpg:confused:
shock6906 01-11-2007, 05:48 PM I think it was stated that the headlights have to be a single bulb and not a multi-bulb set up. I could be wrong. Maybe what you're seeing is a more production ready version of the headlights.
EllwynX 01-11-2007, 05:58 PM I thought it was written (somewhere in some official release) that the convertible has different headlights from the coupe.
I remember it stating they had the 'halo' effect, but can't remember exactly what else it said.
The headlights on the convertible are fine with me. As long as the keep the 'halo' effect I'll be happy.
terps 01-11-2007, 06:07 PM I love those halo/angel eye lights. I just hope we don't start seeing people swap those out for all kinds of weird colors like red and stuff like I've seen on some ugly BMW's.
mlars 01-11-2007, 06:14 PM Everyone think these will make it to the production car?

I'm begining to wonder about Camaro.
Independent rear suspension. Supposedly an interior that rasies the level of quality of materials, expensive HID headlights...... all at a price "just a few hundred more than the Mustang"???!
If the car actually bases just over the price of a new Mustang (about 20K), I suspect GM will make up the costs of the car line on both the top and the mid range models, which would be priced considerbly more than the Mustang.
I'm very intrested in seeing how all this plays out.

I don't think I've ever seen the halo's changed in BMW's. Sounds interesting to me.
If given the option/possibility I'd definitely have the halo altered to a color that suits me (:::coughcough:::purple:::coughcough:::).
pickardracing 01-11-2007, 07:47 PM I hope the halo's get trashed. Rice Rice Baby.

I've never seen a Ricer with halo headlights... BMW, yes, Ricer, no.
IMO the halo's give it a higher end look. The halo's also give it a decidedly 'bird of prey' appearance.
Losing the halo's would take away from the agressive, hawklike look of the frontend.

I agree - the Halo lights are definitely an upscale looking item. Except of course when this happens::eek:

91 Camaro RS 01-11-2007, 08:39 PM If they lose the halos, I'll be pissed. I hope they if HIDs don't come standard they're at least an option. I'm glad I added them to my 91.
SCNGENNFTHGEN 01-11-2007, 08:41 PM IMO what we're seein', is what we're gettin', and I'm a lovin'!
Caps94ZODG 01-11-2007, 10:07 PM Think it will be an option on the car..regular lights on V6's and the halo HID on the upper models..
jg95z28 01-12-2007, 01:03 AM My son has angel eyes on his M3, and I have to admit, they do look nice. :D
Klypto 01-12-2007, 01:08 AM every day im looking at these pics and thinking to myself.. and i said i would never sell this car... dumped alot of money into it, and this beauty is coming out now... GRRRRrrrRR.. *** ****** **** *** ** ***** get the point?

99SilverSS 01-12-2007, 04:57 AM It may be just me but I don't see the difference in the convert and coupe headlights. They seem to have the same Halo type bezel and the actual headlight seems to be very similar but looking different because of the angle of the picture and distance. The thing I don't see is the turn signal/side marker light on the convert which is probably due to the shading and light angles.
Josh452 01-12-2007, 09:14 AM Yes, the GM press release mentions the different headlights, I had them written down but have seemed to have lost the piece of paper amongst the piles on my computer desk.
But, GM did mention them. It even says it on the actual display at the show stand.

Definitely it's a popular upgrade. Most people just change it to something that's pure white, but then you see the ones running around with red or blue once in a while. I don't even think that's DOT legal :D
91 Camaro RS 01-12-2007, 11:04 AM Aftermarket HIDs are not legal, even if you have projectors for them. But there's really no chance of being cited for them unless you're blinding people or you REALLY piss off a cop.

I just noticed the convertible doesnt have the blinkers lit when the headlights are on giving it more ot the 69 look. I love it! LED's would be just fine with me if they are better than halogen. HID is heavy and expensive.
91 Camaro RS 01-13-2007, 02:42 PM Heavy? They might add 5 lbs. max.

Winner...
SGMZ28 01-14-2007, 11:31 AM I really have my doubts about LED headlights making the cut for production headlights. They are a great point of source light, but it would take a whole bunch of LEDs to make it close to a viable headlight. My personal opinion is we'll see a HID option on the 5th gen.
ImportedRoomate 01-14-2007, 11:50 AM LEDs wont be happening. To get the proper amount of light even just for the low beam you'd need 2-3 of the concepts lights placed side-by-side on each side. You would then need another separate one for high beams. Plus, they cost 3-4 times more than xenon.
The 2008 Lexus LS 600h L will be the first to offer led headlights, but only low beams.

Im really hoping for bi-xenon projectors. They'll keep with the concepts look while only requiring that single unit.
30thZ286speed 01-14-2007, 12:54 PM I read an article on the net a few months back that all automotive lighting will be LED by 2010. No more incandecent bulbs, which will be cool but they will have to do some work to get LED headlights to work.

Nope, not a chance. The 2nd vehicle to even get LED headlights in the industry gets them in 09 or 10 and they're still gonna be expensive as hell.
5thgen69camaro 01-14-2007, 01:16 PM Heavy? They might add 5 lbs. max.
Im indifferent about what the headlights are to be honest. If HIDs are reliable light and reasonably priced thats cool. The look however without the blinkers being lit up to me just looks much better when the headlights are on.

HIDs aren't heavy. I added a projector setup to my LS1 Camaro, and the ballast, projector...etc...weigh at the very most 1-2 lbs.
They are expensive though, and I hope they are optional with the new camaro. Adding a HID projectors to my car was one of the best thing i've done.
Bayer-Z28 01-20-2007, 05:39 PM I still wish I worked at the Chevy dealer. We used to watch video updates as to what was comming out as far as new Chevy news. I remember back in 2000 I saw a video about the Silverado's going to HID's... Never happened.
It seems like an angle differance between the pics. If you look at the reflection on the bumper of the Vert, you can defenetly see that they put a lense in front of the bulb (or whatever it is).... Diffuser lense, maybe?
also, I love the Angel eye look... Halos, whatever..
formula-bird 01-27-2007, 12:46 PM I was just over at a BMW forum, and they said that the new camaro was going to have angel eyes. So i jumped over here and seen this thread. I have seen angel eyes in ricers before. BMWs that look good with angel eyes are the 92+ models. I had angel eye lights in my e30 for sometime but changed to euro smiley ellips. Most people start calling the angel eyes rice is when they are a different color like red or blue, and not the pure white or off white that most people seen. But that is in BMWs. I've also seen angel eyes in VW's.
