675hp Viper MAY be Dodge's answer to Blue DevilOzoneNorth 01-09-2007, 01:29 PM Looks like the Horsepower wars may be going nuclear... http://www.allpar.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=87362 2000GTP 01-09-2007, 01:54 PM The link is not working for me. :( mastrdrver 01-09-2007, 02:39 PM The Viper is suppose to get more power when they redesign it. I think it is set for a total redesign at the end of this year, but I can't exactly remember. Jackass 01-09-2007, 02:48 PM Makes my Spirit even slower. 2000GTP 01-09-2007, 02:49 PM I've heard of the new Viper getting a 600hp powerplant, nothing about 675 though. Gotta love horsepower wars. OzoneNorth 01-09-2007, 03:29 PM From Viper Club of America via Allpar.com: SRT and Mopar Showcase Viper Possibilities at NAIAS Tuesday January 9, 12:01 am ET Custom Viper displays tweaks from Mopar Performance Parts – and 675 horsepower! Farmington Hills, Mich., January 9 /EXCLUSIVE from viperclub.org/ -- Much speculation has been made since the first details were released on the 2008 Dodge Viper scheduled to appear this week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Of course today is the day you were supposed to be reading about it, however some magazine editions hit the newsstands – and websites – a little earlier. Viper buyers, already giddy over the addition of a whopping 90 horsepower (yes, 600 total ponies under that revised hood) still had one nagging worry in the back of their minds: What about this long-rumored “Blue Devil” from the “other” American super car camp? They needn’t have worried. In a surprise addition to this weeks show, DaimlerChrysler’s Mopar and SRT (Street & Racing Technology) Division have added a third Viper in concept form, joining the Venom Red SRT10 Roadster and Viper Red SRT10 Coupe with white racing stripes. Reminiscent of the SRT10 Carbon shown at SEMA in 2003, this latest Coupe variation showcases the many possibilities of this potent platform. “We at SRT, along with our counterparts at Mopar Performance, wanted to build something for NAIAS that would show what can be done with the new '08 Viper,” said Steve Sharples, Viper Brand Manager at SRT. “This includes many of the new Mopar Performance parts which will be available for the car when it starts shipping to showrooms later this year.” The Mopar Performance Parts featured are: - Tubular Exhaust Header Package - High-flowing, Cat-Back Exhaust System - Low-restriction, functional Cold Air Intake System - Fully adjustable Coilover Suspension Kit - "Sidewinder" Lightweight Wheels (with anodized finish) And don’t forget the “Racing” in SRT, as they added these race-inspired parts as well: - Titanium Valves and Connecting Rods - Cast Litex Pistons and Lightened Crankshaft - High Flow Intake Manifold with Polished Upper - Carbon Fiber Coil Covers and Crinkle Black Valve Covers - Adapted Dodge Viper Competition Coupe Rear Wing and Front Splitter - Michelin Racing Slicks, 18" in front and 19" in back - 6 point racing restraints - Viper "Driver's Stripe" paint scheme The results? Well besides one of the most stunning Vipers ever to greet the public, it also satisfies the Viper faithful. With a few Mopar Performance parts and some additional internal engine tweaks the car makes an incredible 675 horsepower, with the torque climbing even more – from the impressive stock 2008 number of 560 ft lbs to a mind-boggling 650 ft lbs. You would be hard-pressed to find another exotic from any continent making those kind of numbers. Will these modifications ever make it to a production car? SRT will not comment on future product. But if what is shown here can be done by visiting your local Mopar parts counter, we already like what we see. Blue Devil shmevil! georgejetson 01-09-2007, 03:40 PM No, that's just some officially sanctioned mod parts. Here's the story as I've heard it: There is no 07 Viper. 08 Viper has 600 hp in the current chassis and will go into production momentarily. That was just officially announced today. New chassis/body/etc comes for 09, off a new platform (ZC) that may or may not be shared with one or more other DCX sports cars. This engine will carry over, with or without further tweaks. Rumors suggest that this engine can be tweaked to over 700 hp if needed to meet competitive challenges. 2000GTP 01-09-2007, 03:58 PM Yeah, from the way I am reading it, with some bolt-on Mopar parts, the 600hp Viper can climb up to 675. No big deal considering the same can be done with the Blue Devil. mastrdrver 01-09-2007, 05:11 PM No, that's just some officially sanctioned mod parts. If that shared car is suppose to be the Firepower, it apparently has been canned. 91_z28_4me 01-09-2007, 05:58 PM If that shared car is suppose to be the Firepower, it apparently has been canned. Which just sucks! Caps94ZODG 01-09-2007, 06:07 PM firepower was canned??? WTF that sucks georgejetson 01-09-2007, 08:29 PM If that shared car is suppose to be the Firepower, it apparently has been canned. Yeah, I know. There's supposedly another Chrysler sports car and a Mercedes being developed on the platform. That said, the way Chrysler has been cutting stuff lately, I'm not convinced the Viper itself will be around much longer, much less its future platform mates... Capn Pete 01-09-2007, 11:57 PM Yeah, I know. There's supposedly another Chrysler sports car and a Mercedes being developed on the platform. That said, the way Chrysler has been cutting stuff lately, I'm not convinced the Viper itself will be around much longer, much less its future platform mates... How are Viper sales in the grand scheme of things anyways? Are they not still profitable for DCX?? A little "healthy competition" is good for everybody ;). I hope the Viper isn't dropped anytime soon? :( mastrdrver 01-10-2007, 12:46 AM I remember reading something about the next SL, or some other highend MB sports car, to end up on the same assembly line as the Viper and would be Firepower. I don't think the Viper will be canned, but like you said they way they are killing cars now you never know. The reasoning I heard that the Firepower was killed was it was too close to some similar MB. It was one car I was really looking forward to since it was suppose to position it against the Vette. number77 01-10-2007, 01:48 AM This is a Viper Concept. It has 675hp/650tq. But the car has beautiful tires with white Michelin written on them (like the old race car tires). 2K1SunsetSS 01-10-2007, 08:31 AM When they viper can hang with the current z06 on a road course, has all the current options the z06 and looks as good I might care. mastrdrver 01-10-2007, 08:54 PM The Viper will never have all the conforts like the Corvette because it was built with a different purpose. The Vette has and always will be a street car first and a race car second, the Viper has always been a race first and formost. The thing that kills the Viper is the extra weight, relative to the Vette, that it has had for a while. georgejetson 01-10-2007, 09:14 PM The thing that kills the Viper is the extra weight, relative to the Vette, that it has had for a while. Rumor has it that the 08 has lost a couple hundred pounds. They got rid of the run-flats, went with lighter wheels, and there may be more CF; it's unclear. mastrdrver 01-11-2007, 02:47 AM ..but a couple hundred pounds will put it at ~3300 lbs, still a nice 300lbs short of what the current Z06 is and probably another hundred of what the blue devil will be. I know Guy has said that you can make weight handle, as he has pointed out with his land yatch he calls a t-bird, but weight still doesn't help with cornering and braking. KLee 01-11-2007, 08:26 AM GMPP is sure to have a response. I love the horsepower wars. :D georgejetson 01-11-2007, 10:51 AM ..but a couple hundred pounds will put it at ~3300 lbs, still a nice 300lbs short of what the current Z06 is and probably another hundred of what the blue devil will be. I know Guy has said that you can make weight handle, as he has pointed out with his land yatch he calls a t-bird, but weight still doesn't help with cornering and braking. This is true, and the Viper guys have traditionally counted on steamroller-size tires to help offset that problem, but it's catching up with them. Supposedly the new design for 2009 will be significantly lighter. It ought to be lighter now for the price they're asking. We'll see. OzoneNorth 01-12-2007, 10:53 AM The battle lines are drawn: http://www.leftlanenews.com/2007/01/12/gm-accepts-viper-srt10-challenge/ georgejetson 01-12-2007, 11:31 AM Oh, they were drawn a LOOOOOOONG time ago. :D | ||
