Honda Accord Coupe Concept Poised to Reset Segment Benchmark

January 8, 2007 -- DETROIT -- The Honda Accord Coupe Concept reveals a totally new look for the next-generation Accord, along with key technologies for safety, fuel efficiency and performance, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The Accord is Honda's best-selling model in North America and its debut at NAIAS marks the first time that an Accord concept vehicle has ever been shown at a major auto show.

The styling of the Accord Coupe Concept conveys a powerful stance through its long hood, deeply sculpted lower body and fastback roofline. A six-sided grille and projector headlamps that recess deep into the front fenders contribute to an unmistakable and aggressive front fascia. Quad exhaust outlets integrated into the rear diffuser further convey performance and style beyond any Accord to date.

"The Accord Coupe Concept demonstrates the styling direction for the upcoming, eighth-generation Accord," said John Mendel, senior vice president of American Honda. "As the industry's target for midsize segment excellence, the all-new Accord will set a new benchmark for safety, efficiency, performance, refinement and style."

A more powerful and lower-emissions V6 engine will provide higher fuel efficiency with the incorporation of Honda's next-generation Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology. Honda leads the industry with the highest Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rating for any full line manufacturer* of 29.2 miles per gallon - well above the industry average of 25.3 miles per gallon.

As part of Honda's "Safety for Everyone" initiative, all next-generation Accord models will include the company's Advanced Compatibility Engineering(TM) (ACE(TM)) Body Structure. Honda's ACE Body Structure incorporates a front-end frame structure that helps absorb and disperse crash energy over a large area in a frontal impact. ACE also makes the vehicle more crash compatible in frontal impacts with vehicles of differing ride heights.

The current generations of the Odyssey (2005), Civic (2006) and CR-V (2007) all have the ACE Body Structure. Together, the ACE-equipped vehicles represent more than 50 percent of all 2007 Honda vehicles sold on a sales-weighted basis. With the addition of the next-generation Accord to the lineup of vehicles with ACE, more than 75 percent will be equipped with the technology on a sales-weighted basis after it goes on sale.

Honda Accord History

The Honda Accord, currently in its seventh generation in 30 years, remains Honda's best-selling vehicle worldwide and has consistently been one of the top five best-selling automobiles in the U.S. Known for its ride and handling, comfort and convenience features, safety, quality and refinement, the Accord delivers world-class style with sophistication and performance. The Accord was launched in 1976 with subsequent major re-designs debuting in 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2003. More than 9.5 million Accords have been sold in the U.S. since 1976.

Car and Driver magazine named the 2007 Honda Accord as one of the winners of its prestigious and highly competitive annual "10Best Cars" award. The Accord has achieved "10Best" status 21 times in the 25 years that Car and Driver editors have been conducting the competition, more than any other vehicle in the award's history.

Why yes, I did! Not with the first two, but that headlight shot was a give-away...actually, I figured it could be an Acura or Honda, Accord, or something like a coupe version of the TSX.

Way sharper than the current model.

I see sort of a compilation of different cars in it. A little 350Z/G35 in the greenhouse, Hyundai Tiburon in the doors/side scoops, some 3-Series in the character line that runs through the door handle.

I think I like it better than the Altima coupe, though I haven't looked at those pics in a while...

Picture #1 I was thinking it had the obvious lines of the previous-gen (99-03) Acura CL (2-door version of the 98-02 Accord).

Picture #2 didn't help me out much.

Picture #3 with the headlight and especially the edge of the grill had me thinking "Acura, all the way".

I suppose I guess close enough since around the rest of the world the Accord looks like the TL does here in the US, anyway.:p

Very stylish. The front looks like the S2000,That 1/4 window looks like its from that Nissan GT-R concept and some of the back looks a little G6 This is one company, I wish GM had bought...

That, and I think the rest of the world calls them Honda's anyway. Acura is only for the US, I think...I know the NSX is a Honda elsewhere....but since I care "||" that much about Hondas, I may have old info and not know what I'm talking about either!

Yep the 2003-2007 body style accord was designed entirely for north america by a studio, I believe, from california? The accord known to the rest of the world is what we know as the Acura TL and Acura TSX (depending on the country in question and whether they like smaller or larger sized cars)... though they aren't equipped as nicely as our Acuras are here.
Some of the world knows Acuras and Lexus models as Hondas and Toyotas only... it just depends on the culture in that country and whether or not they respond positively to 'segregated' branding for premium cars and dealerships.

It doesn't mean they're not nice cars or "just a Honda" or whatever - it just means Honda has determined that in "X" country, it serves absolutely no good, if not some harm (by weakening the depth of the brand) to separate the two out. It's really just a cultural compatibility thing.

I was gonna guess the next Tiburon.

I like Honda's recent styling direction(s), I heard the sedan is supposed to be equally as racy(?).

A WHOLE lot better than the current one. Jeez, why can't an American company design something exciting in this class?

I thought Acura as well, but at first blush I wasn't so sure, I saw some g6 coupe and Tiburon in there at first.

Nicer looking then the current car for sure. Regarding the current Accord - the TSX is so much better looking an Accord than the current NA car. However, I am still very much content with GM (especially with what's promised/known to be coming down the pipe) without fear of jumping ship to Honda. Byut, if for some catastrophic reason I did jump, it would be to Honda long before it would ever be Toyota.

My thoughts exactly. Well I guess BMW is flattered!
