Z284ever 01-07-2007, 09:20 PM So what about it exactly, kept it from being called Equinox SS?
Here's what Scott had to say on another site:
I believe there are vehicles in the portfolio right now that should not have the SS moniker....... (for instance -- the Cobalt SS Supercharged? Yes. Cobalt SS? No.)
.......that said -- I felt the Equinox Sport should --esp. with the increased horsepower.........however, there was one issue that held it back. (and I'm not talkin'...........)
all that said -- we're going in the right direction.
Any guesses?
Hoodshaker 01-07-2007, 10:37 PM Heh, I would guess this follows the recent quote from GM about how the "SS" designation has been watered down and going forward will only be used on true top of the line performance vehicles. And no, I don't think its good news for those who think Z28 should be the top dog...

I think some people only think of the Z28 as top dog because of the limited number that was built back in the 1st generation.
Z28 vs. SS...they were both "top dog", but each was built to suit a different need. Z28 being a road racer, the SS being the torque machine. Apples to oranges.
number77 01-07-2007, 11:09 PM We always talk on here about how the SS name is a chirade. From its first intoduction we knew it was going to get steadily diluted from then until they stopped running the SS name [on normal vehicles].
It's good that GM is finally going to stop using the name on a vehicle and will stay committed to one image.
(as opposed to building up an imagine, just to turn around and make crummier vehicles to make more profit)

I don't think the Equinox is crummy. It's V6 is GM's top of the line and puts out more power than the version Cadillac uses.
And why did Pontiac call it's version, GXP?

I thought the optional higher powered Pontiac Torrent was going to be called GT, not GXP?

Honestly, there are two reasons in my opinion.
1. The GXP line has no fabled 40 year old reputation to uphold, having only come into existence originally on the Pontiac Bonneville in this decade.
2. Pontiac guys aren't nearly as uptight on this issue. Trans Am vs WS6 vs Formula, ha! The WS6 is also the rpo for the Comp G package on the 04 and up Grand Prixs, No one cried.

It's an SUV for soccer-moms who really want to own a minivan, but the other soccer-moms would make fun of her.

So the SS badge should be restricted from anything which offers any utility? What about the TB SS?

That's kinda a poor analogy. WS6 was performance package that you could get on T/A, Formula, or any number of of other Pontiacs, it wasn't versus anything.

Just like the SS was a "peformance" package that you could get on other Camaro models. I'm not a 1st gen Camaro expert, however I do believe you could get an RS-SS car, no? And of course the 4th gens were all left the factory as Z28's before going to SLP to have parts exchanged. It seems to be the Z28 guys who are creating the "Z28 vs SS" debate. At any rate, I couldn't care less which one is on top. I was just answering your question about the why the Torrent was allowed to wear the GXP badge...
Z284ever 01-08-2007, 10:22 AM Okay, I'll take a shot. They changed the name to Sport because Equinoxessess sounds funny.
That's my guess. :)
Doug Harden 01-08-2007, 10:40 AM If you're worried about some tie to the Camaro line-up...don't worry ;) (winkie club member in good status)
AAAAAAA 01-08-2007, 10:45 AM Maybe there is an equinox with even more performance in the works.

That's why I luvya Doug! Did you pick up that bottle of chardonnay for Scott? Because I'll be expecting afew more winkies from you in the coming days. :D

If GM puts the a FWD LSx V8 together with the 6 speed auto and a decent AWD system then I would say they have the best FWD based powertrain available.

That would be my guess. SS should be for performance vehicles only. Sure you can put a bigger engine and stiffer springs in an Equinox, but it's still a SUV and because of that it's not going to have exceptional performance by performance car standards.
If something has SS on its fenders, the driver shouldn't have to worry about getting smoked by Martha in her V6 Camry.

My guess as well. Especially if the 'nox outlives the Trailblazer.
Z284ever 01-08-2007, 04:07 PM I'd doubt the Equinox could ever get a V8. The upcoming Lambdas are a different story though.

Capn Pete 01-08-2007, 04:21 PM but are much larger/heavier.:p
Heavy performance ... it's the way of the future buddy!! :thumb: Just look at the GT500 and the upcoming Challenger!!!
.....oh, how I hope this doesn't come back to bite us all!! :(
97z28/m6 01-08-2007, 06:08 PM well a 5.3 in a Equinox would be killer.

That's my guess. :)Correct. Say it several times real fast... it's a tongue twister!
OutsiderIROC-Z 01-08-2007, 09:10 PM GM may finally be sick of bastardizing the "SS" name.
Z284ever 01-09-2007, 01:05 AM GM may finally be sick of bastardizing the "SS" name.
It's not a matter of bastardizing. The SS sub-brand is simply a tool to sell cars and trucks. Dilute it too much and it loses it's impacts. Make it too strong, and you limit the number of products that you can sell with it.
It's a fine line.
Ken S 01-09-2007, 03:33 AM my shot in dark guess cause i can't think of anything else : doesn't brake fast and/or consitantly enough.
jg95z28 01-09-2007, 10:54 AM GM may finally be sick of bastardizing the "SS" name.I'm not too sure. To me, "bastardizing" would be placing it on a non-Chevrolet. Supersport has always stood for Chevrolet performance + luxury. Besides, it sounds a heck of a lot better than "LTZ". :D
