Hey, does anyone in Dallas have an OBD II autoscanner I can borrow for a few minutes? My Corolla has the check engine light on, and as far as I can tell, nothing is wrong with it. I'd just like to get the code out of it, cross reference it with my Haynes manual and see what the deal is.
I live sort of near SMU; just outside of University park at Inwood and Lover's Lane. Anybody near here who's available in the next few hours? I want to get this taken care of before Monday, and if it's something serious, get it to the dealership ASAP.

Nevermind guys, I got it taken care of at a place that does state inspections. Have an evap system malfunction.

Just FYI, all Autozones have a scanner that they will use for you for free...

 thanks for the heads-up. I ended up going to the place I get my state inspection done at, and they did it for free.

I thought that might be the problem, but the check engine light never went away once I spun it around a couple more clicks. Also, according to my code list, there is an "Evap system leak", and that code wasn't in my computer. Only the Evap system malfunction was in there.
Quite a mystery. I ended up disconnecting the battery to reset the computer, and the light hasn't come on again.
It was pretty convenient that this light came on in a way though. I discovered my radiator was about 16 ounces low in coolant/water so I topped it up. Not sure where the leak is, but it must be pretty slow. I haven't done any coolant stuff to the car since june 2005.

you have to clear the code for it to go away....most scanner can clear the code for you.....as you found out disconnecting the battery will also clear the codes.
When I worked as a service advisor I had a customer come in complaining that her SES light was on...I asked her if her gas cap was tight and she replied that she always makes sure it is tight before she leaves the gas station. Well the reason I asked right off the bat was her gas cap was hanging on the outside of the car.
