I8ASTNG 12-28-2006, 01:05 PM My 10 bolt is leaking, so going to have to replace it with a 12bolt. :D
Anyways, I know Strange/Moser makes them, I basically just want to order a housing w/axles that will bolt in and retain my stock brakes, abs, etc.
I have heard Moser torque arm mount is JUNK, so maybe I should stick with Strange?
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks,
Trevor
Klypto 12-28-2006, 01:20 PM everyone needs a 12 bolt ;)
and i love my strange

I haven't heard that about the Moser 12-bolt??? I'm not sure if Moser casts their own 12-bolt center-sections w/ the F-Body torque-arm mount, or buys their center-sections from another source. However, looking at the Moser casting, the design it looks sound (as-good-as, or better than the OEM, GM 10-bolt) and I don't know of anyone who has had a problem with the Moser torque-arm mount. Please clarify "junk" as that does not explain the technical details of a potential problem.

Injuneer 12-29-2006, 01:15 AM Always amazed (or is it amused?) by the use of the highly technical term "junk"....... :)
The Moser 12-bolt does not mount the troque arm to the center casting using the two full-length through-bolts like the GM and Strange castings. They have 4 individual bolts that thread into holes in the Moser casting. They are notorious for coming loose, and causing damage to the torque arms. I believe at least one of the aftermarket TA manufacturers will not guarantee his TA with the Moser.
Bandit 1 12-29-2006, 02:45 AM Never had that problem with mine (locktite), but I hear the same from people about those bolts. I am fed up with my gears whining far worse than they should, I put 4.10s in my 10 bolt myself and screwed it up and they didn't whine as bad as this the Moser12. Every time Iv took it to the track and launched it at 5k with slicks it would get a little worse, I wish i got a locker instead of the truetrac.

I was not aware the Moser 12-bolt uses four individual bolts with the housing tapped, as opposed to the two long thru-bolts in the OEM 10-bolt for the T/A attachment. And that is why I read this forum.
I have a Spohn adjustable T/A with the floor pan mount. And, I routinely check all the bolts and nuts on the T/A to ensure they’re not getting loose, including the two long bolts that attach the T/A to the center housing (w/ nylon insert lock-nuts on the bottom). I can see where it would be a “little difficult” with the Moser to get a wrench on the top two bolts to check for tightness with the rear-end installed. Hopefully, using locktite w/ correct torque should prevent the bolts from getting loose.

I8ASTNG 12-29-2006, 10:04 PM Well after reading some posts about the Moser/Strange 12 bolts, I am seriously thinking about Strange. I like the idea of the bolts for control arm going all the way through the housing, instead of screwing into housing.
I am also thinking of just getting a complete housing with gears/abs setup/posi/33 spline axles as a package, I figure in the long run it might be cheaper/easier.
ONLY thing I am worried about is if their setup is crap, then I have to ship it back, so that is downtime I don't need.
Any other thoughts?

mzgp5x 12-29-2006, 11:01 PM I run a Moser 12 bolt on a 1997 Camarro. The Random torque arm lower bolts did come loose. I installed red loc-tite. I recommend to inspect the torque arm holes and the diameter of the thread fasteners. A spacer or "stepped" flat washer may be needed to contain movement between the torque arm and rear diff casting. In my case, the TA has not come loose again with the red loc-tite. The Moser rear has performed good for me. What really sold me was the option with the Tru-trac gear diff.
Hope this helps.

If the bolt holes in the T/A mount are too big (much larger than the bolts), I can see where that would be a problem (no mechanical stability) and that would possibly cause the bolts to get loose. I’m still planning to get a Moser 12-bolt and I already have a Spohn adjustable T/A. I will check the bolt hole diameter on the Spohn when I do the 12-bolt install. Also use the correct washers (if required), red Locktite and torque the bolts correctly.
Has anyone had any experience with using the Moser 12-bolt and a Spohn T/A?

Zitty'sZ 01-12-2007, 11:44 AM Another downside to the moser rear is you have to drill and tap a hole for the rear brake line block to mount it to the rear , where as the strange already has this done for you. I recentlly installed my strange 12 bolt and it went in without any problems and so far it runs very quiet! I have heard alot more people dissatisfied with moser than strange. My .02 cents.
Kevin97ss 01-13-2007, 01:05 AM If I were to have the choise again, I would go with the Strange unit. Mainly because it would have been more "street car friendly". The Moser is more bulky and noisey and just more "race car friendly". Never had a problem with the Moser 4-bolt TA mount using the factory stamped torque arm.

metallicsniper 01-13-2007, 08:28 PM go with the strange S60. tbyrne is having a group purchase on it, it has the least parasitic loss, 5% 12 bolt is 7% and 9 in 9%,
CamaroRacing12 01-15-2007, 12:50 AM so strange over moser 12 bolt?
Zitty'sZ 01-15-2007, 02:23 AM Yes!
mzgp5x 01-16-2007, 11:29 AM I'm sure the Strange is a good unit, but, I like my Moser-12. You never know what your gettin into when you buy mail-order. Sometimes it takes a little additional fab. I think they are both good products.
