What's the differance between LS1 Brakes and C5???

I did some searching, but none answered this question.

What is the differance betwen the LS1 Brakes and the C5? I see a lot of LT1 Cars upgrading to LS1 brakes or C5. The rotors seem slightly larger and the obvious differance of Dual piston front calipers from LT1. I know that both the C5 and LS1 are dual piston.

Might be a stupid question...

If we are talking front brakes, LS1 fronts rotors are 12" and C5 are 13".
The calipers are nearly identical in terms of shape and twin piston specs.

C5 front brakes make the 17" wheels a requirement, 16" will hit the caliper.

I belive the C5 calipers are pressure cast while LS1 calipers are gravity cast. At least I think.

C5 rotors are 12.8" but commonly mistaken for 13".

And C5 rotors have directional cooling veins, I dont think LS1 rotors have those.

The C5 setup won't fit all 17" rims; didn't fit my Enkei Winns so I ended up going with the Baer 13" Track kit which is based on the C4 setup.

Yes, a C5 brake swap will fit 17" wheels. They just won't fit ALL 17" wheels. This is where researching the swap comes in handy. For instance they won't fit Firehawk wheels but will fit 10 spoke SS.

As stated before, the calipers are cast differently. The C5 calipers would show less flex in extreme conditions. If you're not racing then you'll never know the difference. C5 calipers have smaller pistons than the LS1 calipers. You can run LS1 calipers on a C5 set up.

The pad sizes are different. The adbutment bracket is different due to thicker bolts for the C5 and the fluid lines are longer on the C5.

Rotor size was discussed. If you want to be technical LS1 is 11.8" and C5 is 12.8". Most people just round it up. C5's rotors are dierctionally veined.

Firehawk wheels clear the LG G-Stop brakes.

The C5 conversion would not fit my 17" Simmons OM's. If you can't find out for sure if the conversion will fit for the 17" wheels you have..if you have 17"..then try to locate someone in your area with a C5 that will let you bolt a front whell up to it...thats what I did, luckily a guy in the local car club I'm in had one.

Is converting to C5 brakes even work the 800 bucks or are the other options like Baer or SSBC better?

$800!! Its less than half that plus your choice of rotors and pads, I had the complete set brand new GM parts and brand new slotted rotors and pads for around $600. Compared to similar Bear brake setups for around $950, not to mention when something breaks on the Bear setup, your stuck with having to order expensive parts from them and wait for them to be delivered...with the C5, just go to your local parts store.
Its well worth it...too bad they wouldn't work with my set up, so I exchanged the rotors and then sold all the parts on this board for $380.

So the rotors and loaded calipers for six bills?? That's good to know!!!
Got all the parts from Dal and slotted rotors from Thunder Racing. Do a search for C5 brake parts and you should find a list of parts and their price...off the top of my head, the calipers were $99 each...then you have several brackets and the lines.

The odd thing I found was that the red powdercoated ZO6 calipers were cheaper than the black C5 calipers.....

IIRC gmpartsdirect was like that, but it was on several sites.

Nice, search google or what? Man that is a good deal?? I really want an upgrade my brakes.

Oh sorry, I was leaving off the cost of the conversion brackets since I never bought those before discovering the brakes would not fit with my wheels, so add another $275 to that :(

Here's the parts list...its listed several times in this post.
