Best street tire?

Ok i searched, but i couldn't really find my answer

I bought my z28 off some guy and the tires on their now are Dunlop Sp Sport 8000s 315/35r17

So they are pretty big, but there is 0 tread left

Basically i'm having a huge problem hooking, and i know drag radials are the answer, but i'm wondering since my tires are so wide that if a good street tire would suffice.

I know nittos only get like 12-15k miles and i'm lookin for a little more than that since its mainly a DD with spirited takeoffs and occasional street races.

Any recommendations? Apparently dunlops suck

hey Gun, i hook really well actually for my setup, but look at my mods compared to urs...u might have a little problem hooking...i used to run the Fuzion ZRi's all around and i could spin wheels in second easily, but with these new tires they grip alot better and instead of spinning in second im taking off ;) ...and i duno if its me or im makin this up in my head, but the new Kumho's also feel like i get a smoother ride...i really wanted the Kumho Ecsta ASX tires but i was broke at the time and $50 a tire was lookin better than $82 a tire especially for the performance differences which doesnt seem like much...

Stay away from any street tire Kumho unless it is the MX. I have had the Kumho 712 and they SUCK!!! They couldn't even handle my car with just a lid and catback.

If you're worried about off the line traction why not go to a 275/40-17? Little less tread but more sidewall. You'd be suprised what more sidewall will do for you. More than the extra tread width you'll be giving up. This will also open up a much larger realm of possibilities where you can get great performing tires w/out breaking the bank.

Just one example:
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findTireProductCategoryDetailBrnd.do?tpc=FALHZA&tp=Passenger%2FPerformance&tc=FALHH7

I'm very pleased with this tire. They're on my daily driven cammed 00 SS. Hooks pretty well for not being R compound. Haven't had any probs in rain either.

I have like 295/35/18's(on my lt1) and they do not seem hook as well since there sidewall is smaller. There toyo proxies r1 or whatever.

I got about 23 or 24k on my Kumho MX and when I got rid of them, they had about 3.5/32s and I only rotated them once and had about 20 burnouts on them. So I was happy.

I have the firestones on my ls1 car, and they seem to hook good! And in the rain there really good.

Kumho MXs don't come in 315s. Lakeshore Wheel & Tire told me Kumho is stopping production on the MXs.

I have MX's and for the price they are an great tire...When I was looking for tires it came down to either Wide Ovals or MX's...I think you'd be happy with either one.

The wide oval is a summer tire, keep that in mind. When it is warm out they hook really good. But right now in chicago where it is high 30's, low 40's, they can break loose in 2nd gear pretty easy. Safety should be your number one concern.

Ive had them on for maybe 5k miles and they wear excellent. Ive done a few good burnouts and the rears are almost as large as the fronts. I thought they would wear alot faster than they have.

Traction isn't a problem, with 160hp!

They sucked with 310whp and definately would w/what my car puts out now. They also push out easy on sharp turns too, even at low speeds, but yes the trammeling is not fun.

Anyone have experience with BFG KDW's and KD's?? Just curious if there's much noticable difference between the two, in both wet and dry conditions?

How about Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's??? Anyone have experience with those?

The KDW will be better in the rain the KD is much better dry. KD is pretty close to a track tire.

KDW is a wet/dry tire...KD is high performance Dry tire with a 200 tread wear rating..oh yea and the KDW is a 300 Tread wear rating. The KDW you will get longer life out of than the KD. The KD is a great Autocross tire, even holds up pretty well at the drag strip for stock and lightly modified cars..I run both tires the KDW for everyday use and KD's for autocross I'm very happy with the performance of the tire and how well the heat up in the hot laps

Sweet, thanks! :thumb: Think I'm leaning towards the KD's . They're priced in between the KDW's and the Pilot Sport PS2's, but should do a decent job of "double duty" I hope?? ;) (street/track)

My KD's did well and they were on my daily driver. Never hydoplaned with them. But I still prefer the Falken RT-615 over them. Just for the fact that they hook better cold. The KD needed some heat to hook.

I've tried quite a few different tires and the BFGs are my pick for best overall right now. I'm currently running my second set of g-force T/A KDWs (don't really know how they differ from the Comp T/As). Never tried Michelins on my Camaros, they are supposed to be a great tire but you'll pay out the nose for a set.

You can say that again!! I just picked up a set of C5 Z06 replicas (17x9.5 / 18x10.5) and have priced out the KDWs/KDs & PS2s ... with tax, CDN$, ~$1550, ~$1950 & ~$2150 respectively for the set!! Although I've been in a Z06 on the track, in the rain, with PS2's, and it still hooked hard!!

I love my BFG KDW's. Apparently my posi was nearing death with my old tires, and when I put on the KDW's that was the end of my posi. I couldn't believe how they grabbed, I will definitly buy again.

another thing with the KD's Its been noticed the wider the better and harder they grab..ofcourse when there warm. I run 315's on the rear and in wet conditions the suck..obviously...but with 11 inches of contact patch I love them to death

I have loved my Nitto555. I used to run Bridgestone Potenza RE730's but they discontinued them. The Nitto's are nice. Good traction in the rain and good traction on the street.

I have the Firestone Firehawk Wide Ovals in 275/40/17 and love them. They stick to the road really good, and hook good. Then again, I only have 2.73's :(

I was looking at the T1R, but read posts on several other forums stating that the sidewalls were soft.

Whats your take on the sidewalls?
