I have AFR 195 LT4 heads and they say that .550" max lift is just that max lift . I'd like to go with a bigger cam with my LT1 396ci .
Question :
What needs to get done to install a biger cam (overall max lift to .650" )
1) bigger springs
2) retainers
3) ???
and do you need to check for valve to piston clearance ?

Yes, if you dont check clearance you may punch a hole in the piston. Duration will play a big role in wether or not you hit.

When you find a spring, it will list companion parts, installed spring height etc

Don't understand the desire to run .650 lift on a head that is pretty much down and out by .6???
AFR offers a spring upgrade for mech rollers. Personally, I'd run a solid, keep the lift under .6 and run a spring with 160 lbs at the seat and 400 lbs over the nose. Probably something around 245/250 .580/.580.
Always check valve to piston clearance. Better safe than sorry.

Don't forget if your going to be running high spring weights. you have to get lifters that can handle it. stock type LT1 lifters will only handle 350-360# at max lift and not much over 125-130#'s when closed.
