U think i will pass MA emissions.....

i am planning on doing emissions friendly longtubes with dual cutouts right after the collectors....then true duals that dump at the axle..... no cats.... will i pass??

I think it would be really hard to pass the treadmill test with no cats. I'm not aware of anyone doing it.

Per MA law, I believe exhaust pipes must exit at the stock location. Some shops are more anal than others as far as that type of thing goes. Ask around for a "friendly" inspection station. If you ask around the CZ28 Board, do everyone a favor and keep the shop's actual name and location limited to PM's. Also, be sure of who you are sharing this info with. Gotta protect the guilty ya know:D

I say your best bet is to keep with a CARB approved set up and use electric cut outs at the place of your choosing. That way you get the best of both worlds. Might be a bit more costly but it beats being flagged as failing emits and/or being cited on the street later.

The only other way is to have 2 different tunes available for your PCM. 1 tune for inspection time and the other for as soon as you leave with your sticker. This type of tune can be programmed to pass emits, even without cats. Again, it may be costly but....

Good luck with whatever you choose to do:cool:

Do you think he can pass the treadmill with no cats with just a tune? I know guys have done it with the old idle test, but the treadmill is a lot harder. I barely passed the treadmill with a pretty radical tune (halved my timing in the relevant areas) but I did have heads and a small cam (in my sig). This was back before the 96+ moved on to the OBD2 test. Perhaps the allowable emissions levels are different for 95 & 96?

i dn...im gonna go without a tune...with 2 high flow cats...and hope for the best...this guy is foreign...and my dad shoots the **** with him every time he goes down there..... hopefully he lets me pass....this past year he gave me a sticker without even having my registration on me :)

it's all about clean combustion. As long as they mess with the fuel parameters and whatever throughout the RPM band of the testing range he should be fine. My buddy is an ASE Master Tech. He agrees.

Heck I'd fail ya for making me get on my stomach to hook the exhaust up for the treadmill test :D

It's a balancing act between HC and NOx and I'm not sure you can do it without cats. If you lock the car in open loop and lean it out, HC will drop. However that causes combustion temps to rise and thus NOx wil rise as well.

All cams have an overlap period between the intake and the exhaust valves while both are open. Therefore no matter how perfect your combustion is, you will always been getting some HC's right from the intake out the exhaust.

hmmm so just some dual cats should be ok?

I don't disagree with what you are saying. I'm just saying that he's a certified emits expert and he thinks it's doable. Personally I'd still go with the legal set up and just add elec cut outs.

The slick route is with the SLP system. They come with removable cats. All you do is install the supplied straight pipe after the sniff test. Really slick is adding the cut outs to the straight pipe.

my plan is to put my cutouts on right after the collectors on my longtubes with clamps.....so then when the sniff test comes around im gonna replace them with cats.....sounds doable right?
