2008 Cars to automatically detect speedlimit

Mr. Orwell your car is ready...

I assume this feature will show up in european luxury cars first.

Re: 2008 Cars to automatically detect speedlimit

The system, expected to debut in as-yet-undisclosed cars in 2008, includes an onboard camera that reads speed limit signs.
So what happens when some one spray paints a "1" in front on the 55mph? or turns 35hph into 85mph?

"Honestly, My car was doing the posted speed limit officer"

EDIT: Actually it would be sweet though if I could have the car automatically stay 7-8mph over the speed limit.

Don't like the sounds of that.. but if I were ever forced to buy such a car, there would be some immediate "weight reduction" done to it.

check this out in the article
After it spots a sign, the system uses the car's navigation system to check whether the number it detected is plausible: Should the speed limit really be 55 in this urban zone?

I hope my future wife and I get to the hospital a day early if one of us needs serious attention!

The last thing we need is one more car option that takes peoples minds away from driving. Most people don't pay enough attention to the road as it is, having one more electronic nanny in a car won't help things, if anything it will make matters worse.

Does the car know when I cross the border from Michigan into Ontario?

Suddenly I'm allowed to do 100 mph!

Such technology works perfectly with "stop-and-go" distance-following speed control, which itself is probably one of our best hopes to reduce traffic congestion. I'm not going to hold my breath and wait for this forum's members to jump on that bandwagon, though.

Set that cruise control at 7-8 mph over the speed limit, and guess what, your car will stay at 7-8 mph over the speed limit!! Nifty little feature we've had since about the ~60's!

Automatically detect speed limits? Is it going to tell you you're going too SLOW if you're in stop-and-go traffic? And who can HONESTLY say they don't KNOW when they're going above the speed limit?! Sorry, I don't buy it ... sounds stupid .

Um this is going to cause more problems. Can you imagine the amount of tailgating that is going to happen because people can't pass slower cars. I HATE people who tailgate and it's going to get worse. How about more cops and taking people off the road for breaking the rules. Plain and simple. No need for this 1984 Orwellian bull****. But nooooooo...... common sense in today's world doesn't stand a ****ing ice cube's chance in hell.

Yes, it actually will tell you if you're going too slow - that's kinda the whole point of this technology. Combined with stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, the system will adjust the vehicle's speed to various conditions (speed limits, traffic, etc.) far more quickly than most human drivers (the majority of which are inattentive mouthbreathers), the net effect of which is to reduce "rubberbanding" and thus also reduce congestion.

Will some governmental arsehole try to pervert this technology for the sake of the nanny state? Well, almost certainly. But that doesn't mean that the technology itself is without merit.

Re: 2008 Cars to automatically detect speedlimit

So it makes the driving task require even less of the drivers attention span then?

Isn't "lack of attention" behind the wheel already a big enough problem?!

...I know, I know, preaching to the choir!!
