Alright I know there are a few of you guys that have painted your chrome wheels before and I want details on how you did it. I just got my TTII's on and now that the WS6 wheels are off I'd like to get them done CETA style. The reason being is because when winter comes around I'd like to put the stock wheels back on so my TTII's don't turn to sh*t! I have already searched but no one gave specific details on how to do it. I need to know what to sand it with to make the paint/primer stick, what clear, any other prep you think I need, etc.

I know everyone will say powdercoat but there is no one near me that will do it, plus these will just be winter rims so I'm trying to keep it cheap. Give me any tips you have.

By the way we do have a paint shop that mixes paint for all the body shops around here so I can get automotive clear from them. But do you all recommend the wheel paint from like autozone or automotive paint from the shop?

i forgot what grit sandpaper i used(ill try to get back to you on it) but you MUST sand the hell out of them. there cannot be any shine to them at all. tape them off with the most expensive tape you can. talk to people and see what they like best. make sure you clean them first, then tape, then sand, and keep sanding till they are dull looking. then i sprayed some regular outdoor gloss black from Ace Hardware on mine and they came out great. make sure to get the back of the spokes good too, sometimes its hard to get a good angle on the deeper parts of the spokes but keep on eye all around them and youll be fine.

ok i remember i used 220 grit. i sanded them down a good bit, and it turned out like crap. sanded down again all the paint i just sprayed on and got it back to chrome, then sanded them till there was NO shine at all. you cand sand these enough is what i learned.lol if you dont do enough, the paint wont bond worth a damn. try to tape as best you can, it sucks getting it to stick to chrome but its possible. i havent used clear but you can. it chips if you hit it with a wrench or something like when i was taken off the lug nuts a few days ago, other than that, no problems with road pebbles or anything. good luck, got any more Qs feel free.

One of the guys in our club is a painter and I had asked him a couple of months ago about painting my chrome ZR1's and he mentioned that there is an etching type spray that you can spray on the chrome to help the primer stick..

I'll see if I can PM him and ask him exactly what the stuff was and the procedure he would use to paint chrome wheels.
