z28lovr 10-16-2006, 10:28 PM im sure this has been posted many times before and beat to death but i was wondering if anyone knew if there would be a possiblity of putting down a down payment really early to ensure i could get one almost as soon as they went to the dealers.
landstuhltaylor 10-16-2006, 10:35 PM if you pay those whores enough they'll do anything for you
z28lovr 10-16-2006, 10:47 PM yea, its just that i dont want to pay "enough" i would rather pay a fair amount. now that i think about it, that will probably never happen :(

Yes, it has. Search for it, and you will see what people think. I don't think it is a smart move.
95 Z/28 LT1 10-17-2006, 07:51 AM I say go for it. There's honest dealers out there, you just have to look for them.
Find a dealer that will accept the money in the form of a down payment, will give you guaranteed MSRP, and make sure you get what ever else you want out of the deal in writing to CYA.

All you are gonna do is encourage the dealer to jck the prices up if everyone is trying to be the first. There will be plenty of Camaro's to go around, it's not a limited production vehicle like the Solstice, if demand goes up GM will build more. I just don't get the me first mentality, do you really want the problems and dealer visits that come with having a vehicle built during the first months of it's production life? I made the mistake of buying a 2004 Nissan Titan and it was the first year of production and it had all kinds of quality issues, I eventually traded it in after only 6 months for a Dodge because the quality was pitiful(the rattles and squeeks drove me nuts). What's sad is the trade in on it was actually really good because of the perception of Japanese vehicles.
Casull 10-17-2006, 11:54 AM My 2 cents, find a good dealer once the time gets closer that is starting a list. I have already asked around here and there are some that have mentioned that they will be taking names (NO DEPOSIT REQUIRED) once they have an idea of when it will be coming out.
Take the money you would otherwise fork over to a dealer for a deposit and put it in a money market acount/CD/Low Risk Mutual Fund (Those based on secure investments like bonds and t-bills) that will give you around a 5% return so that you have a fatter downpayment. Dishing out money this soon for a Camaro is just not a smart move.

I think that is the best way to go, IMO.
We have talked about this in our Podcasts here and there, and I know we talked about it here:

I personally feel that spending any extra to get one sooner than the next guy is not feasable. No matter how close to being the first one to have one you get, you still won't be the VERY first, and there will be MANY immediately after you to get one, making that money even less well spent.
I hope no one here spends tons extra to get one quickly and then seeing someone else who got one a few days later without paying that extra money unnecessarily. Again, just IMO.

Say you put a $1000 deposit down 2 years before production. $1000*.05*2=$100. $100 over 2 years isn't really that much IMO (and yes, I realize I'm ignoring the compunding interest because I'm not getting into how often interest is paid).
A dealer that doesn't charge anything to be placed on their waiting list would be even better though.
I think that is the best way to go, IMO.

There's always the issue of spending extra above and beyond the price of the car to get one sooner, or spending money earlier as a downpayment.
In my mind, spending money simply to allow me to be able to buy one early wouldn't be worth it because that's the same as paying a dealer markup.
However, spending $500-1000 a couple years in advance to get one of the early cars is much more worth it as long as that money goes towards the price of the car (and the rest of the deal is acceptable e.g. MSRP, fully refundable, etc.).
I can wait. I'll probably wait 6 mos. or so after they come out, then buy 1.

Yes you are right. Even with compounding interest and an assumed rate of 5% you would have just under $105 extra in your pocket. I guess what it really comes down to are priorities. If you absolutely MUST have one of the first Camaros then $105 is a small price to pay. Personally I would rather let my money earn interest and then use that money to help pay for a cat back exhaust or a CAI system. It is all in the perspective I guess.
z28lovr 10-17-2006, 04:18 PM the car actually isnt for me. its for someone else who had a camaro when they were younger and has wanted another one for a long time now but hasnt found what they were looking for. they saw the concept and like fell in love with it so they want one as soon as they can get it. they dont care if they have to pay just a little extra to get it.

If thats the case God bless. I would look for a dealer with a list for the Camaro you didnt have to pay to be on. That way if the first Camaro in the door is a V6 you didnt waste money.
