brianchevy 10-05-2006, 10:23 PM Guys,
I am SO excited about the new camaro that I'm ready to start saving out of each paycheck to buy one when it hits the street. I have looked at pictures of the concept and I cannot tell about the configuration of the back seat.
Since I am a 39 year old with 3 kids, I will HAVE to have a benchseat and 3 seatbelts back there in order to ensure that I can buy one. It won't be the daily kid hauler (that's my 05 Tahoe), but it could be for weekend fun...
In fact, if the Mustang GT 05 had a 3rd seat belt back there I would be driving one of those now... OH BOY am I glad I waited...
SO, now to answer, is there going to be a third seat belt (albeit a small one) in the middle??? Please GM, at least give me the OPTION of a bench seat in the rear so I can have a third belt.
it will expand the market to all us dads with the typical 2.2 kids(american average).....

VladimirSteel 10-06-2006, 12:25 AM no, camaro has never had 3 seats in the rear, they wont start now.

I've seen 1st gens with three seat belts in back.
Capn Pete 10-06-2006, 02:52 AM Brian, you'd best hope that they bring out a GTO and perhaps have 3 seats in the back of it ;). 5-seater Camaro? Ha! It was barely a 4-seater as it was!! ;)
Seriously though, the pics look like it'll be 2 + 2 seating, as before . SO, in that case, leave your wife at home, and bring your 3 kids for a ride in the car :). Guaranteed they won't "back-seat drive" like your wife would, except to say "can we do that again, Dad?! " :D

I hear ya on that one! When the moms away, the dads will play........

Dude, I am so with you on that one!
I'm a dad with three kids of my own, too! Each summer we spend time (when mom is at work) by pulling the T-tops, then driving over to the railroad tracks and watching the freight trains from 20 feet away. We've got better than a 90% success rate at getting the engineers to wave to us. My kids stand up through the T-tops and wave at them.
However it's a bummer that we can't cruise as a whole family. I miss doing that.
Camaro will probably be a 2+2. If that is the case then it would be wise on GM to make the GTO a 5 seater.
This is why I only have 2 kids :)
Ron78Z&01SS 10-06-2006, 10:19 AM no, camaro has never had 3 seats in the rear, they wont start now.
Uhhhhh...............wrong there sport.
They had three belts in the back bench seat of 68 & 69 and some 67's.
I don't think a bench seat in back is "sporty" enough nowadays, so I'd kind of doubt a third belt in back would be available.
brianchevy 10-06-2006, 11:00 AM I didn't expect them to use First Gen Rear seat belts, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I know that GM sometimes watches the enthusiasts for feedback. If that is the case, then at least 2 of us here would like a bench rear with 3 seat belts. I know it's not 100% functional, but it would open up sales to many dads with 3 kids.
So, if you would like to see a bench rear seat with 3 belts, please reply to this thread with a +1 so we can build a case.
EDIT: Oh i forgot to mention. Some of you single guys out there might like a bench rear bench seat too.... for other more adult and obvious reasons.... Nookie in the camaro??? oh yeah. :)

Good Ph.D 10-06-2006, 11:48 AM Wont happen, dont see what the point would be anyway...
You cant fit two teens back there so I doubt you could get three adolescents in there.
Even if your children are pretty small how long would it even be useful?

Are you sure about that? Most of the middle rear seat belts I've seen in 67 and 68s were owner added. 69? Maybe. But I'm not sure about the first two years.
Ron78Z&01SS 10-06-2006, 01:38 PM Don't have time now, but I'll find the option code and post a link (unless someone beats me to it). :)

I just saw my friends' original '69 last week, with a bench seat and three seat belts.
posaune 10-06-2006, 05:17 PM Could be a good option to help add sales. Otherwise, anyone with three kids, who can't afford the camaro as a third car could be left out.
How much and how hard would it be to make it an option?

Keep in mind that those rear 1st gen benches are still Camaro backseats, meaning that getting three humans back there is.....ummm....optimistic. Also, those are simple lap belts, not the more complex lap shoulder belts used today.
Bottom line: Forget anything else other than 2+2 seating.
posaune 10-06-2006, 05:25 PM it wouldn't be for the guy trying to hual around 4 buddies. It is for the young family with three smaller children (most of whom fit in the back of a camaro)

Smaller children require carseats or at least boosters if they're alittle older. Good luck getting three of those back there.
Good Ph.D 10-06-2006, 06:15 PM Exactly, you can divide the back into five if you want... You still arent putting two fullsize people back there. There pintsized ones isn't looking good either.
brianchevy 10-06-2006, 10:28 PM In this day of the MONSTER SUV, I remember the days when a family sedan worked just fine. I have 3 children and we haul them around in the Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with a bench seat and 3 belts (middle is just a lap belt).
I don't subscribe to the Ford Excursion or bigger mentality -- their just small kids, they can buckle in the back with no problems. (12,12 and 8) now, but once they are 15, we have a problem, but then -- it won't matter they'll be driving anyway.
just thinking optimistically about my new camaro..

Everything (and more!) you ever wanted to know about 1st gen Iteriors. Or just click on "Seat Belt Options" and go straight to the exciting stuff.
toegead93 10-07-2006, 08:42 AM All Camaro's have a fifth seat, it's called the 'hump' Only thing is it doesn't have a seat belt, but a belt isn't required. If one can actualy fit on the hump they are so tightly squeezed against the passenegers on each side and the backs of the front seats that they are secure. The only downside to this seat is rubbing your head on the roof, some people believe the constant friction between the scalp and the carpeted roof leads to premature balding, although GM denies this.
Lt1 and Ls1 10-07-2006, 08:13 PM My 67 camaro has a bench seat with 3 seatbelts. I like it like that.

That's a downward spiral man ;) ... I now understand what led to your current dilemma in the first place :p. Besides, the front seats recline far enough to do the deed anyway :thumb:. The back seat of a Camaro will never be on par with some of the more spacious back seats of large sedans, so there's no point trying to make it better anyway  ;).

I managed to fit 8 people in my '82 Camaro.
Me driving
2 in the passenger seat
2 in the rear passenger side
2 in the rear driver side
1 in the trunk
LOL I do remember a time or two when someone sat on the hump in the rear.
5thgen69camaro 10-08-2006, 09:50 PM The 1st gen did have a bench seat but it was nothing more than a box spring. The hump was still there it just came level with the seat so there was just no cusioning over that area so it was flat across. Think fold out sofa with a driveshaft tunnel in your girls back. obviously it could be done. That also means the seat was higher than later gens bringing it closer to the roof.
I tried to make a list of things on the 4th gen(Long Front overhang, Long heavy bulky doors not parkinglot friendly, Windshield covering engine etc.) that I thought added to the car going on hiatus that could be improved. The one complaint I had about the 4th gen that I didnt back up was no usable back seats. I also thought that knee room was better in 1st gen but later realized that 1st gen front seats dont recline. The more I think about it the more I wonder if 4th gen seats were somewhat close to 1st. The only thing is you sit low so its a little awkward. The measurements are close between 1st and 4th. That doesnt mean they cant be improved, I just think that what they come up with will be a good use of the space.

USA1Camaro 10-08-2006, 10:03 PM I really don't care if it's a 2+2 or not. I don't plan on hauling the clan around in the Camaro.
If they bring out the Holden as a V8 RWD sedan, that will be the "family" car. A fun to drive family car.
Some guys will rip all the seat out except for the drivers seat.

I agree the rear seats in the Concept are nice looking. And as much as I like how the center console extends back and 'merges' with the rear seats, I highly doubt that would work well if anyone is actually sitting back there.
It restricts the rear passengers abilit to shift and accomodate the front seat being practically touching (or definitely touching) their knees.
And I always liked the 4th Gens seating position, and never had a problem with the long doors myself.

agreed. I assumed it was extended to cover the driveshaft tunnel being a show car.
JCS30TH 10-09-2006, 01:05 PM I've seen 1st gens with three seat belts in back.
I was going to say pretty much the same thing.
Plague 10-09-2006, 09:21 PM well, maybe a better question would be, who would not buy a camaro if it had a rear seat for 3? wouldn't rule it out for me. I think I might even like it.
blackrat 10-09-2006, 09:45 PM the car cant be everything to everyone. theres a reason they made cars like the bbody impalas and thats for situations like this. any comparisons to the first gens having 3 seatbelts is null because they had to abide to 40 year old regs. its a little differant now.
Plague 10-09-2006, 11:01 PM what current sedan would compare to a camaro through with 3 seats? an 303hp certainly would not.

charger rt or srt. and it could fit 5 comfortable too. you trade off with the weight gain and handling loss though.
dave_z28 10-14-2006, 08:35 PM All Camaro's have a fifth seat, it's called the 'hump' Only thing...
its funny you say this, because my moms bf has a 2002 ss vert (35th ann) but anywayz, hes got one kid, and i have a sister (so a total of 5) and when we all go out together, his kid sits on the hump, and we cross the 2 belts in the back, to the opposite buckle, and it works.
skibbez93z 11-11-2006, 03:18 PM u have had a hump rider before (in the 30th)... the most to ever fit has been 6 in the 93 once.... that will never happen again......
romoranger 11-14-2006, 07:50 PM i put four girls in the back of mine one time when my car was still there for DD duty..... it was sweet :D
PaintBallR 01-12-2007, 06:39 PM I think a bench in the back is a better idea in general. If you have 2+2 seating, the 2 in the back will be alot more comfotable with a bench rather than 2 little seats that thier butts just fit in. Or You could have a add on that you can place on top of the hump to make it a bench when you have to take that 5th person.
I'm all for a bench in the back.
Mjolnir 01-16-2007, 06:52 PM +1
Although I have five kids, so it would mostly just cut down on the arguing about who goes with dad in the Camaro and who goes with mom in the soccer van.
67speeda 02-03-2007, 10:52 AM 67's have seatbelts!
guess i forgot to put them in......
camarolvr69 02-04-2007, 05:02 PM whats the point of a bench seat? the people who sit on it would fly around at any sort of speed.
