what to look for?

I'm going to look at a 95 z and was wandering what to look for as far as potential problems. At this point all that I know about the car is 120k miles and its an auto, supposed to be in great shape. What is the code for posi/373 rear end? Somebody told me but now I can't remember. Any and all advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: what to look for?

The factory didn't offer 3.73s, but they did offer 2.73s and 3.23s.

3.23s are the better option for performance. The code for them is GU5. Another way to check if you forget the code: the gear selector only allows you to select 1st gear in a car equipped with 3.23s. The cars equipped with 2.73s only go as low as 2nd gear when you look at the center console.

As for problems, check for an oil leak at the back of the intake manifold. That's a somewhat common leak. Also, if that's the original transmission, pay close attention to it. 4L60Es generally don't last long beyond 100,000 miles unless they've been meticulously maintained and babied.

Check the water pump (closely) for any signs of leaking. If it looks like it has been leaking, be prepared to replace not only that, but the optispark distributor mounted directly behind and underneath it. Not exactly the most brilliant design idea. Anyway, optispark and wetness do not play well together. In fact, with 120,000 miles on the clock, if it's the original opti, I would give serious consideration to replacement anyway. If you are handy with a wrench you can do it yourself for $300-ish and a few hours of your time. If a dealer or mechanic does it, double the price at least. Might as well replace the water pump right away too since it has to come off to replace opti. $130-180 for that depending on source. These cars are fun as he!! though !

Thanks for the advice, personally I would rather have a 6 spd., but in the interest of marital bliss I guess it will have to be auto.

Just give it a thorough inspection like you would do with any other car. Check all the fluids really well and all the other drivetrain, supension, and braking systems for any abnormal damage, wear, or leaks. As mentioned above, the Optispark is one of the pitfalls of the LT1. Another common problem is the rear intake manifold oil leak. Both are pretty straightforward repairs though.

Re: what to look for?

I loved my '94 Z. I put @144k miles on it before I sold it for something different. I bought it with 68k miles on it and put 70k trouble free miles on it before the A4 trans finally died from extreme abuse. Great engine, good trans, handled well, accelerated well, 22mph at 80+ mph. Buy a car cover to keep it protected when you're not driving it. Dont plan on driving it in the snow with stock width tires on it, ZERO traction in a 1/2" of snow. Good luck.

2 things,

1> After a test drive, pull the dipstick for the tranny and see if it smells burnt.

2> Including crawling under the car, be meticulous about searching for body damage.
