Hello. I have a 95 z28 convertible and am in the process of getting a 98 trans am convertible. I am wondering and have heard this but heres the question.
Do 0-60 and quarter mile times change between having a coupe a ttop or a convertible fbody? Thanks in advance

Im pretty sure the coupe and t-top would be about the same but a vert would be a little slower due to the added weight. I think verts are about 100lbs heavier but idk for sure.

and I've heard the rag top adds a little extra drag. I know with the top down at 130 mph, I had a friggin STV focus keeping up with me!

Yea knew verts were around 100-150lbs heavier dont think that would make too much of a diff. but drag is what i was worried about. im just wondering the differences it makes on quarter mile and 0-60 really because i cant seem to find anyone who knows

Well they say for every 100 lbs you remove, you run about .1 sec quicker in the quarter mile. So im guessing verts are .1-.2 seconds slower than coupes. Most drag strips require the top to be up, or the t-tops on and the windows up in order to race anyway so drag shouldnt be that much of an issue.

Some of the fastest/quickest 4th Gens have been convertibles....... Black LS1 T/A running 7's, 30th SS running 8's, etc. Does make one wonder how much the extra weight and the aerodynamics slowed them down though.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah, plus having a vert is great. It'd be very hard for me to go back to a regular coupe

Where would you find a 4650lb trans am  I think the LS1 cars are a little lighter due to the aluminum block. The 98+ f-bodys are faster by a good margin though.

My bad meant 3450 for the 95z28 and 3650 for the 98trans am. trans am has 30hp and 10torque on the z28

i give the 98 T/A the win by ~.60 sec

The HP hatings are underrated for 98+ Fbods.

Yea thing is that my z28 is an automatic and trans am manual, im young so i dont really know the answers to some questions but heres another question. How big of a difference does having a manual over an automatic in 0-60 and quarter mile make? i know it depends on how good of a start and shifter the person is but lets just say for reference...

The chassis on a 'vert is a lot less rigid. If you are planning a true hi-po setup you need significant chassis reinforcements. When I had a stock chassis and "only" ~400rwho is would walk sideways under hard acceleration. You could see the car flex. Welded KB SFC's and a 6-point weld-in bar solved that.

Automatics seem to be the fastest cars in the 1/4 mile mister symbol. But stock for stock, the manual will win (driving helps too). The manuals eat around 15% of the horsepower through the drivetrain, and automatics eat up more. The thing that makes automatics faster, is when they're modded. Take a stock LS1 Z28, put drag radials on, and a good stall converter on and they have been known to lift the front tires off the ground by an inch or so. If you want to know more about stall converters, look it up on www.howstuffworks.com
