I just bought a 84 Z28 with a 383 stroker as a project but im considering just selling it and buying an lt1 z28, but first i wanted to see how much it would run me to fix stuff on this one. The motor needs a rebuild im told because it blows blue smoke out on start up or when i stomp on it, but the motor runs like a champ other than that. Also I need a tranny rebuild, its a T5 and the first and second gear synchros are going out, in first it pops out of gear one or two times when i first get going(but when im slowing down as long as i downshift to first before coming to a stop it wont pop back out), and also sometimes second gear makes a grinding sound and i put it in neutral, then back into second and usually doesnt do it again and if it does i just go to third. Anyone know how much these rebuilds would cost roughly? Thanks.

More than likely if it smokes when you shift and start-up, it's only the valve seals. Try that first. They are 30$ and are the easiest to do next to a complete rebuild. But I rebuilt my 305 w/ all hi-perf. parts (cam, headers, race oil pump etc..) for like.. $800 I think it was. But try the seals first since that's a common sbc problem :) As for the tranny, don't know too terribly much there :)

Figure about $1k for the motor and $1k for the tranny with $350 for the clutch. The t-5 can be upgraded with better hard parts to around 450ft lbs.

Don't spend money unless you have to, do a compression and leakdown test to see what condition the motor is in first.

I can almost GUARANTEE you it's the valve-seals :) But like the guy above me said, you can get better synchro's and whatnot for the tranny to beef it up, but that's about all I know on that :)
