Tired of getting stuck on speed bumps!!

My 2000 SS has SLP longtubes on and is constantly dragging across speed bumps, bumpy roads, and anything more than an inch off the ground (ok maybe 2 inches! :p )

I want to get a pair of headers that doesn't get stuck on everything I drive over. Can I stay with longtubes or do you have to go to mid's or shorties? My setup is very simple - full exhaust - all SLP gear, headers, cats, catback - and intake.

I dont' want a custom exhaust that I have to re-mortgage my house for. Something simple, clean, and effective. I am hoping to stay in the neighborhood of 1K for all this (parts and installation - I am not doing this myself). After searching it seems everybody has something good or bad to say about every brand - Pace Setter, Hookers, SLP, etc.

Are the longtubes from other companies going to give me more ground clearance than the SLP's or do I need to go to mid length?

Well, considering SLP's are the WORST fit for any LS1 header, I think you can pretty much go anywhere else and have better fitment. That said, I have heard nothing but good things about Pace Setter on their fitment.

They fit up to the block great and they dont tend to leak like a few others so they "fit" great, they just hang an extra 1"-1 1/2" below other brands. Also, SLP's do flow great, but for the price brandnew and the way they hang down low, the benifits kind of cancel out.

Everyone who hates SLP's always goes to either kooks or Pacesetter. You cannot beat the price of pacesetter, especially with your budget. Then, get on the marketplace section and make a quick 300 dollars off your old SLP's.

Are you referring to the SLP's or the Pacesetters? I know the SLP's hang lower than other brands which is partly why I keep getting caught on speedbumps and why I want to switch to a product that doesn't hang as low.

I inherited the SLP longtubes when I bought the car, so whatever I switch to will be my first header purchase. I just want the headers to fit underneath the car and not on top of the road I am trying to drive over.

Thanks for the idea of selling mt SLP's for a few hundred in the used section - could offset some of the cost.

I've got pacesetter longtubes and offroad ypipe and the ground clearance is at least the same as stock, it actually might be better

I don't know about the LS1 Pacesetters, but my LT1 Pacesetters are pure garbage. I personally would never buy any Pacesetter product again.

I got Edelbrock headers and ORY on my 2000 Z28 and they fit perfect and have just as good or better ground clearance than with stock manifolds/y-pipe. They're pretty affordable too.

Preach it BROTHA!!! :metal:....testify!!

Simple... COMPLETLEY AVOID speed bumps... and avoid busted up roads, and it's fine... and gas station fill caps..... and anything not flush w/ the surface fo the road..

But doOd, you've got it EASY... trust me... I'm lowered... MY cats and Y-pipe trip on EVERYTHING!!!!! -I mean that too... cockroaches, crtickets, pebbles... you name it...

I bent two exh clams on my collector to cat, bacause my foot got the best of me. Was racin a WRX over the bridge and bottomed out HARD. Was over a mound in the road.......who'd a thunk it...

For fitment most of the brands are pretty good, and much better than SLP for clearance. Top quality are arguably Kooks and QTP, after that it is pretty much your preference - slip fit or flange, type of y pipe etc., and the quality of the coating becomes important.

Hmmm:think:. My friend bought and installed a brand new set of Pacesetters on his '96 T/A a year or so ago, and the quality of them seemed pretty good to me? The finish looked good, welds looked good, and they felt "heavy" (I know people want to avoid extra weight, but IMO, that meant they weren't cheap, thin-walled pieces of junk?;)). I'm sure they're still lighter than factory manifolds though!?

I would never run SLP's on my car . If someone GAVE them to me, I'd sell them and buy something else. They hang way too low, and they don't even "look" like normal LT's:think:. The collector on them is very short compared to most LT's which typically have between ~8" - 12" of collector, and I remember somebody complaining about the gains they got with their SLP headers ... thought the #'s were disappointing .

As far as what to get, that's pretty much already been answered above .

Thats what I have on my 94 Z. I was very happy with everything. Hell even my plug access is better than a buddy who has hooker headers in a 96 TA.

I think it was me complaining about the gains...

I was dissapointed. I got 38hp from a dang LS1 Edit... After I installed all my mods.. All I have now for engine stuff is what I had then... nothing new.
