ouch!- At least the Charger had RWD and a V8 option that help offset its 'so-so' appearance but this thing just looks bad.

I like it alot better than the Sebring.

I don't like the idea of copying the Charger (dilutes the Charger's unique styling), but overall, not bad.

Another attempt at small, medium and large "styling"....and I use the word "styling" loosely here.

Did their "stylists" just get out of college or what? Amateur at best.

I thought the new Sebring was semi-unique looking, and pretty classy for the market segment.

This, while not bad looking, just blends in with the crowd, even though it is trying really really hard not to.

What a shame to use that nameplate again. The old one atleast looked pretty decent and car-like. Sometimes I think the design of the entire auto industry has just gone to sh**...

If that thing had a Bowtie on the front, everyone here would be screaming "what a bada** looking car. It has all the visual excitement the Malibu doesn't have."

FWIW, the front isn't as blunt-nosed as the Charger, so IMO it looks a little better that way but without question, its a Charger ripoff. With that being said? I kinda like the thing...hope the interior quality is up to snuff. Based on what I've seen from the Caliber and Charger, I doubt it is...

At least the styling is cohesive, something that can't be said about the Sebring. Personally, I don't think it's that bad... though polarizing, it shows some consistant design direction.

Seriously doubt it.

I didn't read any newspaper reports on any GM people getting their "nuts" kicked when the new Malibu came out.

jrp4uc is right. Opinions would be far more positive if it had a bowtie on it.

This, while not bad looking, just blends in with the crowd, even though it is trying really really hard not to.

I'd probally have a better opinion of the Sebring if I didn't know the design was based on the Aeroflite concept. But knowing that tidbit, then looking at the execution leaves me kind of cold.

On the positive side, I think the interior design is fantastic. :)

I'm not saying y'all are gonna like it, but there is no question that some pretty sweet designs from rival manufacturers get chewed up and spit out on this board. I expect that, but still...it looks like a mean, sweet car to me for its price class.

It should have the same engines as the Sebring...174hp 2.4 Hyundai/Chrysler 4 popper, 190hp 2.7 Chrysler V6, 235hp (Mistubishi???) 3.5 V6...

Looks like ****. The LX cars can pull of the brickish styling because they have the road presence to do so... Put that on a smaller car and it looks like you had a lot of Lego blocks laying around...

The old Stratus was WAY better.

This is a case where less is more. The 300/Charger have already lost much of their distinction because there are a billion on the road. Start putting that on every car in the lineup its gonna get old real quick.

Just a side note to all who hate the design, it's great that Chrysler took a risk with the Charger-like design. Personally, though I think it looks OK, I wish they didn't make a mini-Charger for the reason I mentioned before.

That said, most automakers take a safe approach when it comes to their bread & butter cars, which the Stratus and Avenger will be for Chrysler. Though most will want a Charger/300, it's going to be the Stratus/Avenger that's going to need to be the core of sales, both fleet & retail.

Great design IMO needs to be risky, and create love-it/hate-it camps.

Even if there are people who hate the look of something, as long as you have a group who are equally adamant about loving the looks, even if the haters outnumber the fans, it's going to be a success and owners are going to beam about their car to others. :)

But now this styling theme is getting old REAL fast. The Charger and Magnum were unique, but now it seems as if they have mini versions as well. Wheres the variety? Do they want all their cars to look the same?

I see what Guy is getting at, most people are gonna want the charger/300 but the avenger/sebring will be more in their price range so they'll take the cheaper the car that looks like the more expensive one. I'm not a fan of the styling cause it looks to much like scrunched up charger, this will probably come out wrong but it looks too much for the car that it is.

Branden,
We have never been known to smoke the ganja, but I will say one thing...after going over August's sales performance the other day, I did want to head to the local tavern for a stiff drink. And yes, I was sober when I made the comment about the Avenger's looks...I personally like it.

unvc,
I totally agree with you there...I had an '04 Stratus R/T coupe for my second or third demo (I get a new one every 60 days, because I drive 600 miles a week!!!), and while I love the 300M I have now, and especially loved the 2 300Cs I've had, that Stratus coupe was probably one of the more underrated cars made in the past 5 years. All the good things about the Eclipse (yes, there were a few things!!!) without the ugly body. The interior was crap, but for the $$$? I think it was a nice car...

Jason E
09-06-2006, 07:42 AM
Oh, and for the record...there is CURRENTLY no 2 door Avenger planned, but that could supposedly change. We all know how Trevor Creed appears to be doing a 180 on 2 door models ;)

Whatever happens, there will be no Sebring coupe...

Jerry, thanks for posting the side-by-side with the current Malibu. The shape is more similar than I realized.

The first thing I thought of when I saw it was the Cobalt 4-door, which I think looks a bit awkward.

It looks good enough to sell. I wouldn't buy one, but I'm not in the market, so my opinion is irrelevant.

That's the thing with high styled cars. They DO get old fast. On the flip side, low keyed understated cars last longer. The unfortunate thing is the more stylish the car, the more often it needs to be restyled.

The 300, while still an eyecatcher, is about halfway to the stale mark, while Ford can probally sell the Five Hundred (with grille & light changes) pretty much forever.

Ironically, the 300 is going to be restyled next year while the Five Hundred is, in fact, going to get a new grille and lights. :)

Of course with all of the special editions they've done for the Charger, you think Dodge would do an "IROC" Avenger? ;) While whoever's photochopping, maybe he can work on that too.

The Charger looked really awkward in 2D, but I like it quite a bit in 3D. This one looks similarly awkward in the rear quarter, but I look forward to seeing it in person.

Now the Sebring ... hmm, not sure about the looks of that one. I'm surprised they carried over the Crossfire design theme, especially since that car didn't seem to catch on. The concept car was eye catching (in a good way) though, Aeroflight?
