Ford sales tumble in August
Truck sales sink 20 percent, overall sales down 12 percent for No. 2 U.S. automaker.

September 1 2006: 12:27 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Ford Motor Co. reported Friday that sales of its key light truck models plunged 20 percent in August.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker said car sales rose 8.5 percent from a year earlier.

But high gasoline prices hit sales of pickups and SUV's, leaving total sales off nearly 12 percent at 255,122 vehicles, about in line with the forecast of sales tracker Edmunds.com. For the year-to-date, U.S. sales are down nearly 10 percent.

IMO I would add the 'Mustang' and 'Fusion' to the list and I would consider adding the new 'Edge' when it comes out next year.

Even with those vehicles added it's still not much.

True, but those vehicles would fall under total vehicles sales (Stang and Fusion) which were down 12%.

Im sure Stang sales and maybe Fusion sales were a few of bright spots for non-truck sales in August for Ford.

yeah they remind me of the IS300's...

They are OK. I still don't see the lure to a fuzion though.

I am not much of a Ford fan, but Fusion is,IMO, the best looking car in it's class.

It certainly is much better looking than Malibu or Stratus.

Of course, as I've said many times over, Ford basically styled the Fusion after the CTS, so it's no wonder I like it, even if it is pretty much a copy cat act, IMO.

15,774 Taurus' last year, 15,468 Fusion this year so don't get out of your pants too quick. That means its selling right beside the datesd Taurus. They still sold 13,263 of them this year too.

Mustang sales are out-freaking-standing tho!

Add the 3.5 to the mix next year.

A bit more of a breakdown....

- Total Ford Car sales were up 12%. Total Truck Sales were down 20%.
- Mustang Sales were up 64% over last year (almost 18,000 sold in August 06 - highest August total since 1979)
- Fusion sales continue to climb, and now sit between Malibu and Cobalt in sales numbers, and just shy of the G6 (well below leading Impala).
- Five Hundred sales were down over 50%.
- Freestyle (-43), Expedition (-31), Escape (-24), and Ranger (-44) were all down significantly. Exploder was down some (-6).
- F-Series was down 15%. That's bread and butter there.

Sometimes I think Ford named their large sedan the Five Hundred (500) as a half-@$$ way to try to trump the Chrysler 300.

For some reason the name 'Five Hundred' makes absolutely no 'sense' for marketing reasons and ironically it's making very little 'cents' for Ford right now;)

500 has ties to a trim level on the Galaxie.

I think with the redesign and the 3.5 entering the picture this car is going to have a much brighter future than it is currently having.

Galaxie would have made more sense IMHO. I would have made it easier for marketing tie-ins in regards to over-all interior space.

Don't EVEN attach GALAXIE to anything in Ford's lineup! :D I had a '65, turquoise blue w/ white top, 390 4bbl, 2 door w/ air! Sweet car, but handled on the mushy side to say the least.

When they went through the whole naming issue with Futura/Fusion I was wondering if they were just going to call it 400 and be done...

Still starts with "F"

My company is laying off nearly 400 people due to Ford's slow down. We supply deisel engines to them.
