saroyan689 08-30-2006, 10:30 PM Has anyone else seen this? The September 06 issue of GM Hightech Performance on the "Off the Wire" page, a letter starts:
"In May, I had the privilege of attending a paid educational program at GM Warren Tech Center. I saw firsthand the new Camaro convertible being built."
The rest of the letter goes on to say that he understands the new Camaro will be built in Australia and not the USA and being a member of the UAW...blah blah- America is great build it here.
Do we have confirmation on a convertible as well?
NOS2006 08-30-2006, 10:37 PM Uh, IDK about confirmation on a convertible, but it was definitely confirmed to be built in Oshawa, not Australia..

That right there should tell you something about the credibility of GMHTP.
....or any other car rag for that matter!

I love GMHTP. I left a rant about them on the cz28.com podcast voice mail. Won an Ipod for "call of the month"
Thanks for being clueless GMHTP.

well.......their record hasn't been -- shall we say -- sterling, lately!
Australia -- ????

When it come to journalism these days, facts are ilrelivant anymore. :(
30thZ286speed 08-31-2006, 12:00 AM Well, one could guess that there might be a convertible concept being prepared for NAIAS coming up in 5 months?
My money is on the convertible not showing up in any form, until after the coupe is in showrooms.

Those are prob some good guesses
detltu 08-31-2006, 01:23 AM The whole safety thing Scott has been touting makes me wonder about the convertible. Will it have to fit the rule of max ratings in all safety tests or does that just apply to the basic design?
PWR-TRIP 08-31-2006, 01:39 AM I just hope the camaros interior is not cheap plastic one. I seriously hope they pay attention to the car in every detail. Mind you though, even the new C6 corvettes have cheap interior. :(
Rob V 08-31-2006, 02:15 AM the new Camaro will be built in Australia and not the USA and being a member of the UAW...blah blah- America is great build it here.
Yeah, Oshawa, Australia. Didn't you hear that they have one there too? It's run by Kangaroos and Koalas and you get a free case of those huge cans of beer with every tank of gas.
I just love it when people claiming to be a legitimate source, let alone a mass distributed source of print, spread nonsense when even the most uninformed person I work with was aware of the Camaro returning and being built in Ontario.
fredmr39 08-31-2006, 02:53 AM ha....sounds like they're sticking with the same facts they had when they "confirmed" the CAMARO
Good Ph.D 08-31-2006, 12:33 PM Mind you though, even the new C6 corvettes have cheap interior. :(
Compared to what?
Lemme guess, a car that cost twice as much and offers half the performance? GM doesen't seem to be having too much trouble getting rid of them.
Z28Marcus 08-31-2006, 12:36 PM Let's all take a deep breath and recall this was a *reader's letter*. Jeez. Calm down. Anyway, GMHTP is way better than other mags out there when it comes to tech articles - their engine buildup articles of late have become quite in-depth and they have Dave Vizard writing for them too (as does PHR).

Yes it is a great mag as long as you flip past any pages that speak of future models or rumors because I can't remember when they got something right.
skorpion317 09-01-2006, 09:48 AM I don't think I've ever seen a car mag in recent years get anything right when it comes to future vehicles. They throw out outrageous claims, with no basis in reality, and then act as if it came straight from the car company itself. Just look at what happened with the Camaro. There were probably about 4 or 5 mags that said "It won't be built," "If it is built, it won't be here until 2010 or 2011," "It'll have an LS2 under the hood of the top model," etc. etc. All they had to do was come onto a site like this and they would have at least been pointed in the right direction. I don't understand why they don't use the Internet for research more often. It's a lot more accurate than the magic 8-ball they're using now.

they are building a convertible...i had a "dream" about it
ws6transam 09-02-2006, 09:59 PM There probably will be a convertible. We just dont know what the timing is going to be like in terms of when it hits in production.
Remember that GMHTP said model year 2010. I'd wager that we'll see a convertible in 2010. I guess that would make GMHTP correct in some respects, eh?
Whether or not you think they are journalistic mavericks, they certainly do have a decent magazine. I like it, anyway. Tech is nice. One thing that has been driving me nuts in a Deja Vu kind of way though, is their re-running choice articles from the previous ten years in this tenth anniversary gag. I'll be halfway through reading about the new 1998 Camaro when I stop, look at the cover and say "yep, it says 2006 on the cover". I look foward to the day when they quit doing that crap.

Sad but oh so true! And that goes for almost ALL of journalism too, not just the so-called auto journalists. Though I like, and do read GMHTP (as well as others, I still read CHP, SC, HR, PHR, etc.).I most certainly don't read it/them, for the latest up to date automotive news. For that I come right here!
1997FormulaBird 12-17-2006, 02:45 PM Hey guys I think im gonna fly down to Aussie and buy the first ragtop Camaro that comes out of the factory!
Anybody wanna come? I got plenty of room on my leer jet!
Rob V 12-17-2006, 03:05 PM Go for it, I'll be sitting in Oshawa waiting to pick up mine ;)
