So my buddy is fixing up his foxbody he just bought its not quite race ready yet but we are already going at it Fords vs Chevy! Anyways he thinks he can walk all over me, the car is a 90 Mustang with the 5.0L High Output V8. It came with Headers/Exhaust/Intake, it also has "posi traction" as he put it and is a 5 speed with a short throw shifter. I think I could walk him pretty easy but he seems confident. What experiences have you guys had going against these older stangs?

With stock gears, I wouldn't say he stands a whole lot of a chance. But, I have seen stranger things in my time. I wouldn't under-estimate alot of foxbody mustangs though, of all mustangs (aside from the '03-'04 cobra's) they are the ones that you need to watch out for. I used to put the hurt on stock automatic ls1's in my '91 GT, and it just had longtubes and 3.55 gears. On the other side of the fence, I have raped supercharged 5.0 mustangs in my cam/exhaust m6 trans am.

But yeah, 5.0L Mustangs?? YES, there are fast 5.0L's around. BUT there are TONS of slow ones!!

I just had a run-in with one about a month ago (just before my A4 finally crapped out) and I actually thought it was going to be a good race. Buddy's car sounded really nice, and it looked nice too (that should have been my first clue ... all show, no "go" )...

...anyway, we did a quick run from a roll and I pulled away like he wasn't even trying. Then we got lined up at a set of lights, and I absolutely embarassed the guy!! (he had a friend in the car ... I had my g/f!! ). That was w/A4 and 4.10's in my car, pretty much stock otherwise .

 

i think it will be closer than you think. this is the same matchup my lil bro has with my friend. lil bros car is an 89 with same mods and stock intake. my friends 99Z WAS a 6 spd stock car (not stock anymore). my brother was a 14 flat and my friend a 13.9. my brother now has a 125 shot on there and hit 13.1. my friends z has exhaust now and a few other things which i cant remember for sure what hey are. he runs a 13.5 now best time. now, he isnt the best driver, but you never know at the track!!! i think the Z should/will win, but it could be closer than people think. my .02 only. not trying to start a war with chevy vs ford i like'm both--

 

Ahh.. the overly optimistic mustang owner . Just messin with ya. In all honesty assuming you can drive your car it will be no contest. I walked these 5.0's all the time in my auto lt1. In stock engine form 5.0's suck. Heads will really wake the motor up. I saw a Hot Rod article where a set of edelbrock heads added ~80hp just think of what further porting and an intake plus supercharger could accomplish.

I have a buddy with a 5.0 too and let me tell you he no longer talks about his car when I'm around. With a few grand a 5.0 can be a fun car but imho pre 94 are oogly and the interior is a la escort. Race him and make him see the light then get heads/cam just to rub it in

 

Clearly your buddy can't drive. My friend hit 13.75 with a bone stock '97 Z28 (LT1), so the guy running 13.9 with an LS1? Unless it was just a bad day.

I've run 13.0 with a relatively stock '02 Z28. Only mods to speak of were the 4.10's and a shift kit? Otherwise, the lid (what, ~5 HP? ) and a Flowmaster (aka, "Chokemaster") catback!

6-speed LS1's are easily capable of low 13's, and in some cases (maybe a couple mods) high 12's. A mildly modded 5.0L stands no chance, given 2 equal drivers .

 

i know my friend cant drive very good, but that has been my experience with them. i know what yo umean when the ls1's can walk on stock mustangs. top end in those cars is sick. i remember when i first rode in it, it never gave up power in the higher gears at all. unlike the stock stangs that are slow upper end. hopefully this kid will elt us know how the race goes
