GM Tech Center -- Camaro Rally -- Thurs, August 10

GM Tech Center - Camaro Rally -- Aug 10th.......

Many of you have talked about gathering your Camaros (and Firebirds) in front of the GM Tech Center to send a message to GM that you want to see the Camaro Concept make it to production.

Classic Chevy International and World Wide Camaro are having a show at the GM Tech Center in Warren, Michigan from Thursday, August 10th to Saturday, the 12th. This is the perfect time to gather and let GM know your feelings.

Plan to be at the GM Tech Center on Thursday morning, the 10th at 10:30. You will enter thru the Van Dyke entrance -- and proceed to the “Amphitheater” -- we’ll have signs leading you there. (see directions below)

YOU MUST HAVE THIS INVITATION TO GAIN ENTRANCE TO THE TECH CENTER---AND.......(here’s a bonus) ---

>>We’ll be giving tours of the GM Heritage Center<<<

-- again, you MUST have this invitation with you........we’ll have a desk set up at the Amphitheater where you will sign up for the Heritage Center tour-- we’ll give you directions -- and this invitation will be your entry into the Heritage Center. Tours will be from 2 to 5 that afternoon.

I realize this is a last-minute plan and I apologize for this. However, I know many of you feel very strongly about showing GM your passion for the Camaro -- and the bonus is that if you do attend, we’ll allow you to view a nice representation of GM’s Heritage Collection -- cars from 1902 to the future -- including many concept cars from the 40s, 50s, --right up to the present.

I hope to see you there!

To sign up to participate in World Wide Camaro Show, simply go to:

www.worldwidecamaro.com -- and click on 1956 Chevy 50th Anniversary Show..........

Directions to the General Motors Technical Center:

Interstate 75 to Interstate 696 East. Exit at Van Dyke Avenue. Turn left onto Van Dyke Avenue. You will be traveling north. Cross over 12 mile road and get into left hand turn lane at traffic light directly across from Campbell/Ewald Building.

Signs will guide you to the Amphitheater. We’ll have ample parking for Camaros and Firebirds.

NOTE: Rally is Free......worldwide camaro show is separate...if you want to enroll for that show, go to the website above.

PLEASE PRINT OUT THIS PORTION OF THE THREAD AND BRING IT WITH YOU....THERE WILL BE A TENT SET UP BY THE CAMARO DISPLAY-- YOU SIMPLY GIVE THEM THIS INVITE (THREAD) AND THEY GIVE YOU DIRECTIONS AND PASS TO GM HERITAGE CENTER. HERITAGE CENTER TOUR IS FROM 2 TO 5PM.

This is the rally that you have all been wanting! A bit short notice, but it is hard to get something like this together with approval and such.

To print the above invitation, click the post number (1) and send to your printer. Make sure you do this and bring it with you or you WILL NOT be able to gain access!

Chris and I are expected to be there, so hopefully you can make it as well.

This is gonna be great!

I would love to, but therein the disadvantage of living on the opposite side of the continent. Heck, I couldn't even get to Vancouver, BC (A 6-8 hour drive) back in March to see the Red concept. I'm such a horrible Camaro owner :(

YES! Cameras are allowed both at the Rally and at the Heritage Center!

First, thanks Scott......this sounds like an great gathering.....wish NC was closer.

Second, I can't make it either.......but I am spreading the word to friends up that way.

Third, what's the urgency in this Camaro gathering? Just taking advantage of another event to get attendance up or is there a message coming to the masses from the General? Inquiring minds NEED to know........

ChrisL
08-05-2006, 11:24 PM
The car show has been scheduled for some time.

The urgency is trying to get exec's schedules confrimed since they are constantly in flux. Hence, the short notice from Scott.

It's not often you find Fortune 5 executives at a car show, so it's a bit of a big deal.

That, and those of us who were in Detroit for the unveiling can also tell you, the GM Heritage Center is worth the trip alone. It has an absolutely ASTOUNDING collection of GM cars.

Do you have to register for the Worldwide Camaro show to participate in the Heritage Center tour only?

The restoration on my Camaro is not quite done. I was hoping to be done for the Bowling Green show in September. I'd like to do the Heritage Center tour but I'm not as interested in the other club activities. At prior Worldwide Camaro Club events I've been disappointed to see relatively few Camaros (compared to 50's Chevys) and very few to no 2nd/3rd/4th generation Camaros. Does anyone know the number of Camaros expected for this show? I can come Thursday with my daily driver (non Camaro/GM) in my bright orange Camaro Concept t-shirt or I might be able to borrow my cousin's Firebird.

No, Scott spelled this out. Reread his post. You will have to go to the Amphitheatre at the Tech Center to gain access to the Heritage Center.

we’ll have a desk set up at the Amphitheater where you will sign up for the Heritage Center tour-- we’ll give you directions -- and this invitation will be your entry into the Heritage Center. Tours will be from 2 to 5 that afternoon.

I had read Scott's post and could see how it could be intrepted that only his invitation is necessary; however, it looks like it could also be intrepeted that both his invitation and the WWC registration are necessary. Scott provided a link to the WWC website for registration and the WWC website shows the Heritage Center tour on their schedule. I was just looking for clarification. What is there to do in the area between 10:30 and the 2:00 tour time. Thanks!

That's the rally at the Tech Center amphitheatre. GM has their own agenda during that time.

:D

If you want to participate in the other WWC events, then yes, you'll have to register with them. If you're just doing the Thursday activities - the rally, and Heritage Center, then you dont need to register with WWC.

The WWC is doing a bus tour Friday to Flint, and a car show Saturday back at the Tech Center. You can register Saturday morning with WWC at the show.

Sounds to me like they want a bunch of F-Bodies on hand at the same time as the announcement that is rumored for Thursday.

Alright, Scott, you can 99.9% count me in for Thursday. Heck, there is even the outside chance that I could have the 67 Firebird driving by then, to compliment the 99 Hugger Orange Camaro that will definitely be coming.

Ok, I sent an email to the GM Press guys and here's what I got back on any available printed materials.

"If we were to make an announcement, I am quite certain that any press materials would be on-line only. In general, we are moving away from printed materials for anything other than major launches -- auto shows, long leads. They are simply to expensive, and most of the media would rather get the information on-line anyway.

Even slides and prints are obsolete -- even the smallest publications now want only digital.

If we do a Camaro, I am sure there are any number of people lined up to do books on the vehicle. If we don't do it, someone will probably write a book anyway,

Sorry I couldn't be of more help."

NO COST FOR THE CAMARO RALLY OR THE HERITAGE CENTER TOUR!

-- when you arrive -- AND THIS IS IMPORTANT-- you will come into GATE #9.....there will be signs directing you to CAMARO parking. There will be a tent there...it will read along the lines of "CAMARO ENTHUSIAST GM HERITAGE CENTER TOUR" -- you give them the first page of this thread (my invitation) and they give you directions to the GM Heritage Center -- that tour is between 2 and 5 -- show up by 2 or 3 'cause it will close at 5.

how far from the border is it?

From Oshawa, you'd want to turn right at London and cross at Sarnia. It's probably less than an hour from there to Warren.

Would someone please take lots of pics of the rally and any other "special" events and post 'em up! Thanks in advance.

I'll hook ya up, don't worry. Everyone that knows me from the local camaro shin-digs know I'm a 100% photo-taking whore. I've yet to be able to max my memory card out on this camera, but I have a feeling when I switch over to high res and then take all the pics that I plan to take Thursday, I'll get darn close to maxing it out!

I'm in for sure with a Hugger Orange Z28. I'm trying to get the 67 Firebird there, but I don't know if its maiden voyage should be a 40 mile trek across town.

Course, it could be pretty symbolic, in that I live only about 2-3 miles from the Milford proving grounds and would be heading to the tech center.

Would be even more symbolic if I was bringing a 1st gen and a last gen(for now anyway)

Scott,

Can you pull any strings and get the 67 Firebird into the proving grounds today(wednesday) for an emergency exhaust, in order for it to make it across town? Being held together pretty sloppily with some flex pipe, for engine break in, etc.

Fat chance I know, but it never hurts to ask.

In that case buy another memory card and max it out as well. We want to see everything!

THAT'S IT!!!!

I'm using other nomenclature when it comes to naming Camaro!!!!

A Camaro by any other name is still a Camaro... But what else does Scott mean when he says that...? ;)

I'm guessing it has to do with the Z28 model . . . .

Wasn't there some extended debate on SS versus Z28 a little while ago?

I don't care what you call it. I'll even buy a Berlinetta . . . as long as it doesn't have an Iron Duke engine in it :D

I don't think "some" is the word to describe it...not too many threads go by that the debate doesn't come up...

Haha I think between my girlfriend and I we'll be set on the pics, I can take 515 at 1600x1200 or 2663 at 640x480... so between her and I both, if we set it at 1600x1200 we'll have some 1000 pics :D But, I might swing over to Best Buy or some place and pick up a 1gb memory card so I can take 4 times as many pics

I didn't take those pics but they look like most of them were taken early before most of the crowd showed up.
There were a lot more cars and people than you can see in his pics.

Man, I wish I could have made it. :(

More pics!

Did they just announce it and then roll out the concept? Who spoke? I know Wagoner was in Traverse City this morning to announce it (according to the press release), so who was at the Tech Center? I assume Scott was there...

Chevrolet General Manager Ed Peper made the announcement at the GM Tech Center.

Scott was there, there were 3 guys who spoke to the crowd (I'm terrible with names) one was the powertrain guy, and two others. lol I was paying more attention to the car itself. They bought the concept out at about 11:30, the three spoke, at noon all the pace cars and the concept drove around the GM complex, came back 10 minutes later. The concept actually had a problem with the fans on that drive. The batteries on my camera died otherwise I'd have some pics of a guy with a Tech 2 trying to figure out why the fans werent working. They pulled off the trim on top of the radiator to take a look at the fuse block on the passenger side, that was it, blew a fuse.

WOW!

You guys/gals got to be a big part of Camaro history today! I cant imagine how I would feel having my cars there today at the announcement that turned out to be more than just a 'mention during a speech.'

Y'all should feel priviledged!

Were the banners up as you arrived this morning?

Banners were flying first thing in the morning. :D It was a very cool day, well worth the drive up.

For all of us less fortunate that cannot get away to this event, what's the possibility of getting copies of any literature or other items that may be available to add to our Camaro collections assuming that the "announcement" we are expecting happens. As a future owner, I would like to acquire anything I can to have with the car as I am sure others will too.
They didn't have a lot of literature, but there were big piles of a folding 5gen poster. I grabbed five extras, with you in mind since I read your post earlier. I have one for you, just PM me and I will mail it to you for the cost of a couple stamps (I'll include a SASE in my envelope to you, just put a buck or so in it and mail back). Other folks interested, I have four other copies. First four additional PM's I get with requests, I will mail them out. Bear with me though, things are hectic here, the Woodward Dream Cruise is coming up ...might be a week or so before I mail things...
