Since the 5th gen Camaro won't be out for at least a year does that mean it won't have Gen IV small blocks? Will the 5th gen Camaro have a 5th gen small block? I thought it was amusing.

I wonder just how often GM will deem it necessary to label engines as a "new" generation. We will be up to Gen XII pretty soon if they keep changing them that fast. Methinks that perhaps the LS2 should not have gotten a new Gen IV label, considering how similiar it is with an LS1.

Block is different. It has provisions for AFM and VVT which weren't fully tested and utilized on C6 LS2. The testing wasn't completed on the VVT and the AFM was decided against because it was a performance engine.

IIRC, LS2 was the first GenIV.
LS1 was the first GenIII, appearing in fall 1996.

I kinda agree that the LS2/LS7/LS4 etc should still be called GenIII.
Although they are different, they're not THAT different.

The blocks are different and the LS7 heads are quite a bit different. The plumbing is all there for VVT and DOD so why would that make it a Gen III when they didn't have any of that extra stuff?

Don't all Gen IIIs have the same oiling and cooling systems and there are 3 different intake manifolds, all with one of 2 different heads, though different valve sizes were available? Why do you think that the LS2 is a Gen III when it has a completely different oiling system and block? Sure the crankshaft is pretty much the same and the heads are similar to the nicest Gen III heads but the AFM provisions and changes to allow VVT make it a Gen IV engine! It shares more with the Gen IV AFM, VVT 5.3 than the LS1. Do you get it now???

How are the heads similiar to the nicest Gen III heads? They are LS6 heads completely in design, minus the sodium filled exhaust valves. I think you are reaching. The LS6 block is different from an LS1 block; should they be a different generation? Ditto for the oiling system. How can you possibly justify saying something like the LS2 has a COMPLETELY different oiling system and block? That is ridiculous. Everything from a Gen IV motor will bolt to a Gen III, even the LS7 heads if the LS7 intake is used and the motor is bored out. I still stand by what I said; GM is getting overzealous in the way they keep changing the motor nomenclature.
